For Das Boot, I recommend the 3h29m Director's Cut (with German audio). This is the only version streaming in the US. BTW, "Das Boot" rhymes with "The Boat" (not "The Boot" 😆)

Love the 1st half of the Deer Hunter, Das Boot, IMO Best Sub movie ever.

I'm selecting Jarhead because it is based on thebook written by Anthony Swofford and I worked with a former Marine who knew Swofford personally. Also We Were Soldiers because, well, not only Mr. Gibson, heh, but because my dad served in Vietnam. He was a helicopter mechanic and was offered a chance to join the Airborne, took it and was sent to Vietnam. Unfortunately he saw some stuff and did some things and struggled with it the rest of his life. I have been interested in anything surrounding Vietnam my whole life, perhaps just trying to understand what happened to him. Great choices Kate.

Das Boot. That's a movie where I read the book back in the early 00's still never watched the film. But I've seen probably 20-30 minutes of various scenes over the years, so I feel like I have seen it. Kate isn't going wrong with any of the choices, so I vote with my own interests. 😉😄

I’ve only seen a few of these movies, so I guess that helps cut down the choices for me. My first choice is Troy. I commented in the Group Chat that I am most likely going to wait for The Odyssey to make its way to a streaming service and watch it as a double feature along with Troy. I think Troy would be a very fun and exciting watch for you…much like Pirates of the Caribbean. Fantastic action sequences, an amazing cast that includes Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, (okay, roll your tongue back into your mouth 😂), Brendan Gleeson, and a drop dead gorgeous Diane Kruger, who is completely worthy of playing Helen of Troy, the catalyst for the Trojan War. Much like Braveheart, it takes a lot of liberties with the historical facts. But also, just as with Braveheart, I really don’t care. It’s just a great popcorn flick. Oh…and the movie score is by James Horner. Enough said. And speaking of Braveheart, my 2nd choice is We Were Soldiers starring, of course, Mel “Every man dies. Not Every Man Really Lives” Gibson. But the Braveheart connection doesn’t stop at Mel, because this movie is also directed by Randall Wallace, who co-wrote Braveheart with Mel. This is one of my favorite war movies because the film doesn’t just focus on the horrors of war experienced by those fighting on the battlefields of Vietnam, but it also focuses on the anguish of the families those men left behind at home. Madeline Stowe’s performance breaks my heart.
