It's because of his mental snap after General Alabaster started Palpatine-Hands-ing Flora and the others. He woke up from the Templars trying to sedate him and drag him back to human territory to restore his memories in a murderous rampage, reverting to Evil Trace for a moment and wielding dark magic with abandon. Once that whole ordeal was over, he woke up in a cavern with Nora and the blackness spread across his hand permanently. Yes, I just researched that. Let it never be said that I don't enjoy this comic and world enough to sift through pages of the wiki for the single mention of his hand, and then working my way back 42 pages :P
