Heystax

Ishida did lose his arm there but it's censored for the anime

Tony

so yeah... ishida's arm does get cut off in the manga, weird that they choose to censor that when ulquiorra loses an arm later that episode lmao

Big meaningless rant incoming, breaking down the whole fight and character stuff a bit. Im sorry if u read this. some stuff i cant elaborate on for spoilers. Have fun ig. ulquiorra was a nihilist edgelord who didn't understand the concept of heart and the struggle most of the main cast worked towards that he deemed futile, and he is representation of the emptiness that comes with death since every espada is themed after an aspect of death. The talk he had with orihime a few episodes ago that it flashbacked to was him sort of mocking and questioning her regarding her blind faith in her friends as well as her genuine empathy for everyone in the conflict. Orihime kind of manages to shut him down a bit in this conversation through her own faith in the group and realizing for herself that the desire to help the others that got her into this mess is something shared by everyone, more or less they all care about her and they would sacrifice everything for her and she would do the same for them. Ulquiorra obviously thinks this is bs and responds that heart can't exist because he can't see it, playing up the whole nihilist "that's illogical" angle. Orihime's strength lies in her unwavering compassion for everyone including her foes, and that quality extends to ichigo a good deal but it manifests as matter-of-fact respect more so than kindness. Critically, remember that ichigo and orihime are 16 at the most and have both never actually killed anyone aside from c list hollows (not arrancar) but that's different because they are sending them to soul society. So, after ichigo and ulquiorra fight for a while and ulquiorra repeatedly tries to make ichigo give in with greater and greater leaps of power, he says it makes no sense for him to try and fight him so the heart is stupid, ichigo says he's fighting cuz he has to win, and ulquiorra kills ichigo. Not like he wounds him grievously, ichigo died for a bit. Orihime panics as soon as she realizes her heals aren't working at all, and the situation is hopeless just as ulquiorra hoped. Ishida loses an arm temporarily as ulquiorra toys with him. As Caucasian ichigo said a while back to ichigo, "don't die" or something idk. Ichigo dies, hollow completely takes over for a good second after getting triggered by orihime asking for help. Ulquiorra asks who this person is. This ichigo destroys ulquiorra with a cero, more or less leaving his life on a short countdown. He goes to mutilate ulquiorra, 🤓 stops him and gets stabbed because ichigo would never do this and its kinda fucked for anyone to do, let alone an actual child (depends on your definition i suppose but id say 15-16 qualifies). ulquiorra survives long enough to end this transformation by more or less getting him to uncontrollably release all his energy by breaking one of his horns while charging up a cero to delete 🤓. ichigo lives because while a hollow he instantly regenerated. Now this is the part where I feel a lot of people get confused since the characterization supporting the following sequence isn't super blatant and stated and restated, more so just shown. Ichigo wakes up, sees ulquiorra dying, and sees he stabbed 🤓. Ichigo is immediately confused and somewhat distraught. He killed someone and hurt his friend without knowing all because he failed, more or less. He doesn't really know how to process this so he tries to rationalize by saying it wasn't him, and is sort of in a brief confused and self-destructive spiral, thus the whole thing with the potential self mutilation demonstrating his incredible guilt and his empathy (kinda). Orihime, at the last moment, still treats ulquiorra with kindness and these acts of genuine emotion and "care" ig break through his nihilistic outlook and make him reach for connection for the first time in his life seconds before he dies. It's not a weird romantic thing, it's more supposed to be tragic that he died just as he understood the meaning of empathy, connection, and the heart. This is my interpretation based on reading bleach and surrounding material a lot. Lmk if u have questions ig. Forgive me for yapping🙏.

Real talk though, I think some of the breaks made the themes / character arcs of Ulquiorra and Ichigo (and to a lesser extent Orihime, although they did really hoe her super hard) a lot more difficult to follow. The thematic / emotioal themes do pay off really well for me, I'll try to break down what I took away from this whole fight. Ulquiorra's whole shtick was his detachment and emptiness, so seeing Orihime keep her spirits up in the face of what looked like true despair really bothered him. That's why he kept coming by and asking her all those strange questions, imo he was frustrated that she wasn't breaking and staying strong through her circumstances. Same thing with Ichigo when they fought, Ulquiorra kept getting so irritated that despite being clearly, completely outmatched Ichigo refused to acknowledge the situation he was in and keep fighting, because he "had to" to protect the people around him. All the talk about where your heart ( // your 'fighting spirit') is located, with Ulquiorra even saying "if I rip open your chest is it there? If I split your skull open could I find it there?" straight to Orihime, I think concludes with showing that your heart is in the palm of your hands, given out to the people you trust and protect. Ulquiorra was slowly becoming more human, while Ichigo became fully Hollow. He came to understand that people fight even in true despair (like literally fucking dying) to protect the people they care for, partially through Orihime's conversations throughout the arc always giving her heart out to her friends when she's locked away, and then finally with Ichigo's relentlessness through death to protect Orihime. They almost met in the middle for a split second, but he faded away. That's what I think he's going for at least lmfao, the execution is up for discussion lmao

I think the anime's not doing the source material any favors by packing so much extra dicking around in de-emphasizing the important moments, but Kubo never emphasized those scenes or really hammered the themes home outside of those scenes (a big Bleach problem in general imo). I watched the show as a kid and it took me reading the manga as an adult to really get a sense of how Ulquiorra was changing, and see how Orihime was affecting him. It's hard to pick up the thematic and emotional and significance of those moments when they're played completely straight and the next scene is Uryu and Pesche fucking around in a hallway or some shit lmfao.

The anime ruined Orihime’s character. They kept drawing out her crying moments in it and it did not make me like her that much until I read the manga

Trinity Schiffer😈

Fun fact: in the manga he actually ripped Uryu’s arm off 😭

I basically entirely agree. Bleach is an unfortunate example of that annoying "it's better in the manga" comment being pretty accurate. Bleach chapters are not nearly as content-packed at face value as something like one piece, and adapting chapters at the rate they do definitely hurt the story in many ways. Personally I do enjoy the execution of almost every part of the story in the manga, but it took me a reread to get there. I really love the interpretive aspects of the story due to how many beats are left somewhat vague or executed subtly, making discussion more fun imo. Like my interpretation of these events is similar to yours but still different in some respects, but imo both are completely valid.

I think it’s funny how I warned you about the beginning of the episode spoilers on my filler list, and you just went "Damn! I feel like that's a spoiler." 🤣
