This update needs to be seen to be believed. And actually, it needs to be seen in VR, but since VR videos are not yet a thing I made a video on YouTube :-)
Video description:
- 0:00 Danger/awareness markers above enemies' heads now work in VR.
- 0:11 Those enemies look tough, better use my new trick...
- 0:26 Never since F.E.A.R., the wonderful 2005 game created by Craig Hubbard, was so much slow-flying debris seen in a video game!
- 0:49 Don't lose your head about this.
- 1:09 Look ma, I'm flying!
- 3:00 Dodge this.
- 4:22 Character creation in VR is now fully 3D. I had to choose the male model (sorry folks) because otherwise YT would age-restrict my video. Such is the society we live in, that ultraviolence and dismemberment is perfectly fine, but God forbid that a female breast might forever sear the retinas of an innocent soul.
- 6:27 The world map is restored to its former glory, and then some. In previous versions of CP2077, it used to be possible to control the camera while navigating the world map (although world markers and paths were unusable), but since patch 1.5 the map can only be seen in 2D. I fixed that. You can now fly freely around the map with your gamepad and access the position markers at the same time!
- 7:40 My mod is fully compatible with most others. See an example of the beautiful Metro System at work. Ride in style, if a bit lonely, high above the city.
- 9:14 Another example of mod that now works in VR. Playable Arcade Machines!
What's new in this update:
- Previous versions of my CP2077 VR mod disabled the awareness/danger markers above enemies' heads because they didn't display correctly in VR. Unfortunately that would also prevent the "Breaching... hacked" indicators from being visible. I've found a proper way to fix them both, so now they're enabled and working as expected.
- Users with exotic keyboards will be glad to know that the mod now starts with a popup appearing automatically on screen, which allows you to configure the key used to open the overlay. That should get rid of the "How do I open the overlay" support requests and usher in the brand new category "How do I close the popup?" ;-)
- Character creation is a fundamental part of the beginning of the game, and the models there are rendered with amazing detail and look almost lifelike, so it bothered me to no end that (being part of a menu) that interaction was drawn in 2D on a virtual screen. It took a lot of patience, but I managed to fix that. You can now, ahem, play with human-size dolls and customize and paint and tattoo them and... okay, I'll just stop here.
Update Apr 5: The new 3.3.1 release attached below extends the same stereoscopic 3D treatment to the "Change appearance" option that appears in some mirrors, like the one in V's apartment. - Another forced 2D interaction that bothered me was navigating the world map. Older versions of the game actually had a "Free camera" mode that allowed you to tilt the map to almost see it in 3D, although that would remove all the world markers and routes which made the mode basically useless. Instead of fixing the markers, CD Projekt RED decided to get rid of the interaction altogether from official patch 1.5. I decided to go the opposite way: I made the map fully 3D and fixed the HUD so that the world markers align properly with the three-dimensional city even when you fly low among the buildings. A gamepad is recommended for this mode, because the mouse wheel will not allow for smooth and gradual altitude changes. Should you not like the 3D map, it can be made flat again by deselecting the "Use 3D for world map and character creation (experimental)" checkbox.
- Options, options, options! It's now also possible to turn off the automatic heading control from the "CP2077" overlay tab. If you do that, V will behave like the characters in my previous mods, i.e., keep walking straight as you turn your head left and right. Of course that only applies to strolling: during combat, as in my other mods, V will always face and shoot in the direction you're looking.
Playable Arcade Machines is the only mod I've found so far that requires automatic heading turned off in order to work correctly, because it manipulates the camera in a non-standard way. - I saved this for last... In part for effect, but mostly because I suspect (and hope) that right after reading this you'll just have to try it out and will forget about the rest of the post :-) As you can see in the video, I'm giving you total time control over the game!
I have been playing with this a lot, in order to fine-tune the parameters and the interface, and I must say that it's a whole new way of experiencing the game. It's F.E.A.R. all over again, but with 2021 graphics and in VR!!!
Also, it proves beyond any doubt what people have been complaining of all over the web: enemies in CP2077 are indeed bullet sponges. They can take several grenades exploding a feet from them and multiple headshots, and still come after you. O_O
Since this new mode changes gameplay radically, it's not enabled by default. Tick the "Enable SlowMo (experimental)" to make it accessible.
Then, at any moment during normal gameplay or combat, long-press the right thumbstick on your gamepad for one second to enter slow-motion mode. A red time rate indicator will briefly appear over the HUD. It will default at 10% speed, which is the rate shown in the video above, but it can be freely adjusted from 0% (time fully frozen) to 500% (time sped up 5x).
The way you adjust the rate is by pushing the thumbstick up or down. When the time rate indicator is active, the right thumbstick will have full sensitivity and allow for gradual adjustments, while all other gamepad controls will be disabled; when the time indicator disappears, gamepad inputs will be again passed on to the game, and only moving the right thumbstick all the way up or down will bring back the rate indicator. This is all meant to keep unwanted mix-ups between controlling the time dilation factor and operating the game itself to a minimum.
When you want to snap back to normal time, long-press the right thumbstick again, until the rate indicator turns green.
There is no KB/M support for this at the moment, it's gamepad-only. As for sound, it will still be synchronized with the action, as can be witnessed from the video, but will not slow down or drag. - Please note that using my time control doesn't actually give you an unfair advantage, because your movements slow down at the same rate as the enemies'. Reloading animations in particular seem to take forever, to the point where I usually choose to return to normal time when I need to reload. In fact, all that time control does is give you the equivalent of hyper-fast reflexes, which enemies seem to have anyway ;-) And lots of fun breaking stuff and pumping bullets into bad guys! If you like eye candy, you will just love the incredible amount of detail that the artists of Cyberpunk 2077 put into those animations, which are only seen in battle and normally last so little that they are barely registered.
Also, if you set the rate at 0% everything will be frozen in place, V included, so if you find yourself stuck you know what to check!
