You're confused. Natani has always been biologically female. Until the incident that left her soul shattered, she always identified as female. It was only after Zen saved her by sharing his soul (thus linking them forever, which is responsible for their mental link) that Natani started acting like a boy, masquerading as "the assassin brothers" along with Zen.

Natani has always been biologically female. Pre-mind-meld, Natani was a bit of a tomboy, especially after (holding back the feels here) her parents died (crying hysterically now... Ok, I'm done, where was I?), so she can remain with Zen when he became an assassin to support them. Post mind-meld, Natani gained the almost exclusively male mentality we're familiar with. During her unconsciousness, the younger, more tomboyish version of herself, that didn't mind her feminine qualities as badly, that was severed from Natani by Isaac presumably merged with her again, allowing Natani to regain consciousness, so we're likely to see more tomboyish and feminine actions, thought, and dialogue from Natani.

@LifeWulf Actually, Natani was with Zen in the assassin guild, otherwise the accident that destroyed her soul wouldn't have occurred. I don't think Clovis even knew Natani was Female until Zen came to him for help.

You know I was wondering, how did Zen and Natani's family die? Because when I was rereading the comic when Laura saw Trace on the Bastian Isles the little wolf girl he has a hold on almost looks like Natani from behind to me.

Natani is Batman and Zen is Dick Grayson Robin. Just think about it that way.

Natani seemed to have a personal vendetta against Trace when she and Zen attacked, if I remember, even stating that he had killed family and/or close friends. I personally believe that child was Natani because of this correlation. As such, I believe that Trace killed her parents along with the other villagers, was going to put her to an end (man would the story be different), but instead threw her aside when Laura (terrified by the scene no doubt) caught his eye and he decided to free her.

Zen and Natani were already assassins (and so had already lost their parents) before Trace and Saria were even dating.

Really, I thought that given that Trace didn't become Grand Templar until after Saria's death and the difference in life spans it was a possibility, but mostly it was a question as I knew that Zen and Natani's parents had died and Trace had killed some forest wolves and the place where Saria died is near the forest where Zen and Natani grew up. Lots of conjecture, no hard evidence
