Today our Patreon turns 1! I just can't believe it.

It was May 15, 2021 when I put out the first post into the void of the Internet, unsure if anybody would be interested, and since then the ride has been so wild and breathtaking that it feels both like an age and just moments ago O_O

Some numbers for the growth of our virtual baby:

7 open-world modded games, not including GTA V and NOLF2 which are freely available on GitHub;

67 posts;

3,281 private messages, or about 9 per day;

7,049 post comments, or about 19 per day;

2,685 active Patrons as of today;

number 40 in the top 50 chart for the Patreon "Games" category.

I'm so grateful, and humbled, and happy about what we're building together! Amidst the continuing indifference of AAA studios and publishers, let's keep the VR flame alight []-D

It's been an amazing ride so far.. I still need to get my hands on NOLF so I can play it in VR.. I absolutely love that game. Also the first times I played gta5 and RDR2 in VR were... Mind blowing

Rob Cram

Ahem where is the revenue earned statistic? HEHE.

Grocs

Wow - happy first birthday Luke. Some amazing work done in that time!

2026-09-05 06:00 On a more serious note though, there are some people who think these mods should not be placed behind a paywall unlike Praydog's REframework mods which are offered free to all and sundry. I am in two minds on this because I believe the developer should see some financial reward for the effort, even though they are profiteering from an IP they do not own. I'd rather the dev make these conversions than not, so I am very happy to pay-up. However, not everyone shares this sentiment. I guess there are ways around this such as time-based releases being charged for and offered free at a later date. Or, an open tipping system where those who appreciate the effort can tip the developer. That said, I suspect most people will just take for free and not pay given the chance. It's a tough one. I wonder what people think about this overall? Are the naysayers wrong? Or are people like Praydog able to do what they do without financial reward (perhaps not being full-time)? LukeRoss doesn't have to respond to this either as he already stated working full-time on this project which is fair enough needing an income from it.

I would just like to clarify one point, since a few people seem to miss it. I'm not "profiteering from IP I don't own". There are two types of mods. One type takes the assets, or game design, or ideas, or any other sort of intellectual property belonging to a game, and transfers it to another medium. For instance, the mod that allows you to play Bioshock in VR on the Half-Life: Alyx platform. Those mods need to be authorized by the owners of the original IP, because they allow you to benefit from it without proper compensation to the original IP owners. The other type is what I do, or VorpX does, or GeForce Experience or other software like PiTool: improving the experience offered by a game, without transferring the IP to another medium or platform, and without offering any way of benefiting from the IP that doesn’t require paying the original owners. In simpler words: if you want to play my Elden Ring VR mod, you have to buy the original game first. The original developers and publishers are properly compensated. There is nothing illegal in that. Although there are two caveats: the owners of the original IP might feel that my mods (or again, VorpX, PiTool, GeForce Experience… anything that modifies the way the game looks) disparage the original IP, putting it in a bad light, and/or they might find that my conversions are in competition with a product that they want to release based on their IP. For example, if Rockstar came out with their own VR version of Red Dead Redemption 2. In that case, they would just need to ask and I would of course take down the mods or modify them in a way that stops the alleged damage to their IP.

realvr

Also, I have nothing against making my mods freely available once they're out of early access. For instance, I've been thinking for quite a while of doing that with my Mafia: DE trilogy conversions, since it's very unlikely that those games will receive additional official updates which would require me to revisit the mods. The only reason why I haven't done that yet is that my Patrons might feel upset about pledging their hard-earned money to support me, only to see the fruits of their donations distributed to people who just want a free ride. If there's enough interest though, we might do a poll to assess what Patrons think about the matter.

John Zigmont

The amount of enjoyment I receive is well worth the donation. Luke well done.

Renaissance

You've completely changed my perspective on VR gaming in a positive way. Happy to pay the small fee to keep it going. Any hints on upcoming projects?

WIG

Well Done Luke. We are just as happy to be here as you matey. I consider this the most worthy cause when getting amazing games playable in VR. It's a pleasure to meet so many helpful people too. This is an amazing community. I actually enjoy sitting too with a controller when playing too. CP2077 was such an impactful experience that I actually upgraded my GPU. Thank you for everything ❤️

Fearganainm

A hearty congrats Luke. Here's to many more.

Robbie Turner

I know I’m new to the community, but as I told you in private message. Your mods have alooot of potential Luke and it brings a whole new experience to games that I would have never thought could be played in VR and I highly salute you for that one man! It’s like a whole new world opened up, keep up the awsome great work! FYI I’ve never even been someone’s Patreon supporter for more than a week, but you defiantly have my support until these mods are released for free and maybe even after that. 💯

Nicky Butler

When i first played gta 5 pancake i always wondered what it would be like in vr then your mod came along. Didnt think it possible but the first time playing gta 5 in vr was one of the best gaming experiences iv ever had. I like that you are just as passionate about vr as the patreons, your just one of us but are able to do some matrix trickery to get these running in vr. Happy to support luke

jmarquez151

Thanks for the mods Luke, well deserved!

RadMan

You make many of my VR dreams come true, glad to support and will keep doing so. Keep up the amazing work Luke!

Cercata

Already 1 year wow !!! Let's go for the second one !!!!

Gaz252

Cant believe its been a year since i first heard the name LukeRoss Happy Birthday Luke and congratulations on such a successful year, not only for what you have done for this community but what you have achieved for VR as a whole. I remember a friend telling me on discord that there is a VR mod for RDR2 that just released, i remember that excitement that i felt like a kid at christmas, being a huge VR enthusiast you cant beat this feeling, i also remember being told that i would have to pay to get the mod to which my response was 'so what' if i can explore the beauty of RDR2 in VR then show me where to sign. This was also the time i learned of GTA5 mod and i instantly thought driving around San Andreas in VR while having my custom playlists blasting hell yeaaahhhhhh. Then more and more mods followed for some of my most beloved games and i started playing VR much more than flatscreen games. You can tell people till you are blue in the face how amazing VR is but no matter what you show them be it videos or articles it will never come close to the experience itself. I am thankful i discovered this communinty when i did and i wouldnt want to change it for the world. Luke once again i thank you as do we all from the bottom of our hearts for what you are doing here for us and heres to another great year, Cheers!!! On a side note i cant wait for Assassins Creed (Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla) hehehehe jk...no but really i cant wait []-D

Clint

Wow that year flew by! This is one of my favorite places on the internet and im happy to be a supporter. Congrats on all your success Luke!

zer0

!!!REALVR!!! Congratulations! So many great achievements :-) Cyberpunk is incredible, really enjoying the Elden Ring. All the bonus options are super cool too. Looking forward to GTAVVREAL being ported to the new framework and even maybe playing some of the new far cries. The work you are doing is truly epic! We love you! HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Tomo

Thanks Luke! You bring top level joy to all of us ! True VR Wizard! excited for new projects to come! (not that I finished the old ones yet haha!)

JESSE EDMOND CAHALL

Congrats on the success. I can hardly play pancake gaming anymore since your mods of some of my favorite games. Let's keep this ride going.

Bob Douglass

I tend to see things on the simple side. Patreon is designed for people with a bit of disposable cash to support someone who has the drive to do something that we're interested in. It's not about getting the best deal for your dollar. If you're interested in playing AAA games in VR and someone's working on that, and you can afford to do so, patreonize them

WD_VR

Thank you for what you do luke .... the GODFATHER of vr mods ....luke ross the man

Francisco Torres

when one does things well the rest comes by itself, be proud of your wonderful work!!!

Billy Bloggs

Well done. Thanks for all your work. Hoping your second year is so successful you reignite the PCVR industry and put yourself out of business! :)

realvr

THANK YOU everybody, for your warm words of encouragement and your incredible support!!! So many people in this thread have been here from the beginning... So many of you have become familiar names in my life <3 I look forward to giving you more worlds to explore!!

gurufabbes

Congratulations, Luke. And keep up the great work.

Simplex

Great work on the mods! Congrats on the anniversary. As for monetization - I'm not even sure if patron supports it, but perhaps it's possible to offer mods "a la carte" - for example if you're only interested in one particular mod, you pay a fraction of the regular price and get access only to that mod. If you actually play all the vr mods, 10$ is a steal. But if you only play one game - not so much. But it'd rather prefer all those mods be behind a paywall then not exist at all. And I disagree with the comment about "profiteering" - some VR gamers probably bought those games precisely because of your VR mods, so the devs/publishers of those games "profiteeered" from your work, not the other way round :)

Henry Brooks

Lukes vr mod is the ONLY reason I bought the games. If a game doesnt have VR it doesn’t exist for me.

Cercata

I'll be glad if you release the MODs for free. Isn't patreonage about that ? Duchy of Milan financed Da Vinci, so he makes art, and everyone can enjoy that art, not just he. In fact it was more complex, he wanted Da Vinci to desing war machines, but he only did that partially, he made mainly art ;)

Cercata

The other day in the Flatscreen2VR discord there was an asshole saying he was a leecher because of profiting from the game devs ... So if you buy a car, and the car is missing some features, and you hire someone to add those features, the guy fixing your car is a leecher ? He should do it for free obligated ? That kind of arguments is totally ridiculous, it has been happening before the digital era, people claiming that is just people that wants everythng for free, and if they don't get it, they start moaning and insulting creators.

Jeff Welch

Thanks for elevating the art of VR!

Simplex

@Cercata - In the comments under uploadVR article one guy was mad because Luke's mod is not free. He claimed all mods MUST be free, like it was some kind of law :D

Cercata

Yes, another moaner, I'm 100% sure if they did something usefull, they'll want to get money for it, but they will never do something usefull ... And yes, as Rob said, those moaners sabotaged Valve's try to allow modders to earn money.

Henry Brooks

Whatever Luke picks will most surely be great. Personally, Elden Ring took me completely by surprize (not at all my kind of game) its simply wonderful. One can only hope that one of the earlier Souls games gets the royal Ross treatment… Psychonauts 2 maybe? That being said, Elden Ring is going to take a while so no hurry! A friend of mine just told me he’s put over 500 hours into it.

David Schell

Thanks for all the tweaks to the R.E.A.L. VR mod. I could notice the improvements with every update in RDR2. Too bad all the hours of trying...but hey...all the new ones here haven't experienced that :D Can't wait to explore the other games with the R.E.A.L. VR mod.

Momentum

Thanks for all the hard work and support to all us patrons over the last year. Some of the best $$$ I've ever invested gaming, very excited to see what's next.

Edward Lu

Thanks a lot for all your efforts.Hope RDR2 can get update with full motion controller support.

Flowzen

hey luke, congratulations! :)btw, borderland 3 is free at the epic store for the next 6 days, how about that for a mod? or maybe a sim like stellaris or anno?..but my favorite is kingdom come:deliverance.. i want to visit that beautiful forest in vr.. thanks for your work mate..you are keeping pcvr alive, until psvr2 will be a thing(i think most games will be for pc vr,too) edit: and what about mad max? surprisingly satisfying game.. :)

Wizoz1984

Can you make a VR Bioshock?

Caddie

We are all waiting for a new announcement ;o)

Brandon(Post Maester)

What is the game plan for this year? going to focus on more big games to get more eyes and interest for Vr? Don't burn yourself out! Do keep us posted though :)

realvr

Haha, so many good candidates for VR conversions!!! KC:D will probably get the treatment, it's just too good to miss... although it's not on my roadmap for the moment

realvr

It's still too early to make announcements! I can say one thing though: barring unforeseen difficulties, the next game will have amazing performance, despite looking pretty good []-D

Henry Brooks

Hmmm, interesting… can u give us a really difficult clue so we can start playing the guessing game? Or have u already done that in you reply? Or not? Maybe? Amazing performance could mean a slightly older game or a really good console port. Maybe the division 2 or Watchdogs, these are my guesses anyway. Let the madness begin… Doesnt really matter, the choice Luke makes will be phenominal for sure :)

Antonio Mora

But the game I'd like more than any other get the AER treatment is Star Citizen. You think that is even possible or feasible?

D S

I thought star citizen was going to be VR ...

Antonio Mora

I wouldn't count on it, a mod is more likely IMO

Boat Kettle Cheese

Isnt it online only and cheat protected? Id say 0% but nothings impossible so 0.00000001%

LowRider

Has someone manged to use the OpenXR Toolkit in conjunction with the R.E.A.L Mod? This would be interesting, since it offers fixed (and dynamic) foveated rendering (better performance).

Antonio Mora

I think your'e right same goes to ED Odyssey, too bad.

Cazanu

LowRider i tried, foveated rendering doesnt work with any moded game, fsr or nis on the other hand works tho in gta v at least is where i use it

Cercata

So, what's the next surprise ? Just asking for curiosity, I have yet to start Elden Ring ;)

Cercata

There will be a far cry in performance with the next game ? Or it will be witched performance ? Or will it Bi Shocking performance ?

Cercata

For SQ42 ... once it releases in 2043

YeastyDynasty

Hey Luke, is there a chance that you would be able to make a VR mod for NASCAR Heat 5?

Carl Adoni

Hi luke, I would really like a survival horror type outlast or visage. Thank you

Cercata

Outlast was awesome, maybe the only horror game I played before VR ... I think it would work extremly well with a VR mod.

Derrick taylor

Hey Luke I have stopped playing Elden Ring because it crashes too much in VR. I had contacted you on using your file to record the crashes but I haven't heard back. I really don't want the file to mess up my computer as you have warned. But, I am interested in using it if it can help with these annoying crashes

realvr

I know that you're curious, but this time I'm gonna leave you in the dark :-)

realvr

Hey Derrick, I just looked through my messages but I couldn't find anything recent from you. What was the question?

Derrick taylor

I'm interested in using the file to find the trouble with the crashes but I am concerned that it will be harmful to the computer right?

realvr

The .reg file attached to https://www.patreon.com/posts/66159572 (description in A1) is not harmful in any way. It will only add a registry key that instructs Windows to generate a maximum of 5 minidumps in case Elden Ring crashes. That said, if you don't feel confident making any changes to the Windows registry by yourself, you might want to ask a friend who's knowledgeable with computers to assist you

Cercata

We are hitting F5 non stop at PCgamer :P

Cercata

The Long Dark ... didn't know Luke was onto survivals ... Dark ... I watch the poll, I watch games that launched after the poll, and nothing comes to my mind

Cercata

Squadron 42, the single player part of Star Citizen

Brandon(Post Maester)

I could only think of a few games with dark in the title and that seemed the most likely out of them. Don't think he will do Dark souls games but who knows :) The Luke does what he wants and I enjoy most of it.

Cercata

Maybe he liked elden ring so much that now he wants all the "Souls" games in VR ? XD

Derrick taylor

I am running the file that you have developed. I know that I can't use any overlays or other mods with it. Put I can't enjoy the game without the Wemod overlay. Can I use the file we the WeMod overlay ? Otherwise I cannot play the game

realvr

I have no idea. I didn't know about the WeMod overlay before now, and nobody here on the Patreon has ever mentioned it. However, my mod already comes with Alexander's Blade trainer included, which ought to be enough in case WeMod should not work

zer0

Could he be like, leaving us in the "dark zone?" So much speculation. That would be pretty cool though.

Cazanu

kingdom come for sure would be sweet in the future,it looks stunning and runs decent now the forests look insane.

Derrick taylor

Now what do I do when the game crashes? Do I send the file to you as an attachment? Or does it automatic send the information to you on why it crashes.

realvr

It's not automatic. Once you have added the key into the Windows registry, the next time Elden Ring crashes it should generate a minidump into the folder "%AppData%\EldenRing\CrashDumps". You can upload the minidump anywhere and give me the link

skych

Hi Luke. Been loving the Elden Ring mod and thought i'd try my hand at the RDR2. I just play on MONO because I prefer the fluidity over 3d depth. One problem with the RDR2 mod though is I can't seem to open up the menu with controller like I can in Elden Ring. I know the input is different (Both triggers vs start+select) but it doesn't seem to do anything and I have to use the keyboard. Any thoughts on how to get it working? Also the resolution scaling override in the menu (5/2 for example)-- is that reflected in the game menu as well or is it independent of it?

realvr

The double trigger gesture only works when you're in the game menus, to avoid interfering with gameplay. The Resolution Scale override controls the same setting as the one in the game menu, it's only needed because the game is buggy since DLSS was introduced and it always forgets the RS setting

skych

Ah I see. Thanks for answering-- I'm guessing that resolution override doesn't apply if I'm using DLSS then? Also what does enable OBS mode do? I happen to use OBS to record my VR gameplay and I usually use the SteamVR window and record that in it's widescreen format.

skych

Great that is really helpful. double trigger unfortunately still doesn't work even in menus for me. Using a PS5 controller if that makes a difference but all the inputs are the same. Oh well not a big deal. Last question: the VR menu will sometimes get attached to my headset and move around with my head. I can't get it back to its default floating setting. I can make it float for 5 seconds thanks to that keyboard shortcut but I can't find the setting to put it back to default. Also can't find the setting to have default aiming instead of head. (I'm just playing 3rd person in mono)

Nabi Hussaini

This is what I do and the crashes stop for me. Everytime I would warp to a location the game just force closed and crashed. I'm playing on a quest 2 with 2160x2160 as my setting. So here is what I do and it no longer crashes. As soon as the game starts up in the vr mod I immediately go to settings and switch the resolution to 1920 and save the setting and then change the setting back to 2160. When I do this the game no longer crashes. I have no idea why changing the resolution at the beginning fixes my crashes but it does. If you don't believe me I literally can show you a video with me booting the game up and if I don't switch the resolution at the beginning as soon as I warp somewhere it crashes but when I change the resolution at the beginning I can play hours and not see a crash. I hope this helps somebody.

realvr

The HUD becomes headlocked when you're in combat, to allow you to access all important information at a glance even if the battle makes you turn your head around. All my mods use gaze-based aiming. There is no settings change to enable mouse- or stick-based aiming, because the games I mod expect the crosshair to always be in the center of your view and it's the camera that moves: however, in VR it would make no sense to tilt your view up and down using the mouse or thumbstick. The vertical movement must be driven by your head, otherwise you would get sick and the experience would not be realistic. Just give it a few minutes. You'll see that gaze-based aiming very quickly becomes second-nature, and when it does everybody finds it much more precise and intuitive than moving a tiny lever!

realvr

Thank you for your report, Nabi! I also have no idea why that would be beneficial, but if it works for you it will probably work for other users too. If somebody else can confirm I will put it in the troubleshooting post as a suggestion

LowRider

Ok thanks for your reply, good to know.

Derrick taylor

where do I send the app data crash dump files? Do you have an email address to send them? I don't know how to make a link of the files. Because it still crashes with the change in resolution hack that Nabi suggested.

Derrick taylor

Hey Nabi, does it changes back into 2160 automatically after saving it to 1920??

Dorian Wotton

Hello Luke, would you be interested in making a mod for Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown. There's quite a huge community of fans that has been waiting forever for Namco to include VR in its game but they only did so for Playstation on a couple of missions. Your would make the dream of many people come true if you find the time. Thanks for all you've done on RDR2 and Cyberpunk!

realvr

Wow, that game looks awesome! Although I'm not much into flight sim/combat games myself... I'll tell you It's pretty unlikely that I'll be doing it, so let's hope that some other modder comes to the rescue!

realvr

Just upload them anywhere like on Mega or Drive and put the link here or if you prefer send me a DM with the link

Dorian Wotton

Thanks for having a look at it anyway. Yep there's hoping someday... Oddly enough some small developer studio made of fans of the Ace Combat franchise released a game that is fully VR compatible (Project Wingman) so it goes to show that it's feasible even by a small studio. It's really a shame the industry still considers VR as a niche market. Anyway thanks for the good work and your nice reply!

Derrick taylor

I haven't done that before. Can I just send an attachment? I don't have Mega or Drive

Toshie27

Hello, I was in the hospital for a long time and it no longer works GTA 5 No red dead no mafia. Can someone tell me which version still works?

realvr

Hey Toshie27, I'm very sorry to hear that! What happened to you? The current version of the mod is 4.2.0 and everything should be working again

Toshie27

Thank you Luke, I was in a motorcycle accident but on the mend

realvr

Hi Derrick. The crashes appear to be caused by the WeMod trainer. Could you try removing it (just disabling it for the game might not be enough) and report back whether that solves the issue for you?

realvr

That's awful, and scary! It must have been really bad, for you to have to spend a long time in the hospital... I wish you a full recovery, my virtual friend

Derrick taylor

How do I use your trainer on your mod? what is it called in your ?mod menu? sometimes it crashes without the mod as well. I thought that it was recorded in the files.

realvr

The new link doesn't seem to work...

Nabi Hussaini

No it doesn't automatically change it back to 2160 I have to change it back. I just tried again with the new 4.2.0 and it still does it. If I don't change the resolution to something else when the game and vr mod loads as soon as I warp somewhere it force closes the game. But as soon as the game loads to my most recent save after hitting continue on the main screen I go to settings and change it to 1920 and then save and then change it back to 2160 and save then continue playing without any crash after warping. Also sometimes the game loads with real bad flickering and I just repeat the same process and the flickering is gone.

Derrick taylor

so you have to do this every time you get into the game. settings 1920 save, 2160 save, then play the game.

Nabi Hussaini

Yes. But I don't mind doing it as long as it fixes the crashes. At least it fixes the crashes because I was literally about to give up on the mod until I stumbled on doing this to fix it.

Derrick taylor

Thank you very much for your information on how to do this. I was able to finish the game without any crashes. Again, thank you.

Derrick taylor

Hey luke, ever thought of modding the Star Citizen game?

drowhunter

Not with that Easy Anti-Cheat the game is using. =(

drowhunter

I would bet gold, that with Spider-Man being announced for PC. We will be getting a REAL mod of it.

Cercata

The R.E.A.L. Spider-Man !!!!
