Hi everyone,Unfortunately, this will be a short update today rather than our normal newsletter, and I apologise for the delay to normal scheduling.

As you may be aware, we have had to pause our Discord server. Our moderators have resigned, and so we were no longer able to safely maintain the space. We understand their reasons for doing so and wish all of them well. We also apologise for any hurt that we caused them during their time with us, whether through miscommunication or under-appreciation. We are grateful for everything they have done for us since the Discord was created.

We are also investigating some serious allegations that were brought to our attention regarding an ex-employee. Because this is an ongoing process, we cannot legally give more details at this time as doing so would mean that we would be breaching their privacy.

Lastly, we are aware of the many concerns that some of you have brought up via social media, and we are taking them extremely seriously.

We intend to provide a longer update to everyone Wednesday at 4PM BST via our website and linked to on social media. This will include:

more clarity on recent events;

updates on what we are doing to address concerns;

our plans for the Rusty Quill Discord server specifically

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this current situation.Hannah Brankin

Rusty Quill

Hello, yes content releases will still happen. We will post an update as soon as possible about this weeks content drops.

TakYelgif

Glad to see RQ is handling the social media issue as best as y’all can. And I am sorry to see that things went sour for some, I left a Magnus social media group when the group as a whole became unsafe (internet trolls etc) It’s also why I never really engaged with the discord. Glad to see this won’t affect the general schedule and appreciate RQ!

Arrianna Jaben-Stein

While the Discord server is (was?) an important aspect of the community experience (and there seems to be a lot here), I really appreciate the information that there will still be content releases. That's what I read the weekly mail for. I'll stay tuned for that information.

Heather Cartwright

I'm glad to see that you'll be addressing concerns, but I really feel like this update needs to go out to those who aren't Patreon subscribers too. They're still part of the community, and deserve to know they'll be getting more news on Wednesday too.

Angela Reeder

I somehow missed that there was a discord server. Now I'm a little sad I missed out but also glad to see RQ stepping in to create a safe space. Managing and moderating a large group is not easy especially when trying to keep the space safe and accessible to everyone. I appreciate the update and look forward to seeing what the plan is moving forward.

Pentoll

I would have hoped you had the decency to word this better than the Discord message you wrote before shutting it down. What you are doing right now is creating confusion and making it look like you were not the ones who are at fault here. I am even more disappointed than I was days ago. It wasn't the community who did this. It wasn't the mods who did this. You did this. You treated your own moderators bad. At least admit that, instead of hiding a poorly worded apology behind a paywall.

Jennifer

Thanks for the update. Rooting for everyone during stressful times...

Al LaBarrie

Thanks for the update. Hope everything works out for all involved.

Pezzy

stop making people scapegoats and own up to your own inability to support the people who have held your community together over the love of the podcasts you make. Maybe if you spent a little more time looking at promoting and interacting with the community you wouldn't be in this positioning, ignoring the fan base that have tried and failed to communicate with you in the past over accessibility and problematic issues. It should not take all of the unpaid mods walking away and all THIS to make you look at the way things are done. There's been a blatant lack of any merch or promotions for your other two podcasts and quite frankly the way s f was treated was appalling. It was an after thought on all social media . Maybe spend a little more time promoting your own podcasts before buying up promotion for other podcasts. I've lost all respect for this company quickly the last 6 months. And that's a shame because I had hopped you would learn from mistakes obviously not

Kale Salad

I am incredibly frustrated at this "Update". Once again you are deflecting everything and allowing people to make the worst assumptions while trying to paint yourself in the best light possible. This reads as just a very safe "we're working on things thank you for waiting please wait more" A lot of the community has been hugely dependent on all of you during the past year and a half and this is just crossing the line for so many people. We want to believe that things can be better but this keeps being disappointing.

Julia K

oh i see it's Go Girl Give Us Nothing 2: Electric Boogaloo over here -.-

Pezzy

Well said

Pezzy

Hopefully a safe space for there moderators too

E C Marlowe

This is pretty cryptic to me as someone who didn't use the discord. I hope it will all be resolved fairly and appropriately. And I hope you will be able to maintain a clear line between RQ's genuine obligations to fans (e.g. safety in RQ-controlled spaces) and expressions of entitlement from folks who think a small monthly payment entitles them to dictate every decision RQ makes.

Macbeth

I agree. RQO can tweet about it?

Grif Stian

My impression has been such that the moderators were not employed by RQ. It seems misleading to say the moderators “resigned” from a job they were not employed, contracted, or paid by the company to do, even under situations that became increasingly hostile. Perhaps I need to re-examine the definition of the word “resigned.” I’m not wholly informed on the situation, but it seems to me that if a company can be put on pause by people no longer doing a job they were not employed to do, the company needs to re-evaluate its behaviour. I’ve admired RQ in the past and I hope you treat the people affected by this situation in such a way that I might respect you again.

TheShy Typospherian

I think RQ is handling the situation as best a young company can. Fantastic job friends!

Brinn Anza Art

you can't resign from something that isn't a job but thanks for the continued hostility I guess my expectations were already in the basement

Anthony&

Update much appreciated, and I look forward to hearing what positive changes will be made going forward. xx

Question: would it be considered sharing patron-exclusive content and thus unacceptable to screenshot your apology and share it to those of your now ex-mods who aren’t patrons?

Nepenthe Wang

Hannah, I hope you realise that not all the ex-mods have Patreon subscriptions because you didn't give them any, and so now this apology is another thing that other people had to tell the mods about because you didn't.

For those confused on why people are upset with this message, I’ve reworded the areas that stand out: “We also apologise for the hurt we caused them during their time with us, whether through a lack of communication or clear support. We are grateful for everything they have done for us as volunteers since the Discord was created.” “We are also continuing investigating some serious allegations that were brought to our attention. Because this is an ongoing process, we cannot legally give more details at this time.” Thank you for the update Hannah and I honestly look forward to seeing what RQ has to say on Wednesday.

Katy

[IMOGEN voice] Yikes!

Bresby

Once upon a time, I started supporting a company on patreon not just because I liked their work, but because I believed they were a good company. That they cared about their employees, their volunteers, and their fans and wanted to do some good. Naturally, this turned out to be a fairy tale. The attempts to deflect blame away from yourself and the vagueness that is clearly an attempt to cause your patrons to speculate in such a way as to make them blame another individual for these events is disgusting. And for all of your carefully concocted PR, it is also painfully transparent. I have argued in your defense through various controversies because I truly believed you were trying your best and working to improve. Now, I regret every penny I've ever given to you and every word I've spoken praising you. Will I continue to support you after this month? Honestly, at this point, it would take a miracle.

Angela Reeder

I can't read tone well in text, but I'll assume you didn't mean this to sound upset. :-) I wasn't part of the Discord so I don't really know what went down. As I said above I know moderating a large group is really hard (I've done it) especially if you are doing it as a volunteer because you believe in the group/company. RQ should absolutely provide a safe space and support for their moderators. I apologize if it sounded otherwise. I do look forward to seeing their plan and because I enjoy RQ I hope they genuinely do better moving forward so I can continue to enjoy RQ content.

red

not to mention the several THOUSAND discord members who aren’t patrons…

E C Marlowe

Addendum: I don't want to delete, but since posting the above, I've learned a good deal more about what happened. And I'm a lot less optimistic that RQ will proceed with fairness. I really want to believe that you're a good company that cares about employees and fans, but I'm finding that increasingly difficult. However, I do stand behind what I said about the need to draw a line between real issues and fannish entitlement. Some people are piggybacking off this mess to air their fannish grievances about everything from ships to merch, and it's gross. It draws the focus away from where it needs to be. My respects to the ex-mods for all their hard and un-compensated work.

Broth Mirepoix

where did you read about what happened? I haven't been on the server in ages and I'm out of the loop....

E C Marlowe

Broth Mirepoix, I asked a friend who's a long-term RQ fan and used the Discord more than me (NOT a mod, to be clear). But I'm not sure how much of what I was told is information that people want to be public knowledge. Sorry. There's info on Twitter, though there's a lot of BS as well. Hopefully on Wednesday RQ will choose to be as transparent as possible.

Mel Andrews

I'll reserve judgment until this big update, but it's not looking good so far.

ArreisStörmQuest

Sorry to hear all this is happening Hannah, and to a company and people I have truly come to love and appreciate. I can't speak on the topic that much because if I'm being honest I don't use the RQ Discord server that often; however I can say that every time I have been on there it's been nothing but love and positivity and mutual support so it breaks my heart to hear all of this negativity and accusations. But I'm not going to speaking for RQ and the team, instead I'll just wait for further details like you said. Still sending all my love and support to everyone over at Rusty Towers, hope you guys are doing ok despite the chaos.

Valence

I don't use the discord, but handling and keeping up continuous moderating for one so large must be really difficult! I think it's really admirable that the discord was started but I won't be sad if it's gone for good.

Latitia

Nah, you can apparently just shove it off to a handful of volunteers, no payment or support required, no sweat for the company

Emojibones

I always wondered why the discord was so big in the patron tiers. There must be more people like me who never bothered with the discord. It will be interesting to see how they switch it up.

Alannah Small

I'm not in the discord and have no idea what the specific issues are, but you can absolutely resign from a volunteer position. I have done it myself, more than once. For-profit companies using volunteer labour is a whole other can of worms, and is pretty morally questionable. But just because you are not getting paid for a position doesn't mean you cant resign from it.

Brinn Anza Art

let me rephrase I didn't resign cause I never signed anything I quit resign implies a formalized position and uh that sure as hell wasn't what the discord mods were

Len

This should have read “we apologize for exploiting the labor of our unpaid mods for over a year while knowing very well that the size of the discord server was growing far beyond the scope that a volunteer mod team could reasonably handle.”
