◉ Early Life
Chimalpili was born into a noble family in Tenochtitlan. His lineage can be traced back to Motecuhzoma Ilhuicamina, the fifth tlatoani of Tenochtitlan. However, as generations passed, the family’s kinship ties to the ruling lineage weakened, so their prestige and status declined. Chimalpili's father, Itztollinqui (1441~), dedicated his life to make his family prosperous again. He built a successful military career and married a close relative of the future king Axayacatl. After he was elected, Axayacatl granted the title of tecuhtli (lord) to Itztollinqui. As a result, his children, including Chimalpilli, were able to grow up in a wealthy household.
Chimalpili is the third son of Itztolinqui. Unlike the other sons, who grew up to be successful warriors, young Chimalpilli was so frail that barely survived from a lot of diseases. But he was bright from an early age and showed an interest in studying, so Itztolinqui enrolled him in calmecac (noble school) at the tender age of six. Chimalpili was especially gifted in writing/drawing (In Nahuatl, ‘to draw’ and ‘to write’ are the same word: icuiloa. This is because Mesoamerica used hieroglyphs, making the distinction between the two unclear.) He was so talented that several priest-teachers at the calmecac considered his early graduation and employment as a novice scribe when he was only fifteen. However, this was put on hold due to a series of major events, including the major defeat against Purepecha and the death of Axayacatl.
◉ Career
When Tizocic succeeded the throne in 1481, Chimalpili entered the court as a novice scribe at the age of seventeen. Many documents passed through his hands, including tribute lists, genealogies, histories, maps, and legal papers. He also worked on murals and monuments, most notably the renovation of the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan. He painted murals and colored statues along with numerous other artisans.
In 1487, under the leadership of the new tlatoani, Ahuitzotl, the inauguration of the Great Temple was held. At this event, Chimalpilli received a huge reward by the king. Two years later, he was appointed royal scribe, working in the king's immediate presence. He is now in charge of writing according to the king’s personal needs, rather than working on murals and monuments. Which is why he is called amatlacuilo, or “one who draws/writes on paper.”
◉ Personal Life
Chimalpili lacks many of the desired virtues of Mexica society. He has an antisocial personality, is not particularly eloquent, and most importantly, his timid nature and lack of athletic ability kept him from becoming a warrior early on. As a result, he grew up to be an introverted man, often expressing his dissatisfaction with mainstream society. His fellow scribes, on the other hand, hold him in high regard and respect for his outstanding abilities.
His favorite pastime is visiting the libraries of Tenochtitlan and Tetzcoco. When he is off-duty, he often spends the entire day reading and copying books. He also enjoys gardening. Despite his aristocratic background, he is often referred to as an oddball by other nobility because he works on his own garden.
He, just like Xochimazatl, possesses a strong sexual drive and virility. However, he is particularly shy around women, thus his sexual partners are largely men, including Xochimazatl. This is not to say that he is unwilling to have sex with women. In fact, ever since Xochimazatl introduced him to prostitutes, rumors of his prodigious virility have traveled so widely that he has earned the nickname Yoyontzin, the Libidinous One. He also refuses to marry and keeps putting it off, preferring the uninhibited sexual relations.
◉ Relationship with others
Xochimazatl, who is four years younger, is a lifelong friend of Chimalpilli. They first met in 1476, when Xochimazatl enrolled in calmecac. At the time, Xochimazatl was eight years old and Chimalpilli was twelve. During their school years, they hung out and got into a lot of mischief, often causing trouble among the priests. However, they were able to graduate because they both excelled in their respective fields. From then on, Xochimazatl assisted Chimalpilli in keeping up with the fierce competition among the elite, while Chimalpilli helped Xochimazatl in his academic field. They still spend a lot of time together.
Chimalpilli first met Citlalin in 1486, at the age of twenty-two. It was Xochimazatl who introduced him to her. This was also Chimalpilli’s first sexual encounter with a woman, and he has since paid her frequent visits. Citlalin considers him one of her regulars and finds his shy, submissive behavior cute.
