The usual is value-by-weight. Look at what the coin (at least appears to be), weigh it, and that's its real value. Of course, Magpie seems to have discovered coin collecting, and value-by-rarity....

Pre-industrial coins are generally made from some mix of gold, silver, or other slow-to-corrode metals. In the days before formalized exchange rates, people would value the coins based on how much gold/silver/whatever they contained. I think that the “bars” are those small rectangular ingots. “Bits” may be pre-scored fractions broken off of a Bar, like how the Spanish 8 Real coin (the classic “pieces of eight”) were broken into eight bits—we still use the term “bits” to mean one-eighth of a dollar, such as saying “two bits” to mean a quarter.
