Given Natani's upbringing, I wonder how times he was read stories too. My suspicion is not much, if at all. This makes this doubly wholesome and sweet.

This is something I'd hang on my wall. I love it.

Who said basitin can't cast magic? I relate to the popularity of Charles Dickens's public storytelling sessions. A man who had a way with words could fill a theater every night they book simply because they tell such masterful stories that leaves the audience with such a clear picture in their minds that everyone knows beyond a shadow of a doubt as to what is going on. These days, the storytelling masters are doing so through books, as the medium is more permanent, but if I ever get my writing craft good enough to perform oration, I might actually go that route.

reminds me of how i heard Tolkein's words described a few days ago. he doesn't just engage you on one level, he engages you entirely. he would not say that orcs approached minas tirith, he would describe the deep resonating of the drums, the haunting echoes of their chants, the faces of the men as they saw doom approaching, the fear that gripped their hearts. he would talk about the plume of smoke and ash that rose in the distance, and how many would turn away in despair, and yet through even the darkest times, you could see the light of a single star, and know that even when you can't see them, they still shine. and that is what makes tolkein one of, if not the best writer of all time.
