I think that symbol represent the dollar equivalent in the modern AU. Tom did mention that prices in the AU were similar to the 90s inflation level, so that cake and coffee would be more like dollars. Which is still remarkably cheap for a coffee shop in todays world

I calculated the amount of money in the jar, so it's about 8 dollars tall 8 dollars long, so all I have to do is use the square cube law formula to find the rough estimate of money in the jar (8×8×8) and that's (assuming the money is 1 dollar each) so the amount of money is at least 500 dollars in cash.

If I recall The modern AU Equivalent of a dollar uses a stylized G to represent gold or something. So its more like 5 Bucks worth...but as that does look very much like a cents mark, maybe Kat got something mixed up when writing the prices up.

Tom said that he wanted price scales to be comparable to when the US dollar was still under the Bretton-Woods system (before the Nixon Administration took it off the gold standard), so prices are similar to what you would have seen in the 1950s-60s, thus the cheapest cup of plain coffee starts at a few cents. We saw similar with the diner scene, where Adira was selling burgers for a quarter. That said, given such price scaling, that jar full of tips is quite a lot of money, since Kat would be getting less than $2 per hour in base wage.

Hey, as long as inflation didn’t go nuts like it did with the real economy, getting a 2G wage should be fine. By the way, the calculation is an order of magnitude.
