Zen and Raine having dinner on a New Edinmire rooftop overlooking the city at night, suggested by MarvTheHugPharaoh!

I kind of love painting cityscapes. It's probably only because I don't often get the chance, since I run a fantasy webcomic. They're a lot of work to draw, but there's something about a nice city landscape that feels relaxing and melancholy, to me at least. Particular after dusk, with all the windows lit up. There's a certain dichotomy to it: the chaos of a busy city, but quieter at night, especially when seen from far above.I rarely get the chance to be in cities personally (usually only when I go to conventions or on vacation) but I enjoy it, at least in small doses. Every time I look out at a city at night, I tend to find myself picking out a random window or car driving by and wondering what's going on with them. When I paint backgrounds like this, I try to invoke that same feeling. I attempt to add enough details that hopefully someone can look at it and wonder what might be going on back there. That might just be me, though! :DHere are some more city background art: Rainy Modern Raine | Lo-Fi Hip Hop Kat | Snowy Overpass | Rooftop Laura | Cyberpunk Raine - The City

Oooh, they make for a cute couple~!

RemyHindle

They would make a great couple, I bet the view is incredible! :)

J. N. Squire

I like the modern Templar tower architecture

Just a Cat

That view of the skyline is gorgeous, simply to die for.

Spillthefire6

From the looks of it Zen made a joke about his fancy handkerchief for fancy dining and it seem to have hit Raine well.

AlaricLives87

If not this particular sketch, but I have seen plenty of Zen x Raine dating suggestions come and go. This one is a very lovely compliment to one of the smaller, but nonetheless, wholesome ships in the fandom.

Spillthefire6

There are some images that you just know would be astounding if colored and this is one of them

Natani: "Dang it, I had twenty silver coins on his first date being with Kat..."

Avatardragon

On one hand, I REALLY want to see this colored, on the other, I don't wanna put Tom through that

SophieTRat-Skunk

Zen: “Come on… wait until I get to the punchline…!”

Dario Sasin

Rooftop dinner date with the Sugarloaf mountain behind

Joltyjiv15

I don’t see them together more of a fan of raine with red but I also now some people call meals with friends dates so I guess it’s just one of those.

Joshu Kel'Machan

I’d love for my tigress and me to share the table just beside them.

Kurtis Ryan

Great picture, though I still see Zen with Kat.

MarvTheHugPharaoh

Thanks for going ham on this, it looks so awesome! \o/ Best ship 10/10 😍😍😍😍

SCD

Zen: (Dammit, where's our food?)

LifeWulf

Tom makes the best backgrounds. Even without full colour, this still looks good!

Trenton Bushnell

Plot twist: they've ended up in the middle of a Kitchen Nightmares episode, and Chef Ramsey's in the back screaming his head off.

HanLan

Very cute, they are lovely couple

ActuallySine

That feeling really does come across. The way you paint backgrounds is just breathtaking.

Colin Algire

This looks amazing, Tom as always. And I love the background it looks great and I like how Zen and Raine turned out. Awesome work. 👍

Crimson

I love it looks awesome

silver dragonia

it is great to see both of them having fun together and having a nice time in the evening i hope everything goes well for them as both deserve a hug

Justin Collins

Honestly now I want to just see a New Edinmire cityscape drawing. No characters just the city.

nothingsp

This is definitely boss, but "Tknx Tknx" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Mony Mony..."

Tiglish

Seems cozy date to me

Chris Yost

Nice to know I'm not the only guy who does all that

Revan Delmore

Thank you for the extra discussion on cityscapes. I really do enjoy your renditions of them. While I would never want to live in a city, I have a romanticized vision of how awesome city-nights could be. (Side tangent, it reminds me of one of my favorite scenes from Jack Reacher when Tom Cruise is at Rosamund Pike's downtown office in the middle of the night, and he's making comments about the people he can see working through the windows in the adjacent building).

Flora:: What are they doing Trace: What? Flora: I said what are they doing now? Trace: By the mask I'm getting so tired of answering that question! Flora: You have the fuzzing telescope I can't see, dung! don't get upset at me because I'm not just gonna sit up here and play with my tail Trace: Okay look their just sitting there and talking to each other while enjoying a meal. Okay? That's all their doing, that's all people ever do on a date is just sit there and talk that's what they were doing last time you asked me that's what they were doing when you asked me two minutes ago. So two minutes from now when you ask me "What are they doing?" my answers gonna be "Their still just talking and their still just sitting there" Flora: Well what are they talking about? Trace: Ya know what i love you, Flora.

you forgot my favorite, Umbrella for Two. i love your rainy city art!

I highly doubt it's just you, Tom. I may have been in small- to medium-sized towns my whole life, with a good deal of that in a small city, but I've been through the likes of Boston, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Tokyo, Seoul, and currently Nashville. Each time I find myself in the city, day or night, I take a minute to stargaze and wonder just what goes on within some of the high rises. Sometimes, I even find myself inside such buildings like I did with the Sears Tower in Chicago, back when that was the name. However, while neat in its own way, 100 flights up is just too high to see the city for what it is. 20 to 50 flights is the golden zone, in my opinion, and I'd say you nailed it, here. Well done.

BLAZE1001

That cityscape is PHENOMENAL!

Don't jump up and down. DON'T jump up and down... I am jumping up and down right now. Seriously, where do I BEGIN? I've ranted and raved about how much I love Raine in wholesome scenes enjoying herself. But EVERYTHING about this is so beautifully meticulously sketched out, I HOPE this gets coloured. I can SEE how much you love drawing city scapes here! Especially with those great skyscrapers in the foreground and the high up view, that is a view to dine on for sure! I love the arch bridge in the background, and the distant lights fading towards the horizon really selling the immensity of the urban environment! And as for the focal point? Good grief. I love Zen here. Chill, roguish, relaxed. Lounging around after a good meal, and just enjoying the present company, listening to Raine talk excitedly about whatever it is she's speaking of-magic, research, college, whatever it is, maybe even her books and fanfics (okay probably not the fanfics) but she is so animated! And that smile, that damned smile...they're just so chill. I am for sure a Raine/Red shipper due to Red's potential and active changes for the better. That remains so. But I understand and adore the Raine/Zen ship as well. And this is just such a cool scene...Augh. I ramble once more and will continue to do so,...Tom, it's glorious.

This is magnificent. I'm sure I've said this before years ago, but what I love most about the Modern AU is how perfectly it blends with the traditional Twokinds aesthetic. Like, this feels exactly like how I'd imagine the TK-verse would look and feel a few hundred years after the comics take place. If making the main comic wasn't already so much work, I'd happily champion a spin-off that makes the Modern AU official and public, largely to see more of these sumptuous cityscapes. Sadly, I can't afford to submit official sketch suggestions, but some I've wanted to see for ages are more slice-of-life scenes, kind of along the lines of "Summer Festival". My suggestion for that would be a scene in Grand Saria Terminus, New Edinmire's central railway station (which I imagine as either something hyper modern like Berlin Hauptbahnhof, all black steel and arching glass, like a shopping mall with trains running through it, or like plans to rebuild the original New York Pennsylvania Station; Classical Romanesque pillars and intricate latticed ironwork soaring to glass vaults, but with tasteful hints of LED flatscreens in brass cases) with little vignettes of our characters' lives intersecting; Kat, Laura, and Willow frantically sprinting to catch their train, Trace and Flora at a burger kiosk, Clovis rubbing her temples and explaining to Brutus that you don't give people tips to win the Find The Lady game, Mike and Evals at their part-time station porter jobs helping Keith and Natani with their luggage, Scythe and Maren admiring a poster for beachside vacations, the list goes on.

Rae Snowfurr

Seriously nobody got the reference???

Ranbowshep

That is a very interesting suggestion, and I would vote for it. If you ever get the chance to, you probably would have to shorted it a fair bit though!

Argonwolf

I love that most of your cityscapes include a building levitated by a giant mana crystal. It'd be cool if tuned mass dampers did that in real life.

Tyger Potter

Red and Raine. Zen and Kat. Brutus and Clovissa Reni and the Captain

Muddypaws

I see where you’re placing that hind foot mister!

StaggyTheBoyscoutSlayer

I get what you wrote in the description. Sometimes, like when I stop at a traffic light, I look around and see people. I then realize that they too have a life and I wonder what they'll be doing later in the day...
