Here's the long requested Metroid Dread review. In a way I'm kind of glad I sat on my thoughts for this one and let them come together naturally instead of forcing a review out on release. Still it sure is a blast from the past reviewing Metroid. Hopefully it won't be the last time.

Hopefully I'll have another recommendation video out soon as well as a content update. Also, I'm still thinking on which mods would be cool to demo on the channel like I did with Resi Survivor.

Catch you back here soon.

Taking a risk here by saying this because I know you're a challenge junkie Charlie, but one thing that really bothered me to this day as a Metroid player is the bosses. With the rare exception (ironically the first and last ones, Corpius and Raven Beak), the bosses in the game are cranked way beyond a fair level of difficulty. Yeah, I don't notice now because I've played this game a dozen times, but to a first-time player or anyone who isn't as forgiving as a hardcore Metroid player, this is pretty frustrating. The main problem is just the enormous amount of damage each boss does. That's the feature they all share and you can watch that overcranked damage interact with the boss's other features. Drogyga hits like a freaking truck, but it's also relatively slow, so the fight is tense but manageable and just requires careful play. Escue /also/ hits like a truck, and moves around like a coked up maniac, and so the fight is so disgustingly difficult. Z-57 has highly telegraphed moves, so it /would/ be just challenging enough to be fair, but its healthbar is so overly long that you have to stay tense about not taking damage for much bigger stretches than you should. Et cetera, et cetera. By far the worst ones are those Chozo robots where you're tasked with keeping track of two hyperactive enemies chasing you all over an arena with multiple levels at a pace that makes stopping to use free aim near-impossible. I can say that the bosses are poorly balanced this way because, comparatively, the rest of the game is /excellently/ balanced. Yeah, the early game is hell, but as you collect more powers, you get stronger and can feel the game getting easier. But thanks to the mid-game releasing of the X, the game never gets /too/ easy and forces you to keep learning the enemies and environment and keeps you on your toes. (This complaint does NOT extend to the EMMIs, which I found suitably challenging and terrifying, and probably the best part of the game.) Been holding that complaint in for a while if we're honest.

Very fond of the "Other M PTSD" comment because that's pretty accurate. I still hear those monologues in my nightmares.

The bosses weren't too much of a problem for me and I didn't really feel like they were an insurmountable challenge but I have played a lot of Metroid and a lot of action games so maybe I was just over-levelled for this one. They probably got the boss balance just right for people like me at least.
