Isn't that how most fan ships work? Build hopes and excitement for a pairing based on a miniscule detail that was included just for fun and never intended as serious or meaningful by the writer? That said, I get the sense Tom collects just as many main story ideas from all the fan interactions and side art as he does from the inside of his own brain, so maybe this isn't as much of a crack-ship as it could be.

Personally, I think where the comic is going with Keiren is hinted far more strongly elsewhere by the actual evidence on page in his recent arc, and I think a single, lukewarm, accidentally broadcast telepathically "the captain is kinda cute" line 10 years ago (which Keiren immediately files in the "that never happened" folder) says enough about where this ship is sailing.   People are always going to have preferences and ideas. But I'm still surprised that a shallow, accidental line from about 400 strips ago has this much traction with so many. One which doesn't even name Keiren specifically, is a bit damned-by-faint-praise, and focuses on his superficial appearance, yet carries so much weight.   As someone else mentioned, people have latched on to it so much you could forget that for most practical purposes they've never interacted in the comic.

Fair enough, Indigo. I certainly haven't re-read the archive recently enough to remember that Kei and Reni have never actually interacted in the comic itself. I think the more likely reason that folks continue to be stuck on this ship, though, is because Tom continues to encourage them by drawing the suggestions that pair them. Put another way, people stay on this ship because it continues to sail.
