Hey gamers. This took a little longer than expected but I think this turned out to be pretty in-depth yet concise assessment of the recent Resident Evil 4 Remake.

This was meant to be 1 of 3 videos I wanted out this month, that won't be happening now but I think this video was worth the work in the end.

I've also been working on a shorter Patreon review to be done before month's end, so stay tuned for that.

What did you all think RE4 Remake?

Massive thanks for mentioning the villagers' new accent. It's one of the things about the original that annoyed me more than it should considering how inconsequential it is lol

Leon and Ada's first encounter is when I checked out of the remake. The story of the original was such a bummer for me (for reasons mentioned in the RTTRL vid and this one) that I don't even bother with it when I replay the game these days. So, a retooling of the story is what I was looking forward to seeing the most with the remake. And turns out it is the most faithful of the recent remakes? To the extent that it won't add scenes that are begging to be explored such as Leon discovering Ada was alive the whole time? I don't know, seems like it would be a key scene that would have fit in for this attempt at Leon having this survival guilt character arc. The very premise of OG4 is just so silly that retelling it with a more serious filter makes it even more absurd to me (though I agree about the new content with Louis). And yeah, seriously, nothing And I find the gameplay sound, but it feels like it trades tension for bombast. It has modern additions, but modern additions isn't what made the original great to me, if that makes sense. It all just left me bored by the end. Overall, I feel like this remake fails to justify its existence like the other remakes. That's probably why Remake 3 is my favorite of the recent bunch; it has its draw backs, but it was doing such a wildly different take on the original and had such fun characters and writing that it kept me interested the whole time. It's weird though... Looking at the RE games over the past few years, I haven't loved any of them. I'm starting to wonder if I can say that RE is one of my favorite series when the games I loved and still replay are now 20 + years old. I think the last lines of the video puts into words what I'm feeling quite well. And instead of replaying modern games, I'm writing far too long comments about what I don't like about them. LoL

7 and 8 have the most quirks and blemishes but in spite of all of that they are the most compelled I've been by Resi in the last 6 years. Better to swing and surprise then make remakes and have to play this guessing game of managing the expectations of fans of the classics.
