Headcanon: Clovis did this to himself on purpose so he'd have another excuse to show off for Brutus without it being "his fault". Nothing to be done when you "accidentally" fall for the trap you set there yourself and TOTALLY didn't remember the exact location of and trigger required to spring it. Nope.
