I am almost ready to put out a release candidate that should mitigate the freezing problems that some of you are experiencing, particularly after the DLSS update. It should be no more than a day or two away.

In the meantime, I would like to have a quick hardware poll to help me allocate development resources in the future. I already know from the Steam hardware survey that only about 15% of gamers use AMD video cards, but I suspect that number may be even lower when restricting the sample to VR users.

If you have more than one PC, for example a laptop and a desktop, please choose the answer that relates to the PC that you typically use for VR.

Glad to hear you’re working on the fix ! Thank you very much . I’ve been crashing constantly during cutscenes on my Nvidia 1080ti. Appreciate all the hard work as always . Keep up the good work !

Shawn Colton

Nvidia GTX Geforce 1660 Super!

Momentum

I am ready for testing on the freezing issue!

Danny Shaw

Nvidia 3060 gpu and AMD Ryzen 5000 series cpu.

Miguel Augusto

Tried upgrading from GTX 1660 Super to an AMD 6800 XT. Had to return it because it sucked for VR. Many issues. Got a RTX 3080 instead.

realvr

That's interesting. What kinds of issues?

Miguel Augusto

Usb 3.0 not recognized for Quest 2 direct link; On GTA some graphics (reflections or shadows) were not rendered; Stability issues; (honestly not recalling all of it now, but the usb 3 was a big one) Also since Nvidia can have Fidelity FX and DLSS but AMD can't have DLSS... I figured it's best to have the option. When I got the NVIDIA it was like miles away better from AMDs... for just about 100€ more.

Clint

Great job as always Luke! For your records and slight pissing contest purposes, I'm running a 3090 and 5950x.

The freezing issue has been a nag. I have one freeze every 2 hrs on the average. I rarely have freezing when I don’t use the game full map, so there may be some relationship. There was also one mission which froze every time in the same cut-scene, so I had to disable VR to get through it.

dreamking

BTW I use a 1080 Ti. So, it doesn’t have much to do with DLSS

Rvr

More like, what card can you even get right now. 5950x with 6700xt actually does good with RDR2 VR. It beats my Nvidia system because I haven't been able to get a 3080.

realvr

Which preset are you using, and what frame rates do you get with the 6700 XT?

Nicky Butler

Got an alienware r12 with 3080 gpu. I do get freezes sometimes depends what resolutions im using. And in video memory i try to keep it below 3,400. Most of my seetings in game are medium or low

Miguel Augusto

Ah yes... it was also particularly bad for the quest 2 because it needs to do performant job of encoding the video for sending to the quest ( and then get decoded on the quest side) and it is not good for that, as opposed to the NVIDIA gpus. With "Native" PC VR it would be ok, but with the quest 2 it only worsened was was already not very good looking. Although I believe they eventually figured out a fix on some new driver version for the usb 3 stuff.

Nicky Butler

I keep freezing on a mission called sodom back to gamorah. Its the bank robbery in valentime.

realvr

Wow, thanks! That looks real bad O_o

Miguel Augusto

I did that on Ultra with Ryzen 5 3600 and NVIDIA RTX 3080... And am still playing on Ultra.

Grocs

Nice work Luke, thanks. I have a Nvidia RTX 3070 on my main VR machine. I do get some jitters but touch wood haven't had a crash yet.

Kalell

I think it's going to be difficult for AMD to overtake Nvidia like they did Intel. Intel got complacent and thought they could just keep doing small upgrades over time and AMD wouldn't catch up. Nvidia doesn't do that. They sure make you pay for it though.

Brad Lewington

Are you getting acceptable frames with that card Shawn? Running a 1070 here. Not good ATM but hoping something can be done.

Shawn Colton

Yeah, it plays Half-Life ALYX butter smooth.

Kalell

I guess since others are sharing their setup I'll share mine. I have a 5900x and 3080 with 32GB of RAM at 3400MHz. I tried 3600MHz but it was unstable. It's barely a month old. I upgraded from a 4790K and 1080 Ti. It's definitely more powerful than what I had, by quite a bit, but it's not the massive jump I was expecting. Still happy with it though.

Nicky Butler

Before dlss update or after?

Josh A

I’m a Mac Pro 2019 using bootcamp on an AMD Radeon Pro 580x. I know I’m a small percentage but thankful I can run it.

realvr

You're right, the freezing issue is not DLSS- related, but for some people it's gotten worse after the update

Miguel Augusto

I'm not liking the current state of DLSS. I keep it off. (after trying to like it so many times)

Nicky Butler

Iv not tried that mission without dlss. Might try later but i dont think dlss is the problem its maybe something else theyv changed in the update. Lot of people reporting freezes since it was updated. And to be honest this game was never well optimised for pc imo. Its always ran like crap for me since it was released. Iy was a console game first then came to pc a year later

RTX 3090 with a I9 rocket lake to just hold me over until the new Intel Raptor lake, ddr5 and pcie 5.0 comes out.

martin allums

I think that is specific to Quest. 6800 xt worked perfectly for me, much better than my 1080 ti. I have different, hardware related issue with mine, but I was able to play at the highest settings on both of my headsets, (Index, /Reverb G2) without issues. The bigger issue for me is having to have different scripts for GTA / RDR2

martin allums

It also helps that I upgraded after all of the software related issues were fixed by AMD. noticed the age of the links you shared

Rvr

I had to redo settings after last updates. It's now back to where I'm satisfied. Of course it's no 3090 so sacrifices must be made. Start with O (Hub) preset. Set Res Scale to 2/1. Start turning grass lod and shadows down, etc, to push frames up. I applaud your work with TAA fix but sadly it drops my frames by about 5-8 so I must lose it. I turn TAA to medium and prefer sharpness over minor edge shimmer. That's the the essence of it. HP Reverb G2 I get high 80's at best, currently on a mission with several people and a horse and buggy and seeing 87-88. Camp and towns are lower. Mind my view, I UE VR dev and now have an iron stomach, but this works well for me.

RTX 3090 here as well.
