Hi folks,

Happy Monday from us at Rusty Towers! We hope you’re all managing to keep safe and well in this new year.

One small piece of admin from us, as we’ve noticed that there is a display issue with Patreon that erroneously shows us having met all of our new milestones if you’re not logged in to the site. We’ve raised this with them and hopefully it will be fixed soon.

With the return of The Magnus Archives last week, we’re now locked on course for the finale. Just ten episodes remain, as we get ready to find out what it’s all been building to – what sights will we See? What strands of questioning are left to follow? What answers are we chasing through the twisting darkness? How will it End?

In recognition of this special event, we believe that folks should tune into this one together on Thursday 25th March 2021, to share in whatever Jonny has in store for us… This means that there will be no early access release of MAG200 that week – it seems appropriate that everyone gets to listen to it at the same time, and by announcing this now it clarifies things for anyone who wants to make plans for this finale date.

As for what comes after… well, this is your opportunity to tell us what you want. We’ve got some plans for what bonus content will follow the show – not least of which will be the Q&A episodes (mailbag to open in March) – but is there anything specific about the show’s production that you’d like to hear us talk about? Put your suggestions in the comments below and we’ll pass them on to the production team.

With regards to other plans, you can also expect some more merch to be available, and we’re just finalising things on some very special designs that I’m looking forward to sharing with you soon!

Reminder also that this Saturday at 4pm GMT, we will be marking the one year anniversary of RQ Streams, as Mike and I take on Dream Daddy for more chaotic dating sim shenanigans! Join us for birthday fun, laughs galore, and maybe even a surprise…

In other show news, casting for Inexplicables – our Patreon-exclusive six-part supernatural comedy – is almost complete! Production is about to start in earnest, and showrunner/director Maddy Searle is raring to go on this exciting project.

Here's what you can expect from us this week (all shows release at 4pm UK time, unless otherwise stated):

Tue 19th JanuaryRQG182 – The Garden of Yerlik (Patreon)

a MAG episode called what we lose? we’re in danger ..

Eli Labat-Angstadt

For the Q&A: How did you plan out the pacing for Magnus? Was it always going to be 200 episodes? If so, did you ever feel like any sections were rushed or otherwise? Thank you so much for this wonderful journey and story. -Eli

Matthew West

I’d love to see you continue to post new statements without the need to connect to the main story, even if it’s much less often. Depending on how the series ends, you might position them as statements from year 1 that we just never heard, or maybe they’re “lost” statements.

J.

Q&A: I would love to hear something about the overarching planning process and how it changed over time. Did you ever have to rewrite an entire planned arc, or did things go well enough to plan (or was the plan not that detailed)? Any chance of us ever seeing some of those planning notes?

sAZAndorable

No questions, only very excite for this week

Silvercolour

Question regarding the MAG200 release: will there still be a patreon download, either at the official moment of release or after?

JJ Hunter

I would be SO THRILLED to hear Jonny and Alex and anyone else involved in the season by season planning talk more about what platforms and mediums they used for organizing the metaplot and keeping track of which threads were developing to what points in time for which emotional beats. I know I've ended up red-stringing in my own google spreadsheet and other shared docs. What did the writing & editing team use for their season plotting, and was there some shared document (show bible?) / binder / database that the rest of the production team has access to to guide their work on the individual parts of it?

ThirdFromTheLeft

THOSE PUNS IN PARAGRAPH 3 MADE MY DAY! Also re the q&a i'd love to hear more about the story development process. what was planned from the beginning, what changed, what parts were jonny vs alex etc?

JJ Hunter

More generally, I'd be really interested in a recap of each of the 5 season planning rounds, and what had changed from that initial plan by the end of each season's writing & production. Also what the draft placeholder names were for the various episodes, because we got a glimpse of a parody version previous (from Jonny's twitter, I think?) and that absolutely cracked me up. It would be delighted to get a creepy in-character Web Director's commentary of all the key Web interventions over the course of the series, particularly the subtle ones that aren't blatantly flagged as Hey, There's Web Active Here, Look There's a Giant Spider named Spider and Everything.

Maddie

For the Q&A: As an author myself, I know exactly how much a story changes from the first draft to the final version, what changed about Magnus? For both practical or storytelling reasons were there any characters that had to be cut or rewritten, statements that never got to be read, arcs that didn’t pan out the way you expected etc? Bonus: what titles did you go through before you landed on The Magnus Archives? - Maddie A. (sorry that was a bit long winded)

Julia Cameron

for the Q+A -- I'm curious how much of the "stage directions" on the transcripts are Jonny's writing vs Alex's directing. Is that a shared effort?

UptonPickman

for the Q+A: First of all, thank you for all the amazing work. I've just started teaching in the summer and I am recommending MAG everywhere. Students, Colleagues etc. It really is one of the most original pieces of horror fiction in a while. For the question: I feel like you covered pretty much every fear in the Entities, is there any fear that you later thought of as not really belonging anywhere, worthy of its own category? (besides sexual violence but you stated your opinion about that in one of the earlier Q+As) -UptonPickman

Kath

Some things I'd love to hear more about: - more about the production process for S5 given remote recordings etc. and how those decision processes were made just before S5 was set to start airing, etc. - we've got a some idea of the changes in the production process from S1 to S5 through Q&As and the retrospective and things, but kind of a big summary reminisce of the change in process comparing end-to-end and steps on the way would be neat. - Things people involved are excited about moving forward! Whether or not they are extremely vague, RQ related (that are OK to mention of course) or other things!

JJ Hunter

Oh gosh, I hope so! I'd really like to listen to it ad-free.

Deneb

Q&A Magnus Archives is such a marvel of a show in that it is 200 episodes long and has been only written by one person, amounting to presumably thousands of words. This in combination with Jonny releasing his book makes me wonder – how does Jonny possibly find the time and motivation to write so much? Is it decades worth of work? Does he have any advice for when you just can't soldier on on any project? fun fact that doesn't need to make it into the q&a: Peter Lukas is such a swedish sounding name that I, who live in Sweden, cannot look it up without getting results for actual people called that

Gilligan Mungus

No Magnus questions but a Rusty Quill question. What’s next, Alex? All three of Rusty Quill’s podcasts are ending this year. What will we be hearing from the Rusty Crew next?

Linda Jean

Q&A: I'm hoping to be able to buy a faux leather book of the Magnus Archives after it is finished. Will that be a possibility?

Hila Ofek

I'd like to hear more from the voice actors. What they think about the show and their characters, how was it working on the show through the years, what they think of the fan reactions to their characters etc. We got a bit of that in the assistant round table and retrospective #1 but I personally can't get enough :)

LainyJP

So much can happen in 10 episodes of Magnus, the anticipation is palatable! Like others have asked, I'd love to know what is next for Rusty Quill? The company has recently had a lot of growth, so the assumption is that there is content in planning stages, any idea if Patreon members will get a sneak peek of what that would be? There is so many wonderfully talented people involved with RQ, I'm excited to see what is coming up next after the series endings. Hopefully, there will be a vacation of sorts for the teams first.

FXKTN

For bonus material, I'd love to see Smirke's notes for his taxonomy/ritual explanations/naming. MAG111 is one of my favourite episodes because of the massive infodump, and I've always wanted tto know more along the same lines. As for merch, you could always make a physical copy of "A Guest for Mr Spider", the episode did come 1st place in the Reddit votingg for best episode of the first 100, so seems likee quite a fan favourite. Also, text descriptions for the artwork on your merch would be fantastic! Not sure how best to implement those, but hopefully it won't be too difficult.

Gammija

For the TMA bonus material: This is probably just going to end up as a question in the Q&A, but a while back, Alex talked in the discord's tma early access channel about how "there was an idea we had a while back which would have led us to remake something like 25% of the series just for a a gotcha. Someone remind me to tell the story of it when Magnus is finished." And I've been waiting to know what that was all about ever since

ThirdFromTheLeft

In terms of more general bonus material, some ancillary canon material in the vain of the live show would be nice. like the brief encounter with gertrude that jon apparently had as a researcher or the time sales tried and field to con her etc.

CompostWitch

I'd really like to hear some commentary about Alex's role as a story editor. What does that actually entail? And, you know the thing writers talk about where the characters come alive in your head and start making their own decisions -- how does that work with a team of two people? Thanks so much for everything <3

Nicky

I really think if there’s wanting suggestions for other podcasts to do, I honestly think there should be another story one like Magnus.

Bare1ythere

Not sure about any specific questions on production, but I really enjoyed (both, but especially) the format of the 2nd TMA retrospective. Maybe taking a poll for fan favourite clips to react to rather than (iirc) staff favourite clips to mix up the format a bit between them? Either way, another retrospective similar to that would be very fun!

Laura Bailey

Fri 26 March (Australia) now marked in my household calendar as “Console Laura / TMA Finale” thanks fam

Lutece DuBravac

I would like to know what sound editing technology you use. Also, how you download and send around what must be such large files.

GugTheGoose

It would be interesting to have something like a soundscapers' round table (potentially including soundscapers for RQG and SF too, as the contrast between shows could be interesting!- Or, similar such episodes for each show) Such as, what does the audio sound like when you receive it? What's the weirdest/most fun foley you've had to source/invent? What has been the most challenging soundscape to make/ what has been the most challenging thing to make a sound for? What soundscape are you proudest of/ what would you change? Stuff about the process and technology. Advice to anyone wanting to develop those skills. How did you find RQ? Oh also, are there any sounds that are 'off the table' or used only very sparingly because of e.g. listeners with audio processing issues?

Alex

I'd really like to know which of Jon's lines were voiced by Alex and went completely unnoticed because the knowledge of it has HAUNTED ME EVER SINCE.

cannibalbananas

I'm excited, but sad. It's always sad when something you like ends. But no doubt you'll have other amazing stories to tell us in a new podcast.

Rusty Quill

There will still be a Patreon, ad-free episode, released at the same time as the public one.

Chris

Question for merch: are there any chances that there will be patches available? I would love a TMA patch to sew on my jean jacket! Thanks :)

Sleonesia Lidell

Q/a: secondly, what are other projects will yall be planning after Magnus is done. Thirdly, are yall plannin on makin enamel pins as part of your merchandise?

Julia Cameron

another Q+A: how does it feel to have completed this huge project?? congratulations!

Echo

For the Q&A; did you write things with the intention of "I want to make the fanbase cry" or was it just a happy, yet spiteful, coincidence? Also, would it be possible at some point to get the Fear designs on prints? Cos I would buy them all if they were available in prints

2026-09-05 23:00 For the Q&A: The run time for each episode is quite similar so what process did Jonny use to work out episode pages/wordcount or did a lot get edited out?

2026-09-05 23:00 For Q&A: Did Jonny learn anything about himself when writing the Magnus Archives? Also was there anything challenging when writing the scripts that he didn’t expect or was it straight forward? How did the other characters find their voice?
