Well, my references are from the web, and I don't speak Russian (except from a mean "Nasdrovie" according to Russian acquaintances). So I am more asking why the discrepancy between what can be googled up and some of the claims here. But yes, I found two links that claims the Russian expression works like the (as you say rare) French expression; thanks for describing it by the way; I used to speak French so its nice to learn more. (And there is also the shared historical connection between nations that has made revolutions - like you I guess it may affect terms.)

After, if my memories about Russian History don't fail, it seems that the whole "calling everyone "Commrad"" is a cliché, than a reality in USSR history. If I remember quite good, when you talked with someone back in those day, it was more like designating someone by his status (Doctor, Scientific, Students, etc...) or just by his name + Patronym (for polite form) or by the Diminutive of the name of the person if you are familiar (ex: Aleksander can be diminutive by "Sasha") because the Russian term for "Lady/Sir" was too conoted to the noblish and high society. And by the way, nowaday, if I'm not wrong, there is also the Patronym (compound with the name of the Father or the Mother plus "Ovich" for the men or "Ovna" for the women, ex: Vladimir Vladimirovitch (his dad had the same name) Poutin) But I let our Russian friends correct me if I'm wrong, I should really retake a look on my History Books about Russia XD !

as my father always says, "russian is a rich language" or you can say 100 words, and they'll mean 15 things, for instance you can say "dama" and "devushka" and they both roughly translate to the word "lady."
