UBE Chief

Welp, he's dead.

XaliaWolfie

Part 2, he's just a ghoul from Fallout and still trying to show it to people

Isaiah James

Yeah, the demon core is cool, bit it's also very dangerous,if any of yall have never heard of the demon core, look it up,it's a good read

Savvyidiot

Anyone watch Stargate SG1 the episode where Daniel FIRST dies? Yeah, Red's about to not have a good time

Vicroc4

Thought they blew that thing up

Brandon awesome

Is that the Demon Core? If it is… rest in peace Red.

AstroChaos

So... yeah... that makes victim number 3 then I think?

Roughlandin

Smile and wait for the flash, Red. :]

TehNecro Lord

They eventually melted the materials and distributed them to other labs to try and prevent the deaths from happening again

CrRAR

It was in that moment the team realized Red was not the nuclear physicist he had claimed when his famous last words were reported by a nearby colleague to be, "Hey, hold my Geiger Counter!"

Keimori

RiP Red, he Lived as he died, full of ionizing radiation

Vicroc4

I was under the impression they built it into a bomb and detonated it in a test.

Michasulfr

Incident number three, if I remember correctly several people died in the second incident

JasonAW3

I'm glad that this is a "magical" artifact, rather than the type made in WW2. At least with THAT he has a CHANCE of survival...

AstroChaos

Nah, second indecent had several people in the room but only one that died. His body shielded the others from the worst of it... a couple guys died about 20 years after from unrelated causes (heart attack, head trauma from an accident, KIA) but only one died from anything remotely related, and he got the lowest dose in the room. The rest lived into their 80's. (I didn't remember others but wasn't sure so I looked it up)

ZapiliDver

Here is Red, Red is dead

Glenn Sellers

Flash? Is he going to have his photo taken?

Trenton Bushnell

How ironic that Red somehow finds a demon core and proceeds to turn himself dead, or a ghoul if he's lucky, and I'm playing Fallout.

Timmainsson

Thinking of a certain implosion device?

silver dragonia

how long would take for the demon core to work before red's demise? i'd say within the week but if he's lucky he got cancer

Inu-Chan

I feel like someone's made a critical(ity) mistake.

Thisguy

Huh. Learned something today.

Trollman906

I can hear the Fallout Rad gauge ticking up sound.

Greg Perry

For those who are not aware, the term Demon Core relates to the development of the atom bomb. The core itself isn't visible in the image, but is a sphere of subcritical plutonium. Subcritical meaning that normally, it does not possess enough material to undergo nuclear fission on its own. The image is actually based of the SECOND fatality caused by the core, and occurred when a researcher, Louis Slotin, was examining the effect of a beryllium reflector on the core. Those are the two hemispheres pictured in the drawing. This type of research was important, as by itself, the core is subcritical, so you need something to reflect the released neutrons back into the core to cause it to go critical. Slotin used an ordinary flat head screwdriver to keep the two hemispheres separated while he recorded the effect on the core (reflectors cover more of the core, the released radiation increases, and the entire core gets a bit closer to criticality). Unfortunately, he slipped, and the two hemispheres closed. This caused the core to become supercritical, and gave off a visible flash of light, as well as heat that Slotin could feel. He immediately knocked the upper hemisphere off the core, but had already received a fatal dose of radiation as a result. He died 9 days later...and it was not a plesant way to go. The first incident involved a researcher (Daghlian) accidentally dropping a tungsten carbide brick on the core, leading to a similar result. The core was eventually melted down to make cores for other devices. ...Red is not going to have a good time.

KaiserDunk

Well, at least he’ll never need a night light ever again!

chakat silvertail

technically speaking it wasnt the slip of the screwdriver that made it go critical but the fact he had his hand over the top hole that cause enough feedback to make it go critical

WDG

Is this how we get the Red Hulk?

Trollman906

just watched a video explaining the history of the Demon core. Interesting but if history. Now I want Red to uncover the Elephant’s foot (A blob of the nuclear waste from Chernobyl disaster still sitting underground)

Inu-Chan

Okay I just noticed the effect where you can see Reds skeleton slightly. Well put together.

OnkelInferno

such a radiant personality Red is

Thisguy

I wonder how powerful the healing magic of this world is… Though healing magic usually doesn’t match well with radiation damage…

Greg Perry

@chakat silvertail, It was the screwdriver slipping that caused the accident, and it really was his fault. The correct protocol for this experiment involved the use of several shivs to keep the hemispheres separated. Manipulating these took more time, so he had a history of holding the upper hemisphere with just a standard flathead screwdriver. When he slipped, there was nothing to keep the hemispheres from closing, and causing the core to go supercritical. It should be noted that even when done properly, this experiment was referred to as "tickling the dragon's tail", and calling it ridiculously dangerous is an understatement of biblical proportions. I actually am a scientist (mol bio not physics), and deal with dangerous materials daily...but holy crap, those guys were both brilliant and utterly insane.

Greg Perry

@Trollman906 As a random but of trivia, the Chernobyl event resulted in the naming of a new material, corium, which is what the elephant's foot is composed of...basically the molten material from the core mixed with random debris.

eddi_TBH

Flash! Ah, ah!

eddi_TBH

I give this artwork a glowing review.

eddi_TBH

Thank you posting this. I have heard the story before, but I didn't associate the picture with this until you reminded me.

Matthew Tierney

... Did Red just find the bloody DEMON CORE!? I could swear they melted that thing down!

Thisguy

@Greg Perry. Thankyou. This is very interesting.

Sir Reginald Lee IV

Ooh! Wasn't expecting a real history reference. How charming!

JasonAW3

Yep. Super criticality is a VERY bad thing. Uncontrolled super criticality is even worse. Uncontrolled super criticality with a side of boom, will just mess up your whole day...

Trollman906

I didn’t realize the Elephant’s Foot was a new material. Sadly it’s gonna be a long time before we can even come close to see what this material can due, since being near it can kill you in a few minutes if stood too close for a short time.

Travis9x

Excellent summary, Greg. For anyone curious, Kyle Hill has a fantastic history video about the Demon Core, on YouTube. His channel is just his name, so easy to look up / find. The rest of his Half-Life series about nuclear power is also fantastic, and strictly factual.

Markius Fox

Melted down, no. It was used in a nuclear weapon test…eventually.

Greg Perry

Well in the real world incident, the researcher received a fatal dose of radiation in about half a second (the estimated time it took him to lift the upper hemisphere of the reflector off the core). He died of acute radiation syndrome 9 days later. The details are...well...awful, so I won't describe it further. Let's hope magic works better than WW II era medicine for Red's sake.

Mīonikoī

It was melted down. In the summer of 1946.

erj232

Hmmm..what could go wrong?

V1nc3nt

Only Red would find fun in a strange magical artifact

Greg Perry

You both are correct. It was melted down and used to make other cores.

Andrew Copsey

*Bzzt* "Ow, my brain! Do it again." *Bzzt* "Hmm, didn't hurt that time."

James Wolf

is... is that... the demon core?...... *sees image title* RED YOU GOOF PUT THAT AWAY IN SEPERATE BOXES AWAY FROM EACHOTHER!
