I have a friend who owned a highway legal moped, meaning it could go at least 65mph. She claimed to have gotten it up to 110 on a downslope driving on the 15 freeway heading towards Las Vegas. She's crazy enough that I believe her. 😂

Moped is just a technical term meaning the machine has pedals for alternate propulsion. They are frequently just for show. Legally the engine must be 50cc or under. After that the DMV takes notice.

One problem.......that's not a moped......it's a motorscooter, like a Vespa or Lambretta. A moped is actually a bicycle with an engine that can be pedaled or powered by the small engine.

Which would make it a motorcycle over here, mopeds are hard limited to 45 km/h or 28 MPH - I'd be terrified of riding a scooter like that with two people on it and no helmets. o.o

They can go fast enough to get a speeding ticket on most city streets. I used to have one with a 150cc engine that could hit 50 miles per hour.

Most states in the USA base the limit on engine displacement--a "light motorbike" will be under some limit such as 100 or 150cc (or some wattage equivalent for electric), and can be ridden with a basic driver's license or a special "light motorbike" license instead of a full motorcycle license, but are prohibited from going on the motorways where posted speed limits are above 45 mph.

Oh wow, someone's a daredevil! *giggles* Ok...I'll be that person. That's a Motor Scooter, not a Moped. A moped looks like a little motorcycle and has pedals (and was very popular for a short time in the 1970s). A Motor Scooter has smaller tires, a step-through frame with a place to put your feet in front, and the engine is underneath you. The moped niche has pretty much been taken by e-bikes, some of which are VERY powerful and fast.
