Hello, I'm currently on the page titled "To update or not to update" looking for information on how to prevent automatic game updates on Steam. The link is https://www.patreon.com/posts/152399379 I've tried it myself, and sometimes the update still happens. I can't see your content, only the title. Thanks !

He hasn't filled the post in yet; it is just a place holder for now. What I have done to avoid updates on Steam, is to just copy and paste the main game folder to another location. Then let Steam update the original file. Then drag the copy you made back over and replace the original with it. That has worked a few times for me. I don't know if it is 100% fool proof though. That is essentially how people still play GTA V and RDR2 in VR to this day, they just drag the older version files into their current game folder.

Hello Brandon, thanks for your answer. RDR2 ...the best one. Do you think any of them have Crystal Light? I'd be willing to play it for the fifth time.

Brandon(Post Maester)

I haven't tried RDR2 with my Crystal Light, but I have played GTA V with it. If it works, it probably works with the Crystal Light as well, but I haven't tried it personally. You could always find a YouTube video and give it a shot :)

Youtube is my friend. Thanks!

Incidentally I have a foolproof way to spoof Steam and make it think it's up to date, if you are interested. It's better than the standard advice on this of just setting the "update on game launch" or making the manifest read only stuff. With a few changes to the manifest file the "Update Required" simply goes away. Let me know if you want details.

I'm certainly interested - please share details.

Sure i'm interested !

Brandon, can we do that with RDR2 and GTA5 now somehow?

Brandon(Post Maester)

Yeah, they are still playable. Just look for YouTube videos from the last year or so on how to get them working. They usually have the files you need and instructions. I played some GTA V a couple months ago.

I hope this article will soon be available, especially with the pace of Crimson Desert patches :)

forget it, it's the old version of AER with tons of ghosting

For those interested in the foolproof way to spoof steam into thinking it is up to date, search Youtube for this exact string "How to launch any game on steam IN ONLINE MODE without updating". It was a video made by trollface... and a little over 3 minutes long. When you make the changes to the manifest file, just make sure you first completely quit out of steam. One you make the changes and start steam back up, the blue update state for the game will magically disappear and it thinks it's up to date. Works perfectly in every case I have tried.

Thanks! I'll check it out and bookmark it for future sharing :) After I try it of course. Edit: Yeah, that makes sense. Much easier workaround too.

The easiest and least intrusive way I have found so far is just to make the game manifest file read-only. E.g., for GTA V Enhanced, the file is this: "d:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\appmanifest_3240220.acf" (my Steam library is installed on disk D). Steam shows the game needs an update, but it fails silently during the update. The current version of the game will play just fine. If you want to update in the future, remove read-only from the manifest and update. Bingo. Nice and simple! :)

wonder if it works same with other games like cyberpunk

It works for any Steam game. You just need to find game manifest file (it’s a text file, open it with any reader, there is a game name in plain text).
