SentientBogOrb

are we resetting the computers perhaps

Molly Rose

The whole episode had me stimming

Reynard Du Maurier

The Germans has definitely left a mark on Colin poor darling

SentientBogOrb

SAM YOURE SO CLOSE BUT ALSO INCREDIBLY FAR

SentientBogOrb

COLIN MY BELOVED PARANOID LITTLE TECH MAN

Willow Edwards

HOLY SHIT THEY COOKED WITH THIS EPISODE SOOOO GOOD

Valerie Kaplan

Ooooh. Okay, if the Protocol dates back THAT far, combined with the alchemy theme, then the Magnus we’re dealing with here has GOT to be Albertus.

Emma Grace

"mummy and daddy stasi" I had to look it up but Stasi is the secret police from East Germany before the Berlin wall fell. Who is "he"? Perhaps another agent of the eye? But one who punishes people for knowing too much?

James Rule

Poor Colin. He figured things out.

Voltz

COLIN MY BOY 😭

frankie

i love the technology horror so so much man. started with sergei ushanka and continuing into tmagp Hell yes

Seal

So whatever the Protocol is it dates back to the 1600s long before the Magnus Institute.

Vex Harper

He's alive!!!! :D I'm sure that means he's fine!!!

Erica

Oooh is the hard reset because Sam is changing how he views the OIAR/Magnus Institute? Also, if I had a nickel for every time an Alex J. Newall series featured an infectious gestalt plant that initially seemed to come from a non-living material, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice

Seal

Something else interesting is Colin's line at the end "No, what I need is to not be seen. He sees too much already. Doing mummy and daddy Stasi proud, I’m sure" I initially took Stasi to be a name, but it is also a nickname for The Ministry of State Security that operated in East Germany. Possibly a reference to Klaus and the German source code in Freddy?

Betty

I can’t wait to see tumblr yassify Isaac Newton. Also love the new take on the “apple falling from the tree > gravity” to “another fruit from an alchemy tree > creating an eldritch horror”

Valerie Kaplan

Albertus Magnus! 13th century German bishop, philosopher, scientist, and (according to posthumous legend) alchemist. Patron saint of, among other things, alchemy.

HeavenlyBibi

Holy shit that would make so much sense

Kate McKiernan

So good, and a great set for the next mid-season break! Excited to hear “balance” dropped again as a key word; feels like that will be a key theme.

Kate McKiernan

I was getting worried the dog would get blue veins!

Hate to be the guy who’s always wailing about how perfectly moody and sinister the soundtrack is under the case narration butttttttt here I am again… Absurdly excited to hear from Colin again if only for a moment. I love that he’s a fish guy. I love that Alice knows where he lives? I’ve really been pondering how close they actually were — it’s funny, Alice acts so flippant but I feel like she’s actually the heart and soul of the OIAR office, she really seems to like… want to form connections with everyone (except Gwen. for now..) and is just constantly thwarted by both the soul sucking transient nature of civil service and also the… supernatural sinister side of the job. people constantly leaving her. in my feelings now! i want her and Colin to make up ;_; and WHAT was Colin going on about, I’m going to SHAKE the answers out of him. As someone who has absolutely no alchemical or latin knowledge, I have also never frantically googled so many things in rapid succession. I HAVE SO MANY MORE QUESTIONS NOW, AGHHHH. Tasty tasty tasty… SamCeliaColin conspiracy board when now???? And it was good to hear Gwen back in fighting spirit after last week :) Can’t wait to see what drastic measures she decides to take next. I have my theories… Banger episode! Just in time for the new merch too… Oh, hell, hiatus after next week might just kill me.

Trajan Miller

Do we think Klaus made the computers like that? Or did he somehow get absorbed in?

Kristsune

Ohh this episode was positively delicious. I love the historical cases so much, and it was delightful to hear one written by alex! And as always i can never profess my adoration for the soundtrack enough. It's absolutely perfect every time.

Honey Coffee

My grumpy IT guy is not dead (yet) 🥰

Scott Hanning

Newton's apple + tree of the knowledge of good and evil from Genesis + eldritch horror = mind blown! I love it when they use real historical figures in these statements, this just made me look up Robert Boyle, who's known as the founder of modern chemistry.

AgentWGD

What the dog doin

Mother of Ferrets

Ooh, good spot there! I did wonder what Jonny's naming theme would be this time around....

The distortion

To be fair the issac newton reference is pretty funny

Aaron Irvin

Protocol = the reverse Philosopher Stone symbol in the OIAR seal, acting against change creation invention growth, enacting stasis stability rigidity

Mice and Moonbeams

There's so much in this one... I almost wonder if there's more to the jump between worlds.. like we know TMA had the crack between and all that went along with making it wider but, this universe is doing its own thing with alchemy between realities. If TMA fears did come here were they pulled not by just escaping but more pulled directly to this reality by something to do with what's happening on this side. Things that make you go hmmm

gasbolina

oh jesus what the hell. im glad colin is still colin at least. and that i have a week to process all of this, my god isaac newton!!???!?

Valerie Kaplan

When they inevitably introduce a character surnamed Dee, we will all nod knowingly.

ChyouX

Welp, guess I won't be getting much done this century now as MAGP renews my hyperfixation for alchemy lmaoo Great episode as always! Loved that Colin is also involved in alchemy somehow...

Rebecca F

Newton excitement distracting from "transference and spiritual substitution of elements" and "not too much mercury... not too much sulfur." The worlds are out of balance with what happened in TMA? Celia might be hopping between worlds (probably not on purpose) and is looking for a way to control it, or at least understand why.

Chanel Moss

I absolutely love this episode and so many of its implications as we slowly see the darkness of the world seeping in. My only complaint/request is wishing there was a way to reduce the sharpness of the S sounds in the audio. Sadly it might just be me because I have sensitive ears but they just come off so loud and spark in comparison to the rest of the audio. Which forces me to have to turn down the volume and strain my ears.

Lisette

*picking up a spool of red string*

Elizabeth Pemberton

TMA: Edmund Halley. TMP: Isaac Newton. TM(?): The Flamsteeds?

Ian Mak

This episode put me in mind of Neal Stevenson's excellent Quicksilver, which delves deep into the world of the Natural Philosophers. Great episode. 😊

Loni

The Stasi was also famous for the insane extend of spying and inventing of spying technologies all throughout its existence. They hired or forced many civilians into spying on their neighbours or even own spouses/parents/children, hid cameras and microphones in literally everything and documented everything obsessively detailed. Stasi even went as far as teaching good looking men how to be good spies and then setting them up in a fake relationship with unsuspecting women, being spied on for years at a time, unaware that the man they were building a life with was faking it and using them. Its quite fucked up, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what they did and with the Stasi comment he implied so much more than just a reference to the maker

MarlaBothBothIsGood

ISAAC NEWTON AVATAAAAR AMAZING statement and GOD COLIN IS IN BAD BAD SHAAAPE

Trisidael

I’m so excited that we’re finally getting into the alchemy stuff, properly! 😁 It came up a fair bit during the ARG, but apart from the occasional mention of “weird symbols” in a couple of statements, it hasn’t really come up in the series before. So I’m really glad it’s finally here!!! 😄

Trisidael

Also, genuinely great to hear your voice, Colin, but you sound like you are going through it! 😬 I 100% understand your paranoia, my guy, but this is not sustainable. You gotta figure out another solution. 😥

Erica

To be fair, his original solution of smashing the computers was overruled so he's had to resort to plan B (smash everyone's phones)

Erica

Honestly, I was wondering if it had something to do with Lena saying there were both benevolent and malevolent forces -- maybe part of the reason why the Office hires Externals is to keep the balance of those two forces?

toeeebean

in the conversation at the end between Lena and Gwen they mention a security force called Starkwall. That's DEFINITELY the same one that we saw at the end of episode 7's case laying fire to the charity shop

ChyouX

ALSO. Just realised we've gotten 2 mentions now of Diana's Tree. I'm so fucking excited man.

Pippa

Alexander J Newall don't you dare Nina me

niborniac

I thought the same thing regarding the sharpness!

Trisidael

Right?! These alchemists need to leave dogs alone! 😭 At least it was reversible this time.

Carleigh Warsing

So glad to see the RQGP getting some recognition!

cypie

Newton's workshop did actually burn down, and he did actually lose most of his alchemical texts when it did - but most importantly, a lot of contemporary sources blamed the fire on his dog.

Rurrie

I was wondering how much of this was based on history! Thanks for saving me the search!

cypie

Of course!! I always love how intricately they layer history and horror
