Mary's Downfall (Patreon)

Trace transforming Mary (Raine's mother and ex-Grand Templar) into a white wolf like Euchre as his twisted idea of poetic justice during the overthrow of the Templar. Once changed, Mary was suddenly unable to use magic without crystals and thus unable to fight back any longer. Suggested by SpeedLimit!

Really happy to see this get redrawn. It's a pretty pivotal moment of backstory for the comic and one of the casts least well known members.

I have a feeling that's going to change. The group is heading straight to her, and she doesn't seem the type to let go of grudges easily. I don't think she'll care that new Trace is essentially a different person, she'll want revenge.

It's gonna be a little funny if she's been planning for years to get revenge on Trace by turning him into a Keidran and when they finally meet up again that's actually what he wants.

She's seen Trace since then, and didn't forgive him, but accepted him as a different person on page 195. That said we have no idea where Mary is, we're presuming Lyn'knol but we don't actually know.

I'm surprised Mary didn't brainwash Raine into seeking revenge against Trace no matter what... or did some kind of possession on her daughter who she no longer viewed as a daughter for being tainted with keidran blood to be made into a super mage/soldier to kill Trace...

And again, a beautifully expressive sketch by Tom.👍😍 Damn I wish I could draw faces that well... That the transformation is painful is just natural since one's jaws and legs get completely deformed. Which is why I believe that old Trace must have had a good side to him when he made the collar, since it apparently has an extra spell cast on it to dull the pain of the transformation. Because of that it would be nice if Tom if he could somehow analyze or dissect at least some of the finer details of some of Trace's spells. But that's just an idea of mine :)

This looks extremely unpleasant. Poor Mary! She is far from a saint, but still. We laugh about transformation when Nora does it... at least Nora's work isn't cruel. Don't forget that Mary worked with Neutral to get her human form back.

Euchre doesn't seem to suffer any pain from his Perfect Transformation, and Raine doesn't either. I'd suggest the pain we're seeing here is either from the battle she just fought with Trace (no doubt the cause of the blood from her mouth), or Trace changed the spell to cause a painful transformation. One could argue that Evil!Trace appears to have not only mastered but improved on Euchre's original spell, as Euchre hasn't shown the ability to permanently transform others, or perform partial transformations (like Trace did to Karen).

Am I crazy, or was there a sketch/page somewhere where it was Trace after just transforming Mary where he called for the guards saying something like there's a wolf trying in the grand templars clothes. I thought it was in the flashback scene in chapter 3, but I guess it's not. Am I just remembering something that isn't real or?

Depends, she didn't really take her chance when she saw him last in the mask parts, and saw how he saved flora, so who knows

I don't know specifically on that part, but she obviously wasn't a benevolent person or anything, but she didn't have the Templar run literally everything else, and make it more into a secret police type thing. So while she's not perfect, I wouldn't say she was worse than Trace was, or if she was, she was good at not making it open or known to be common kind of thing

Yeah it was mentioned in the comic that this was a purposely modified version of Euchre's spell to be less advanced in that it caused immense amounts of pain intentionally.

To see how he took the Templar from being a school/semi independent organization that focused on magic, to being a secret police force that basically runs the entire nation, making the king a puppet leader, and having quite large and advanced fighting force.

No you're right, there is a page where it shows Trace turning Mary into a keidran and calling for the guards and lying to them by saying Mary was a keidran trying to steal some of the Grand Templars cloths if I remember correctly.
