This is my third favorite Clint Eastwood western, right behind Unforgiven and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. But it was my mom’s favorite Eastwood movie. My mom had a big time crush on Eastwood, and she talked about this movie a lot. I asked her several times if I could watch it with her, but she thought it was too violent for me. It wasn’t until I was around 12 years old that she finally gave in. Eventually I bought her the VHS tape for her birthday, and then it became a kind of ritual that we would watch it together whenever she felt like swooning over Clint. That’s why this movie is special to me.

Josey Wales is Clint's best film as a director. Because of it's breadth and scope, I put it above Unforgiven. The background of the Kansas - Missouri Border War, Quantrill's Raiders, the Kansas Jayhawkers and the Southern Bushwackers, Chief as a Cherokee and the Trail of Tears, it's full of historical depth. Then there's the Comanche dominance of the Southwest as the family move into Texas. All of this historical background gives depth of color to the characters. And the overall triumphant theme: out of the chaos of the maelstrom, life can be renewed.

I always liked Clint Eastwood films. He is very versatile. You mentioned Dirty Harry in which there are a few, I think the first was the best. He also did Any Which Way but Loose which also had a few films. You can see "Laura Lee" again in all of them. Clint and Sondra Locke were an Item in the 1970's. Their breakup actually established what is called Palimony... similar to alimony but for unmarried couples. You will also see John Quade, who "saved" Laura Lee, Sondra Locke, from being molested in this film. He plays a bigger role in Any Way, but is still a baddie.

My favorite western/Eastwood movie. “10 out of Bloody 10” says it better than I can.

Now you can watch Hang 'em High or High Plains Drifter, also starring each Clint Eastwood. BTW, if a movie was produced by Malpaso, you can bet it was directed by Clint, and probably starring him as well :)

Classic Clint Eastwood and in my opinion, one of his best. Both acted and directed by him. Of course, wouldn't be his last by any means.
