The practice video for the spread cull. This utility move allows you to do 3 things: secretly gather any number of cards (the aces, the spades, all the red cards, etc.) at the top, control one or multiple selections, and force a card with an extremely deceptive switch. In this video, we’ll start off with the basic mechanics, and then you’ll practice the finer points by learning to cull the four aces, and finally I cover the other applications mentioned above. Unlike simpler techniques such as the double lift, this move is rarely covered in print and video sources, and with a few exceptions, it’s usually not explained very well. Hopefully, this video will clear up any confusion you might have!

PRACTICE DRILLS:

Randomly choose two numbers from 1-13. Let’s say the two random numbers are 5 and 11. Shuffle the deck, then spread through the cards and openly remove all of the fives, and while you do, secretly cull the jacks to the back of the deck. The reason for doing this is so that you don’t only learn to look for the aces, but rather, learn to look for whichever cards you need.

To practice culling larger numbers of cards, randomly put the two jokers into the deck and shuffle it. Then, spread through the deck and cull all the cards of one suit (eg. the spades) or of one color (e.g. the red cards). Make sure the face card of the deck is part of the group you’re culling.

Note the top card of the deck. Move this top card to fourth from the top using the overhand injog shuffle (it’s your job to figure out the proper shuffling sequence). Force the fourth card from the top on an imaginary spectator using the spread cull force. Then, take the card back and control it to the bottom with the spread cull control. Finally, shuffle this card to the top of the deck using an overhand shuffle. You’ve now forced a card, controlled it to the bottom, and then back to the top! This can be repeated cyclically.
