This is the fifth in a series of illustrations that will expand the lore of Hotsatyr's magic world at each solstice and equinox! 🌷
In a month's time, it will be the Spring Equinox, when life begins to emerge from the ground, stretching out from the cold winter.
I have many things to share about this illustration, so let us take it step by step.
Who is this couple? He is the son of Nuada, Prince Tadg mac Nuadat. She is Maelrúna. Young but composed, she is a direct descendant of The Dagda and fully aware of the weight of her lineage. She approaches her first ritual union not with innocence, but with discipline and quiet anticipation. Raised to understand that fertility is a rare and sacred moment for the Tuatha, she feels no vanity in Tadg’s choice, only responsibility. After careful genealogical review, physical evaluation, and formal agreements between their families, she has been chosen as his partner, as a vital link in her people’s survival.
Where are they? They are in the most privileged spot in the Valley of Fál (also known as the Speaking Valley). This is where the Stone of Fál rests and where the Tuatha gather every Spring Equinox to perform their ritual of procreation.
What is the Stone of Fál?The Fál, Lia Fáil, or Stone of Fál, is a magical stone located in the center and deepest part of the valley that bears its name. It is also known as the Stone of Destiny or the Speaking Stone. It is one of the four sacred treasures of the Tuatha, brought from the mythical City of Falias, one of the Four Ancient Cities. Lia Fáil has the ability to sing melodiously and solemnly when a successful fertilization takes place in its surroundings. It also sings with a deep, masculine voice when the stone is touched by the legitimate King of the Tuatha. The mark at the top of the stone is the oldest and the one from which the rest of the designs originated.
When does this happen? This day is the only day of the year when the Tuatha are fertile, making it a ritualistic, sacred moment that sustains their people.
Why don't Tadg and Maelrúna touch each other?Unlike the satyrs, whose passion is wild and unrestrained, the Tuatha abstain from all touch except what is essential for reproduction. Every movement, every breath, is measured. Their union is a disciplined rite, performed with reverence rather than desire. Pleasure is irrelevant, devotion and responsibility are the most important.
