How To Childhood

This is the first sketch I've seen in awhile that *actually* made me laugh out loud! Well done!

Raventail

You might want to put on your seatbelt, Rose.

CrRAR

"...and now a clip from one of this summer's most anticipated blockbusters..." <i>"Driving with Wolves"</i>

Ordithus

Go go speed Raine \o/

SCWolf

Cop "Ma'am, I will have to ticket you for transforming while diving."

Taki Kuroi

If in doubt, both feet down. XD Love this.

Sons of Lorgar

Eh, I learned driving manual, succeded on first try, and that in a far stricter system than the US. Our driving theory test is 60 questions, 1 of those is an unscoring test evaluation question, and you need at least 56/60 points to qualify for the driving test. The driving test is 15 minutes of vehicle pre-drive show and tell, followed by 45min driving test, and inbetween, you also need to have a practical slippery road evasion lesson.

Sane

It's so cute Rose was lucky, it's very nice to teach such a cute smart girl

Mathieu Northway

My teacher did the final one. And it was fun.

Nerflo

Rose needs to quickly finish putting on her seat belt

VGR

Especially when your foot spontaneously doubles in size and strength. I hate when that happens.

Matthew Tierney

Stick... Evil to throw her in the deep end like that. I almost drove my dad's truck into the garage once because I forgot to start in neutral. Good thing he taught me to put the parking brake on before starting!

CrimsonQuill086

I feel her pain on gearshifting nervousness...just had a lesson today. T'is a nerve-wracking thing, and given her shapeshifting conundrums I daresay she has a long hard road ahead!

Andrew Copsey

I am reminded of the driving episode of Dragon Ball Z. With Goku and Piccolo learning to drive.

silver dragonia

i love rose trying to help raine understand driving while raine is nervouse as all hell if i were there with them i'd softly rub raine's back and tell her there's nothing to worry about just as long she takes deep breathes and focus on rose's voice while concentrating on her breathing

The Sexy Beast

Raine hit the accelerator so hard that it caused Rose to let go of the seatbelt.

Man, if I could help you in person I would. I used to actually teach this stuff, including heel-toe downshifting at race pace. Best bits of advice I can give you are to learn the engagement point of the clutch by feel. Empty parking lot, 1st gear, no throttle. Learn where in the travel is STARTS to engage, and how fast it progresses up from that point. Practice starts after that, focus on trying to get smoother. Once you have that DOWN, focus on shifting. Get a long straight empty road and just practice going from 2nd to 3rd over and over. Upshifts are about timing to be smooth wait for the revs to fall almost to the rpm youll be at in the next gear then ease the clutch out. Downshifts youll need to add throttle to get the rpms up to what they should be for the next gear down. Dont get discouraged, it takes time to be smooth consistantly, and its VERY unlikely youll actually hurt the car/truck by stalling or being less than perfectly smooth. I still have moments after doing this for 20 years, including lots of high performance driving.

I took my drive test in a manual, which is something they never recommend. The kid before me was gone for 15 minutes and passed. I was on my test for a full hour and the lady was in a BAD mood when we got back. I swear she took me through every stop sign in town. See, if you stall *once* in my state, its an instant fail. I got one mark off for getting caught in an intersection turning left and the light went yellow.

coredumperror

Which got referenced in the new movie! Loved that.

Trollman906

I can totally see her father helping her by giving her a piece of jewelry that allows him to mentally speak to her, similar to a pocket radio.

Mathieu Northway

Ouch. Ya sometimes driver tests just feel rigged to fail.

Cliff Warden

I passed mine first try, the hard part was getting my family to let me drive at all. I went through five permits with as many hours of driving in circles around a parking lot at midnight. They were so certain that I would get in a wreck that I drove badly out of nerves until my grandpa gave me the angriest pep talk that just so happened to be the only time any of them showed faith in my ability to drive. I immediately started driving better.

Harvey Danger Noodle

Rose afterwards: “A good first lesson with only 13 casualties.”

Roughlandin

Welp, hope their re-life insurance is paid up, lol. Hilarious, Tom! I love the expressions in the last panel. The flow of the mini-comic works great for the comedic timing. Keep up the great work! Congrats, Kriegerstein!

Muddypaws

OMG! That was so me, when I tried (and miserably failed) on learning to drive manual transmission.

Saberbeam

The sudden ears popping up now almost inevitably makes me think of Komi-San Can't Communicate, which always makes me smile 😁

Elijah Jackson

Try being a guy with both a "Lead-Foot" and anxiety (i.e. I literally get heart palpitations when I'm behind the wheel of car) It Sucks...

eddi_TBH

It's been years since I drove a manual shift vehicle. Now even my trike has a no-clutch shifter.

KaiserDunk

Last time I tried to drive a stick I nearly burnt out the clutch plate riding the pedal. Fortunately, it was just across the fairgrounds I had been hired to help get ready.

I learned to drive back in 1970 in my friend's 1961 Chevy with a stick shift. There were a number of moments similar to this!

Muddypaws

When I tried (see above) I burned through 3!

Trollman906

I tried learning to drive a stick shift. Almost burn out the transmission/motor a few times. Since then, my dad won’t let me near the truck he drives that older than me by 3 years

feralcat52

Keep trying, you'll get it. I taught my daughter to drive my old Ford truck (5-speed stick shift) when she was 11, she's 34 now.

Blackjack

Handbrake check (on), wiggle shifter to make sure its in neutral, clutch in, wiggle shifter, start car, wiggle shifter, clutch out SLOWLY. Lol theres a reason the wiggling the sifter is a meme. Also, yeah, Ive nearly done the same thing. Scary moment for sure!

RivCA

"HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, MISSY! "Big... toe..."

RivCA

It's interesting. I've read through all the comments here, and everyone assumes automatic cars don't shift into gear. If anything, lead-foot issues are EASIER in an automatic, as there's no clutch-shift-release to think about. For the record, I learned shift in arcades and only had one stallout when my father tried to teach me the real thing. I had the concepts, but nuance was more or less easier for me to grasp due to having the baseline.

Adamas

Was always told "You might drive a stick, but you TEST in an automatic"

Mathieu Northway

You should. If you don't they have extra things they look for and will fail you a lot faster.
