Hello all,

As mentioned on Monday, please see our full statement on the events of the past week here on the website: Statement on the closure of the Discord and recent allegations Due to the length this is separated into sections within the above post.

If you have any questions or concerns about what we have said, please feel free to comment here or email us at mail@rustyquill.com

Many thanks for your patience and support

In the final section regarding inclusion Helen was consistently referred to as HE. Either this was supposed to be in reference to Anil in the latter part of the statement or it needs to be corrected. Otherwise thank you for the update and clarification, a lot of this is part of the learning curve as a growing business. The fact that RQ is making efforts to be transparent and make the needed changes deserves respect in my opinion. Thank you!

Sue

Helen uses she/he/they pronouns!

Apologies if the link is slow to load or timeout. We are experiencing very high web traffic. If the page fails to load, please wait a couple of minutes then try again.

Glad to hear y’all will be waiting on Enthusigasm until there are transcripts and to hear about Helen’s work behind the scenes in the company. Thank you as well for promising weekly updates as the total lack of communication on progress has led many of us to wonder if there was any work being done at all on these fronts. That being said, there are ways to communicate that things are happening even without revealing sensitive information. Please, please learn from this for the future- many of us have been asking for better communication on various matters for over a year now. Additionally, I know y’all are a company, but for a company that grew off the support of a community, this statement definitely reads a bit like “we were working on things and if you’d just been patient and nice, we wouldn’t have had to take away the Discord”, which, I’m sure that’s not your intent, but that misses the point entirely. I genuinely believe y’all are trying and individually, no one has acted maliciously, but there comes a time where silence *is* harmful. People didn’t just feel hurt, they ARE hurt, and if you would’ve taken the time to make them feel heard by responding prior to massive upset, it would’ve saved us all a lot of grief. Anyways, thanks for the update.

TakYelgif

Thanks Sue I couldn’t remember and it wasn’t entirely clear who was being referenced in that part of the statement.

River

Thank you for providing such a detailed statement on what’s been happening. I hope everyone at Rusty Quill is taking care of themselves after such a hectic week. Wishing all the best to the ex-mods and hope they’re doing well. Thanks again.

2026-09-05 23:00 Would it be possible to also attach a singular PDF of the statement to this patreon post? The website can’t handle this amount of traffic

Thank you for addressing the situation in a detailed and accountable way.

I don’t know if that was the intent. I have worked in private sector business for a long time. Statements or promises of compensation without following through either because you can’t (budgets) or don’t want to compensate. Can cause serious legal issues for a business. Not really sure regarding the reason for RQ not saying anything. Fixing things with the people that have been hurt is something RQ should however do, if they can.

Rusty Quill

The plain-text version is now attached, apologies for the delay!

Forgive me if I’m reading your message wrong- I meant there are still ways to tell people things are happening such as “hey, we’re hearing your complaints about transcripts and working on it” or for the mods in particular that “some things are changing behind the scenes, we’ll give you definitive information when we can”. Nothing promised except further communication (which is the major complaint of the former mods anyways from what I can tell, the lack of communication and follow through).

Hollis Morelle

Thank you for the update and being as transparent as you are.

TakYelgif

Agreed and that is where RQ as a young business has hopefully learned their lesson. I’m not saying don’t communicate but you do have to be careful as to how you communicate otherwise it can become legally binding.

faye

Yes, sorry, I took that as being obvious. Is there a way I could reword my statement to make that clear?

juryinhotpants

I appreciate how empathetic and transparent this is, well above and beyond what a creator owes fans. Official discords of large fandoms are universally nightmarish to manage and I think many of us absolutely understand its removal. Many of us would also know how resource-heavy transcription is, and how long contract negotiation takes, and I certainly appreciated your updates over 2020 and 2021. Cheers for all the effort you put in to these statements and everything else, it is heartening to see such a genuine response that does not shy from accountability xx

TakYelgif

I feel like this conversation as a whole has cleared things up.

Thank you for this comprehensive, clear update. I've sent a quick email re: the website hyperlinking FYI that was previously documented in this comment

JJ Hunter

That was honestly a lovely little example in writing of how to rotate through the full range of preferred pronouns for people who identity by more than one set: Helen->they->she->he->he->they

I do appreciate the update, and I do think my last post may have been overly angry. And - I do believe that there are many people at RQ who want to do better and truly care about everything in this newsletter. I'm also glad that RQ seems to have figured out that people appreciate updates, even if that update isn't substantial. That said - I am still very angry on behalf of the mods.

Jay

Thank you for the transparency. Looks like it was faults are both ends. Lets hope things get better going forward.

I’ve already given my well-wishes on Twitter but I also wanted to say that I really appreciate what your new network stands for and the changes it will hopefully bring to the creative industry in coming years. I can only imagine that networking with so many third parties makes transparency increasingly difficult, for legal reasons, but I really admire the effort that was put into this collection of statements. I can see that efforts were made to put things in layman’s terms. Things have obviously gone a bit sideways and I do hope that there are still plans to compensate the former mods if possible but I have faith that positive change is on the horizon, especially with Helen and Anil on the case. I still believe in what this company stands for, beyond my fan loyalty to your content. Take care, all. xx

Faye you’re spot on. RQ has always had a major issue with not communicating well. We all get it that details can’t be given in some situations but it’s still possible to say they’re working on it, they’ve heard what’s being said, etc. That minimal effort goes a long way.

Mel Andrews

You should probably remove mention of the Discord in your Patreon tiers.

ArreisStörmQuest

I know that Rusty Quill has always made inclusivity and equality a main priority of there's, because as Alex once mentioned, human decency should never be sought out as some attainable goal but instead it should be seen as the basic principle and something people should practice regularly without expecting rewards or praise. I'm very grateful to know you all are working to rectify the situation and that RQ remains focused on transparency. I have no doubt that these mistakes were made with no malicious intent to them and it's as you said, everyone at the company is human and this is a learning curve that takes time to understand fully, but I can see you are definitely on the right track and I'm happy to hear Helen and Anil are heading that department; they are both incredible people with a vast knowledge and heart for helping others. I wish everyone at Rusty Towers the best and I'm sending love and support to both the company and all the ex-mods. Thank you for the update.

Latitia

As someone for whom the discord was a big part of why I am a patron, I'd also like to see what plans you have to compensate for it, be it new rewards via patreon or a lowering of the costs of each tier

Rusty Quill

Hey Patrons, just a quick note to say that after feedback from a few fans who have reached out to us, we have decided to allow extra time for Discord users to save conversations. The Discord server will continue to be accessible over the weekend in a read-only format until it is archived at 9am BST, Monday 20th September.

Dr Lou

Thank you - this is very comprehensive and hopeful.

Mel Andrews

I don't know that it needs compensation, personally (there are still rewards there). But it'd be good not to misinform anyone over the next half a year or so.

CosmicBrine

Thank you for this super comprehensive update! Sending positive vibes <3

Pip Walker

Thank you for the updates, the company has grown far faster than I think you probably expected and were probably prepared for. Thank you for looking to address the issues that have arisen. It’s been a tough few years for everyone, hope you are taking care of yourselves and each other
