The School Trip
You wanna know when things changed?
Well, it was all during that one school trip. Y’know, that one up in the mountains. The one where it rained pretty much the entire time. Do you remember it?
No, no…not the one where Tommy got his arm trapped in that vending machine. Although, yeah, that was a good trip, but only mostly because of Tommy himself and the fact that those jerks left me alone.
Yeah, those Jerks. Do you remember who I mean? Those guys who used to pick on me all the time. Jarad, Nate, and Kevin. Those guys.
You really don’t remember?
Ah, I guess it was more of a big deal for me than it was for you. I guess that’s understandable. You probably thought that it was just a bit of fun, something to try to cheer me up, maybe? In truth, Juno, you kinda saved my life that night.
I’m being dramatic?
You think so?
Well, how about I tell you what happened the night from my point of view?
Just listen, okay? It meant a lot to me, and you’ll see why.
That day…
“Sir!” Kevin shouts out from the back of the bus. “Sir! Otto stinks, Sir! I think he shit himself!”
The entire bus bursts out in laughter. They all glare in my direction, and I shrink in my seat.
“Didn’t feel like washing, Otto?” Jarad, sitting in the seats behind me, shouts out, showing off to the rest of the class.
Once again, I sink further into my seat. No friend or ally at my side to protect me from the stares, only the judgmental eyes of everyone around me making me feel so small.
“Shut up!” The teacher, from the front of the bus, shouts out, pointing in Kevin’s direction. “That’s enough, boys! Otto’s lack of personal hygiene has nothing to do with you.”
Laughs follow, but as the teacher glares harder, it fades into silence. As Jarrad glances, disgusted in my direction, I know that’s not the end of the torment. I try my best to be unseen and unnoticed, but it doesn’t work.
“Otto…” Nate leans across the gap between our seats. “Does your mommy not love you or something? You look like a tramp and smell like one, too.”
I grip the bus seat handrail hard, staring directly ahead, hoping that he’d just leave me alone if I said nothing and didn’t engage with them.
“I’m talking to you.” Nate continues, his tone sharper as I ignore him. “You look like you haven’t washed your uniform in months. Do you like…live under a bridge or something, or can’t you afford a washing machine?”
I stare, holding back the tears. I don’t want to give them the satisfaction, but it’s every day. Why did I think the school trip would be any different?
The bus eventually arrives…
I look out the window at the rather sad-looking hotel. It might have been the grey skies and wet weather, but clearly the place has seen better days. Everyone slowly gets off the bus, but I don’t move. I wait until Jarad, Kevin, and Nate have long gone inside.
Eventually, I gather my backpack and make my way off the bus. Quiet, trying not to be seen by anyone, I’m surprised when the teacher taps me on the shoulder. Standing under the hotel's entrance awning, he looks down at me with a wry smile.
“Otto,” he says softly, resting a hand on my shoulder.
I look up at him. I can see the tired eyes through his wet glasses. “Sir?” I reply.
“Listen.” He takes in a breath as he looks past me. “There’s been a mix-up with the bookings. You were going to be staying with Tommy and that, but I’ve had to move you into a different grouped room.”
My face drops.
“Don’t look so worried,” Sir replies, forcing a smile as he looks me in the eyes. “I’ve put you with classmates of yours.”
My heart aches.
“W-W-Who, sir?” I ask, already dreading the answer.
“Erm….” He pushes up his glasses with one finger, staring down at the clipboard in his hand. “It’s with Jarad, Kevin, and Nate.” He lowers his clipboard and grins. “Lucky they’ve got a double bunk room, Otto.” He gently laughs it off. “Otherwise you’d have been sleeping outside….”
I can barely stop my lower lip from quivering.
“W-Why me, sir!?” I protest. “C-Can’t someone else from my original room move to theirs?”
“Umm…” he once again pushes up his glasses, glancing at his clipboard, confused. “N-No, not really, Otto. The rest of the boys in your room all selected to sleep in the same room together, and seeing as you didn’t request any friends in your room, it’s easier for you to just move across.” He clears his throat and pats my shoulder. “You understand, Otto, yeah?”
“Oh…” I speak in a monotone, too scared to show any emotion. “I…understand.”
That evening…
If you don’t remember what happened, let me tell you about it. That hotel, we shared rooms, didn’t we? Well, as much as I didn’t want to, I eventually built up the courage to go to the room I’d be sharing with Jarad, Nate, and Kevin.
Thankfully, they weren’t in there by the time I made my way upstairs. Maybe they were at the sports center or being jerks to someone else, I don’t know, but once I’d found out which bed was free, I placed my bag upon it and sat in silence for a little while, happy to be alone.
Mostly to calm my own nerves, but also to give me a break from everyone else. Not that I hated everyone, but I needed to recharge my social battery after the bus journey.
By the time evening came around, I’d made my way to the restaurant in the hotel. This is no different from lunchtime at school, in the sense that I had no one to sit with. However, I was starving, so I got some food from the buffet and sat down by myself.
The chocolate cake was nice. Do you remember it? You got like a little slice, but you could dispense as much ice cream from that machine as you liked. So, mine was swimming in it.
Anyways, as I was eating, trying to mind my own business and blend into the surroundings, Tommy came over to me out of the blue. He asked me if I wanted to join him and his friends at the spa before we all had to go to bed.
Honestly, I was a little surprised and kinda speechless. I wasn’t sure if Tommy was trying to wind me up or if the teacher had asked him to do so. Either way, someone reached out to me, so I happily agreed.
As Tommy told me their spa time slot, I said thank you, and he left. I thought things were looking up. Maybe this trip wouldn’t be so bad. However, that didn’t last long. The smile was wiped from my face almost instantly. Listening in to our conversation was Kevin, whom I hadn’t noticed was sitting nearby.
He wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to stick it to me. He acted all offended that I’d agreed to go with Tommy’s group to the spa even though I was part of their room. He got up in my face, pretending to be hurt, angry, and upset, even as he berated me, all the while wearing a smug smile.
I didn’t say anything back to him. I just let him call me names and tell me that I should be grateful that I’m even allowed in their room. That conversation ended with a hard punch to my shoulder and him questioning my sexuality.
I felt even more alone than I did before.
Was that what I get for even attempting to make friends? Clearly, it was, but there was no way I’d go to the spa with Kevin, Jarad, or Nate. They’d probably end up drowning me and then claiming it was a joke.
So, worried it would make me seem gay to go with Tommy, I didn’t go to either spa time slot.
What I knew, from overhearing staff members talk, was that none of our school was scheduled to use the spa and showers until later.
I decided to get my shower in early. I wasn’t going to have Kevin, Nate, and Jarad accuse me of not washing. No way. So, I rushed to the room, sure none of those boys were there. I gathered my wash stuff, so like my towel and my soap.
My plan was to get in and out quickly, so I didn’t take my backpack at all, which means I’d only have to hide my towel down my shirt, meaning if anyone saw me, they’d have no idea I was sneaking into the shower rooms early.
Pleased with myself, I showered without any issues, dried off, and went to collect the clothes I’d been wearing before washing. However, they were gone.
Obviously, I checked around the changing room, but yeah…vanished. So I was stuck in the middle of the hotel, with no change of clothes and just my towel. I started to panic.
I’m sure I don’t need to remind you what happened next.
Yeah, stuff happened, and yeah, it turned out Kevin, Nate, and Jarad had been following me and had stolen my clothes. They’d not only thrown my clothes outside in the rain, but the rest of my stuff too.
They delighted in showing me the pictures on my phone as I stood, scared and alone in that changing room, surrounded by those three boys who had been waiting for me to come out of the showers.
They claimed that they were helping me, letting the rain wash my ‘smelly clothing’. I’d packed all my favorite clothes for that trip, and they just threw them about outside the hotel. My family wasn’t well off, so it hurt even more knowing there’s no way I’d be able to buy anything new.
That’s pretty much what happened before you found me crying. They’d bullied me one too many times, and I just broke down into tears as they forced me into the female changing room, for a joke, locking me in by holding the door closed so I couldn’t get out.
When I first caught sight of you, Juno, I thought you were going to scream bloody murder. I’m sure you weren’t expecting a boy from your year having a mental breakdown on the floor in the girls’ changing room, but there you go.
I thank my lucky stars, to this day, that it was you who found me. You, Lyra, and Hanna.
I remember you glancing at me, unsure what to do. You must have taken pity on me because you wrapped your towel around me, too, and took me to your room.
I’m sure you remember…
Juno, Lyra, and Hanna’s Room…
“Girls!” Juno calls as I stand just behind her, wrapped in both our towels, still damp and shivering. “Girls, come on—we need to help Otto. Those stupid boys have stolen all his clothes!”
Lyra, sitting at the window, looks up, and my heart almost jumps out of my mouth. She stands, taps Hanna on her shoulder, making her take off her headphones to look at my sorry state.
“He’s terrified!” Juno exclaims. “I found him crying on the female changing room floor!”
“Gross,” Hanna glares in my direction. “Serves him right if he’s going ot be a perv.”
“No, no, it’s not like that!” Juno quickly defends me. “Jarad, Nate, and Kevin were all laughing outside. They forced him in there and… like I said, they stole all his clothes and threw them out into the rain!”
Hanna’s face drops, and Lyra turns with a gasp. “Are you serious?” Hanna follows up with a worried look.
“Yes,” Juno answers firmly, ushering me into their room as she shuts the door behind us. “I couldn’t just leave him on the floor crying.”
Thankfully, for me, who’s still just standing in a towel, Lyra comes over with a bathroom robe. “Here.” She says, handing the purple robe out to me. “You’re shivering. This should help.”
I take it from her, well aware that all three girls are staring at me. “T-T-Thank you,” I say, my teeth chattering as I put my arms into the robe, and the soft material clings to my wet body.
“Otto…” Hanna steps closer. “Do you want us to come with you to get your clothes back? Maybe we can tell the teacher, too?”
“N-No!” I answer in a panic, now standing in Lyra’s beautifully soft robe as mine and Juno’s towels fall at my feet in a pile.
“But, why?” Hanna asks as Juno and Lrya stand beside her, all staring at me, just as confused as to why I don’t want to get my clothes.
“T-T-They’ll….” I stutter, unable to clearly get across what I want to say. Cold, tired, and exhausted, I start to cry right there in front of them.
“Oh my gosh…” All three of them gasp, rushing to comfort me.
“It’ll make it worse!” I howl out, tears running down both my cheeks as my legs wobble, wanting me to just give up.
Whimpering, the girls comfort me with a three-way gentle hug before stepping back, allowing me some space. Juno tells me to sit on her bed, which I do. Then I watch as she, clearly the leader of this little group, takes charge of the situation.
“Lyra, Hanna.” She moves and looks out the window. “All of Otto’s belongs have been chucked into the road in the rain. You two go gather them up, and I’ll see to it that Otto is found something suitable from our clothes to wear!”
“Gotach!” Hanna replies.
“On it!” Lyra says.
Seconds later, the two girls give me a thumbs up, a soft smile, and leave the room in a flurry of activity. As the room settles into the silence, I watch Juno kneel beside the bed near me, reaching for her belongs to open out her suitcase right in front of me.
“Y’know…” she tucks her hair behind her ears as she opens her suitcase. “My Mom told me I shouldn’t bring so much stuff.” She looks up and smiles at me as the sheer amount of clothing in her suitcase becomes apparent. “Good thing I did, huh? Now, what clothes of mine do you think you’ll be most comfortable in?”
“Y-Your clothes?” My hands start to shake with worry. “I-I…I can’t wear girls' clothes.”
“Sure you can.” Juno lifts up a pair of pale pink, but soft-looking, jogging pants and smiles at me.
“N-NO…” I shake my head. “When I go back to the room, they will punch me and kick me for sure! They already think I’m gay, so girls' clothes will make them….pr-probably kill me or something.”
Juno pouts at me. “Well, you can’t go walking around the place in just a towel or Lyra’s robe, Otto, and your clothes will be soaking wet and need time to dry.” Juno puts aside the jogging bottoms and lifts out a plain-looking t-shirt. “For now, you’ll have to borrow some of mine.”
I shake my head again. “I really can’t.”
Ignoring me, Juno places the pale pink jogging bottoms onto the bed beside the plain white t-shirt. She then starts rummaging deeper into her suitcase.
“I don’t mind, Otto, honestly,” she says, searching with a smile on her face. “I was bullied when I was younger, so I know what it’s like.” She stops searching for a second and, with a long breath, looks deep into my eyes. “Lyra and Hanna rescued me from my bully back then, and now I want to help you, so…” She gives me a warm smile. “Just let me help you, okay?”
“Y-You were bullied?” I lean slightly closer to her, confused why such a popular girl was bullied.
“Uh-huh,” she nods once, looking down at her suitcase as she once again tucks hair from her eyes. “Girls can be just as mean as boys, let me tell you.”
“W-What happened?” I ask, almost breathless with surprise, that the confident and beautiful girl in front of me was subject to bullying, just like me, who is a complete sad sack loner.
Juno pauses for a moment before looking at me. “I’d rather not talk about it, Otto, if that’s okay. I’m sure you understand.”
I nod once
“Otto…” she says softly, looking a little distant. “Do you feel completely alone when surrounded by countless other people?”
I nod again.
“Do you feel like everyone is out to get you and no matter what you say or do, people say nasty things to you?”
Tears bubble in my eyes, and I once again nod.
“Do you wish that someone would just give you a break for once?”
I lip wobbles, and I try desperately not to cry in front of her again. I bit my lip and nod a third time.
“Well,” she smiles wide and then holds up a pair of plain white socks. “I’m helping you, okay? I’m not going to tease or make fun. I’m offering my clothes to wear because I don’t want you to catch a cold, okay? Now, please, put on my clothes.”
I wipe at my eyes and begin to shake my head.
“Otto…” she places a hand on my knee. “I’m not lying. I want to help. Please trust me.”
Tears well and spill down my cheeks as I meet her honest, caring gaze. I break down in that moment, lowering my head into my hands. “O-Okay,” I manage through the tears. “T-Thank you.”
Juno gives my knee another gentle squeeze, then turns back to her suitcase, pleased that I’ve listened. I sit there, breathing unevenly, wiping my face, trying to calm down as she rummages again.
“Alright,” she murmurs in thought. “You’ll need everything, not just the outer stuff.”
She pauses, then pulls something out more carefully this time. It takes me a second to realize what it is, and when I do, my face burns instantly.
Underwear. A pair of her underwear.
I just stare at them, even though, in reality, what she’s holding up is more akin to girl boxer shorts than traditional female briefs.
Juno looks up at me, completely calm, like this is the most normal thing in the world. “Hey,” she says softly, noticing my expression. “It’s okay. These are supposed to be like boyfriend underwear. No one will know the difference.”
“I… I can’t…” My voice comes out all shaky.
“They’re clean,” she adds quickly. “And honestly… they’re unisex. Just ignore the pink color.”
I stare at them, my hands gripping the edge of the bed. “I…” I swallow hard. “O-Okay…”
She smiles without teasing, just warm. “Good. Then it’s settled.”
She sets them down with the rest of the clothes and stands, turning her back slightly. “I’ll give you a bit of privacy. Just say when you’re done, yeah?”
I nod quickly, even though she is not looking.
My fingers feel clumsy as I untie the robe. For a second, I hesitate, my heart thudding like crazy, then I just force myself to move. I change as fast as I can, pulling on each piece like my life depended on it.
Her underwear feels strange at first, the fabric far softer than anything I own. Then I pull on her jogging bottoms. They fit snugly around my legs but hang loose at my narrow hips, so I tug the drawstring tight to keep them in place.
Then I pull the T-shirt over my torso, and it clings slightly to my still-damp skin. As I put it on, I notice the soft, delicate scent, a gentle, feminine smell that lingers and feels strangely comforting.
I stand there for a moment, adjusting everything, just waiting for her to turn around and start making fun of me. However, it is not as bad as I thought. It is… actually kind of comfortable.
“I’m… done,” I say quietly.
Juno turns back around immediately. Her eyes scan me, and for a split second, I panic, waiting for a laugh, a smirk, or a nasty comment.
Instead, she beams. “See?” she says. “You look great.”
I look down at myself, awkwardly tugging at the hem of the shirt. “Tight in places…” I move awkwardly as I’m a little crushed downstairs, before I slowly pull up the joggers that are sagging down my hips.
“You’ve got a really nice figure, Otto,” she replies without warning. “Clearly, you don’t have the hips for those jogging bottoms, but you look nice in that color. It suits you.”
I blink, caught completely off guard. “W-What?”
She shrugs like it is obvious. I’m saying the clothes fit you really well. Maybe even better than that stuff fits me, honestly.”
“Umn… thanks,” I mumble.
“Anytime,” she says, smiling as she kneels at the bed, shuts her suitcase, and slides it underneath.
Before I can say anything else, the door bursts open and Lyra and Hanna rush in, slightly out of breath, arms full of my extremely damp clothes. They drip onto the floor, and I’m incredibly embarrassed, but thankful beyond belief.
“We got everything!” Hanna announces.
“And it’s all completely soaked,” Lyra adds, making a face.
I shrink a little as they dump my clothes onto a chair. They are darker from the rain, clinging together, looking miserable.
“Oh, Otto…” Lyra says gently. “They really threw all of it out there, those nasty boys.”
Hanna is already moving, grabbing hangers and anything else in the room to hang stuff from. “We’ll hang them up. They should be dry by morning.”
Juno nods. “Good thinking.”
I sit quietly, watching as they work together, stringing up my clothes near the window, spreading everything out carefully so it can dry. I wonder to myself if I’m running their trip. It makes me feel small and pathetic.
When they finish, Hanna claps her hands once. “There. Crisis partially solved.”
Lyra turns to me, smiling softly. “How are you feeling, Otto?”
I hesitate, then look down at myself again. “Better… I think.” I then rub at my arm, well aware that it’s getting late and I’m certain these girls don’t want me hanging around. “I should… go back,” I say quietly. “It’s getting late, and I’ve already ruined your evening enough.”
The moment the words leave my mouth, my stomach sinks. The image of Jarad, Nate, and Kevin flashes in my head. I can already hear them calling me names. I can see them hitting me, locking me out of the room, or just plain calling me a homo.
Juno’s expression drops. “Otto… t-those boys scare you, don’t they? I can see the look of fear in your eyes.”
“No, they don’t!” I grunt back, trying to seem strong. “I’m fine,” I lie.
Hanna crosses her arms. “Are you sure? You’re shaking.”
I don’t respond, and silence stretches for a second as I focus on my breathing to calm my nerves.
“You’re not going back there tonight.” Juno breaks the silence, making me look up at her in surprise.
“I-I have to,” I reply, scared for what might happen if I don’t
“No, you don’t,” Hanna cuts in. “Who says you do? If those boys give you grief tomorrow, you’ll put tampons up their noses!”
“Yeah, wet ones!” Lyra enthusiastic agree’s before fixing me with a smile. “Fuck those guys. You’ll stay here with us tonight!”
My heart stutters. “I… I can’t just stay in the girls’ room…”
“Why not?” Juno asks. “You’ve been here most of the evening, and you’re already wearing my clothes, and honestly, the teacher’s probably drunk at the bar right now.”
“N-No… I-I shouldn’t.” I look away. “I-I don’t want people to think bad things about me.”
“People?” Hanna questions. “Do you really think we're going to let you walk back into the lion's den because you’re worried what ‘people’ will say. We’ve got you, Otto. Anyone says anything, and we’ll be shoving tampons where the sun doesn’t shine!”
“I think that’s what they're for,” Lyra giggles to herself, before stepping a little closer. “We’ve got a spare bed here, so….”
“Yeah, so there’s no way we’re going to just send you back to those boys knowing what they did today, Otto,” Juno adds softly. “Stay here with us, and we’ll look after you.”
“Right!” Lyra cheers, excited! “You’ll be an honorary girl for tonight!”
“OMG YEAH!” Lyra giggles gleefully. “That’s so exciting! How awesome would it be to get a real boy's opinion on stuff!”
“Ooo!” Juno claps her hands together like she’s had an amazing idea. “He could give us real advice on our outfits!”
They all turn to me, wide-eyed and hopeful.
“Please, Otto!” they say together, leaning close to me with their hands held together, pleading for me to stay. “Oh, please.”
“…Okay,” I whisper, hoping it will not cause more trouble, though quietly relieved that, for once, someone is giving me a break.
“Yay!” They all dance right there in front of me. Juno looks at me excitedly and winks. “We promise we won’t be too giry!”
“T-Thank you..” I mutter and smile warmly. “But please, be as girly as you like. I’m just happy someone is being nice to me for once.
“You got it, girl!” Juno blurts out, then gasps, quickly covering her mouth as a perplexed look spreads across her face. “S-Sorry, Otto. I did not mean to call you that. I just got a little excited, and I guess I already see you as one of us…”
“It’s okay…” I reply blashfully, a smile grin tugging at my lips. “I…kinda liked it.”
“Seriously?” Juno looks at me, stunned as Lrya and Hanna dance around behind her.
“Yup, I nod, unable to look her in the eye because of how embarrassed I feel. “I kinda liked it. Made me feel part of something.”
Juno stares, and I glance at the wide-eyed look of astonishment on her face. Slowly, she grins. “That’s awesome, Otto! If you wanna be one of the girls, then we’ll make you one of the girls!”
“Okay…” I reply quietly, throwing caution to the wind. “I’d like that.”
