Not that it matters as a silly, funny non-canon sketch, but literally the entire canon basis for the ship is Reni accidentally stating 'out loud' Kei was "kinda cute" before fleeing, while Kei immediately went "lol nope" and suppressed that. 10 years and about 300 strips ago, in #898/899. You'd never know that though because a lot either didn't read that part or forgot it, and have mistaken years of sketches for canon and think there's always been signs of deep romantic feelings. I'm not Tom, but it certainly reads as if it was always intended as a one off "Reni is awkward" gag, and to me the complete lack of any development in over 10 years and counting says it all, personally. So yeah it is a little funny when people ask the question when the answer is that Kei, in canon, immediately shot it down, and Reni's compliment was incredibly superficial on appearance with no signs of any deeper feelings. It doesn't stop people having fun of course. But as a genuine answer: because in canon one of the half of the proposed couple immediately made it clear he wasn't interested. Which most people would probably accept kinda halts any aspirations of being a couple!

That may be, but it's fortunate Reni has scales; plate armor (or armor of most types, really) doesn't generally feel comfortable against bare skin. Tends to pinch & poke (& not in a fun way).

For the most part, we don't. Almost everything is non-canon and to a large extent it's glorified fan fic in art form. It's a lot of fun to explore the characters in weird situations, but with very rare exceptions we don't actually learn about the characters, any more than if I drew a (terrible) picture of Flora it doesn't mean anyone learns anything about her personality.

I agree, and I enjoy the freedom of everything being somewhere between semi-cannon and completely nonsensical. Every sketch could either be it's own world or could slot neatly in a shared timeline

I wonder if Keiren has any idea about Reni's recent thoughts on the difficulty of forming satisfactorily-shaped breasts for her human guise ... I suspect she might be too embarrassed to talk to him about those particulars. I can only imagine what her thoughts would be about trying to form a set on an anthro-draconoid form, such as we see in Keiren's mind eye here. I don't think we've even had any answer yet as to whether Reni has canonically established such a form yet.

I believe him. After all, there's this black dragon that he's got to protect Edinmire from by bodily picking her up and carrying her away from the city. What's odd, though, is that she keeps returning so he has to continually carry her away.

Indigo's right. For example in this case, Reni met Kei ONE time, thought he's kinda cute, Kei felt nothing remotely close to romantic interest. But here we are. And this sketch is nothing special - Tom could even draw two random characters kissing (Kat Zen) or even marrying just because that what patrons want to see. And it's not only about relationships/shipping. Characters in sketches have traits and behavior they don't have in the comic. You learn nothing because patrons not only set up situations but write responses/reactions themselves as they like in their suggestions.

Drazgon - For the most part completely agree, though the line can get a bit blurry at times, since Tom has the option as author-artist to put real character elements in. And only he ultimately knows how much is in-character. One example where the reaction was completely invented exactly as you say: https://www.patreon.com/posts/captain-jenny-82718014 Tom explicitly mentions in this case that he doesn't see Reni as an angry jealous type, but drew it as a funny sketch because that's what was requested!

Those blurry lines lead to many people like III to perceive characters wrong, successfully fitting a hundred of fanfic character-defining situations for each real one into a single corrupted image. Kinda sad.

Looking at the pages in question, I'd say that Keiren doesn't even get as far as "lol, nope" with it. I read it as "*non sequitur* → does not compute → more pressing matters → never mind". But yeah, I'm pretty sure that was Tom actively deciding not to pursue that subplot in canon.
