I do feel this as well even if they certainly aren't terrible main protagonists (I've seen much worse in other works), I kind of feel that they essentially ended up suffering from how they're the *originals* from when the whole comic was in its inception because they couldn't benefit from later ideas, and it's very difficult to try and retcon the way your main characters are after a while. But I don't hate them like I've outright hated some other protagonists which spoiled the entire work for me, and I think they're cute together. However this is why I'm most fond of Eric and Kathrin because I feel their relationship is a more realistically complex and mundane execution of the same kind of a relationship where there's a huge power imbalance and the issue of the racial divide, as the two certainly don't always see eye-to-eye in what comes to their personal idea of the other one but still want to make up and care about each other.
