[Updates at the end of the post]
So, what happened?! I said I was going to release a new R.E.A.L. VR version with fixes and improvements, and then just disappeared into thin air?
Well, actually yes, that's sort of what happened. Only the air was so thin, it was more like empty space. So empty... it felt almost dead.
As if it had been there from 2023, just waiting to be experienced in VR []-D
I literally got hundreds of requests for this game. By which I mean, Tomo asked for it a couple hundred times, and then another dozen people or so also wanted to see it in VR.
Just kidding :-P
But seriously, this one is for you, Tomo. And for all the amazing Patrons who have been supporting me for years in this amazing adventure.
I should mention, you might want to pack one extra pair of underwear before venturing on the USG Ishimura. Don't say I didn't warn you! It's dark in space. And in the dark live... things. Or are they even alive?
No spoilers. But playing this title makes me feel like the developers must have thought they would be releasing an official VR version at some point. We all know that didn't happen, but in an alternate universe, the same assets and level design could have led to one of the most amazing VR games ever released. I'm talking in the league of Half-Life: Alyx.
And in case you didn't think this game was scary enough... I implemented a full-fledged first person camera that will get you up close and personal with every detail in the game, like the huge soda cans lying around, the posters on the walls, the wealth of information on computer screens, the greeblies on every surface, and of course the Necromorphs rushing at you wanting nothing but to rip the head right off your body.
This R.E.A.L. VR release (v2607.31.2_early_access for the EA version which includes DS2023 and DOOM; v2607.31.1_public for the free one) also brings changes and improvements to other titles in our list:
DOOM (https://store.steampowered.com/app/379720/DOOM/ ): The code dealing with the direction of movement and shooting has been completely rewritten. Frantic mantling during combat will no longer cause the gun to become misaligned with the direction the camera is pointing at. It took a big effort to fix this issue, maybe too big to be justifiable; but with id Software being essentially disbanded, I believe we must cherish the Doom's that we have, because we're probably never going to get any others.
DOOMTDA (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3017860/DOOM_The_Dark_Ages/ ): This release adds support for the Revelations DLC, and it extends VR compatibility to the official "Update 4 Hotfix 2" that came out a couple of days ago. Due to the extent of the changes, and the likelihood of more official updates coming, I have to bring this title back into Early Access. If you downloaded the previous public release, you can still use it to play in VR but you'll need to downgrade your game version.
DG (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1259420/Days_Gone/ ): To balance out for the need to bring DOOMTDA back into Early Access, I'm moving DG to the public release. You will be able to play this title in VR without any need to support me financially (although if you decide to do it anyway I very much appreciate it!).
CD (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert/ ): I updated the framework to support the latest official update, 1.15.00 1.16.00 1.16.01.
Update Aug 2: The new v2608.2.2 EA release should solve the issue of DS2023 not entering VR on systems with an AMD GPU. Please let me know if it's working for you!
Enjoy your Zero-G adventures! And try to stay alive []-D
