Capcom gives you the DLC for their game, here's the DLC for my review of RE4 Remake with a look at Separate Ways. A quick run down of the pros and cons of the new (old) new expansion pack for the new (old) new Resident Evil game.

What did you think of the current state of Resident Evil and where do you want the series to go next??

One Ring To Rule Them

Oh, the cut content from the main campaign was ABSOLUTELY held back for Separate Ways. There were even files setting up the naming convention for "U3," which made U3's absence feel a bit like a tease. The data for the added Mercs characters was also data-mined around launch, so they were planning these updates for sure. From what I understand they just wanted to take time to make Separate Ways a bit more substantial than the original version was. I can't help feeling the cynicism here is a bit harsh, considering this DLC is literally the price of a sandwich. Also kind of iffy on the comparison to indie horror games here, if only because I can't really think of an indie horror game that's even slightly comparable to Resident Evil 4 as a gameplay experience. Doesn't indie horror typically go in a different genre direction? ...I dunno, just feels like a slightly "off" talking point to me. I think, for my part, that Separate Ways being a fairly well-fleshed-out but shorter campaign in Resident Evil 4's style always had some intrinsic value, since one of the only consistent criticisms of Resident Evil 4 that I ever hear (of the OG *and* the Remake) is that it goes on for too long.

Yeah an indie game would be way different but that's sort of the point, a chance to experience something fresh rather than more of RE4 again.

Separate Ways genuinely surprised me. I never liked the original at all and I was really surprised just how substantial this new version was. To the point that it essentially feels like doing a B Scenario. I don't know if this will be a hot take or not, but I found this new Separate Ways on its own a far better and more worthwhile product than the 3 remake in its entirety. I thought the developers were very clever with re-implementing some of the original's cut content. Some was done in very genius ways, I really liked how that Red Zealot you had to chase in the original was brought back and now you chased him around the hedge maze instead. I was half-expecting him to pop up with a massive Gatling gun. I know you weren't the biggest fan of what the main campaign replaced it with (which was the El Gigante throwing the debris if memory serves correctly) but I thought it was a nice change-up personally. I did think it was pretty strange the hanging cages weren't brought back though, I mean Ada's grapple gun already makes her a better fit for the fight as it is also. And while I usually agree that more creative nuance to horror always trumps crazy-action setpieces, this one time I don't. Mainly because this is a remake of RE 4 and I think it needed some more more actiony cheese. Ada shredding that monster apart with the lasers made me grin, primarily for how silly those QTEs were.
