Here's a small addendum to my God of War 4 video in which we discuss why "Character Action" games are just games with good combat.

It seems like you're conflating "complexity" with quality here, which I think is just a flawed way of looking at mechanics. There are a lot of ways combat can be fun aside from "how much memory does it take to make use of them properly and how many tricks are there to learn." Aside from that, character action is actually pretty easy to define, it's a game that focuses on combat almost to the exclusion of other elements, usually with an emphasis on putting players in crowds of enemies and heavily limiting crowd control options to force the player to focus mainly on prioritizing targets, at least until a high enough skill level is reached that the focus shifts instead to stretching those limited options far enough to maintain crowd control despite the systems not being built for it. (though specifically focusing on this sort of "can you manage a crowd with a needle?" type of challenge isn't necessary for inclusion, most just do.) Also the idea that the qualification for "character action" is "you must be this good to enter" is pretty ridiculous since there are really easy examples of bad or mediocre character action games, like Platinum's The Legend of Korra or, to use an example that you actually mentioned briefly in the video itself, DmC: Devil May Cry. To be clear, I'm not trying to defend the idea that other styles of action game don't have anything to learn from character action games, in particular I think that pulling out the camera like most games in the subgenre do would REALLY help God of War 4, it's just this idea that character action games are "just action games but better" which really comes across as refusing to look at things in a broader context.

Great video, Brit. Man ! Don't worry so much about the youtube comments or twitter discussions ;) I think is fine to generate those discussions that makes people think about how to defend the thinks that they like (Even if they are wrong) and not just swallow the positive reviews that put the last GOW like the best game ever. The time will put the things in his place... for me, videogames speaks another language, and for my point of view, games like DMC4, NG2 or Bayonetta are telling us more interesting things in that language (A "mechanical language" if I have to put a name) that the last GOW. I mean, is obvious where the time is puttin games like Vanquish or God Hand (Games that were totally forgotten the day after they released, for example)
