Daniels signing "I Love You" to Therie, suggested by Galen!

While Therie can hear perfectly well, she needs to use body language and hand signs whenever she doesn't have a pen handy, since she's mute. She's probably signed it to him before, enough that he's picked up what it probably means and is mimicking it back to her for the first time here.

Especially since I surmise that Therie would suffer even more from the "(dumb) animal" prejudice from humans even if she has normal intelligence, due to how she cannot readily communicate with them in an "intelligent" manner if she has no writing tools on her.

Oh, yeah. She's never been shown to speak. However, she has thought things before. Very early after her first appearance, she can be seen thinking, "Hi, Mom." to the tiger matriarch.

Bizarre response. Taking a potshot at what offended this person. Describing someone as “insert any number of disabilities here” and dumb definitely is offensive, as it implies they aren’t able to communicate at all, but that’s not what happened here. Tom only said mute, which means silent, not dumb.

It's never been spelled out in the comic. Every time Therie shows up, there was a good reason she wouldn't have been talking if she could (Hiding in the background after a fling with Daniels, waving to her mother from across a marketplace, etc). The first time it was confirmed was on an earlier sketch.

Well she’s the daughter of that noble tiger so royalty probably and she was probably just born that way being mute is somthing that can happen you can hear but not be able to speak it’s not very common but it can happen

I think what their saying is that the word 'dumb' is taken offensively to many in deaf culture, so the accepted terminology is 'mute'. Also, since both Deaf and Mute persons often use Sign Language, the deference between not speaking vs not Hearing in the Signing community is EARrelevent. ;) pun intended.

She even could be more of a genius/prodigy but due to her disability, she would have such prejudices placed upon her. If her mother wasn't the Matriarch, she probably wouldn't have survived long because she would have been considered "stricken dumb" [if we go by the Christian Bible and the Songs from that religion. Yes, some of which still plays during Christmas 🎄.]

Reads more like theyre saying the term "mute" is offensive. Especially since no one used the older and legit offensive term "dumb" in the first place. (Historically the term "dumb" referred to people unable to speak. But it gained a lot of negative connotation because people linked inability or difficulty with speech to perception of low intelligence, turning it into a slur. Thus the switch to the term "mute" which doesn't have that cultural baggage)

Incidentally I also had similar ideas, including not having her vocal cords repaired even if possible because apart from being part of her identity, she would find it a good way to judge especially the true nature of non-Keidran who interact with her.
