In this one we'll put the advection technique we've been exploring previously to use and create two setups - one forming another abstract head sculpture and the setup we used in the promotion for this course. Have fun :)

P.S.: For the final rendering you'll need to download the "Hamarikyu Bridge B" HDR from HDRLabs: http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html

Luigi Dalla Riva

Hi Moritz, really useful tutorial, well explained especially for a beginner like me. I've got a couple of newbie question that regard this video. 1st: Is it possible to offset in time the growth of the bubbles, for example from left to right of a grid. 2nd: Is it possible to modulate the amount of advection given in each frame to slow down or speed up the growth. I know that probably these are questions with an easy answer but I just need an hint to begin researching on my own.

Hi Luigi, both of these can be tackled by introducing a scalar control volume, which we'll use to store a value that drives the strength of our advection (let's call it "amp"). Thus we can slow down the advection by using smaller values for amp and we can control in which regions the advection will be stronger by storing different values for amp across the control volume. I've colored the respective nodes pink in this hip file: <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/dignr7cmew64upi/VDB_advection_006.hipnc?dl=1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.dropbox.com/s/dignr7cmew64upi/VDB_advection_006.hipnc?dl=1</a> Cheers, Mo :)

thanks for your awesome courses ! would it be possible to add a categorie "Volume101" like "VEX101" and "AHTYA" ? it would be easier to reach previous courses. thanks !

Awesome Tutorial Moritz! Thanks a lot. Question, how would you invert the head vdb so that the growth of the cells was limited by the inner boundary of the head instead of the outer boundary. In other words what if the growing cells existed inside rather than outside the vdb? thanks!

Bruno Canales

My instinct is to multiply the values of each voxel times -1 through a volume VOP or volume wrangle... but for some reason it is not working...

Az Ainamart

Hi! I'm trying to play with that technic and what I want to do is get variable speed of growth for individual "cell" and make them not only grow but also shrink. I was thinking about setting "speed" attribute to original points and somehow transfer it to VDB but cannot wrap my head around it. Please, help!

Olaf Finkbeiner

I think i know the answer to your question in the video. "Why is it smoother when lowering the resolution of the advecting VDB?" Your VDB smooth will now affect 8 times more actual volume space. And the lower resolution will not allow it to be as precise when smoothing.

Florian

Hi Moritz, one question, regarding rendering volume as Isosurface. Is that technic available in Redshift too? thanks a lot.

Hi Florian, as far as I know this feature is currently only available in Mantra (but I hope I'm wrong here). When it comes to more intricate features, Mantra is a beast of an engine. I highly recommend checking it out for very challenging shots :)

@Olaf - That sound absolutely plausible... Let's check by increasing the smoothing and checking if that's gonna yield similar results. Thanks for the input!

Hi, love these tutorials! How might you attack allowing the VDB "bubbles" or "cells" to combine into one cell after a certain threshold, maybe similar to how a soap bubble might combine with another? Curious if you have a suggestion! :)
