Fix for today's Elden Ring 1.05 patch (Patreon)

Kudos to all Patrons who alerted me about today's official patch to the game breaking the VR conversion.

The 4.2.1 release attached below should solve all issues introduced by the update: inability to switch resolutions, black bars on the bottom and top of the view, HUD and world map wrongly becoming headlocked and/or no longer fully visible.

For new Patrons: The latest release of the mod (currently 4.2.1, attached below) always supports all Patreon games:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Mafia Trilogy (no longer supported due to a DMCA takedown request by Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.)
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Elden Ring

so you should never need to hunt around the website for a specific version to download and use with your favorite title. Installation is very simple:

  • make sure that the game was run normally (not in VR) at least once, so that it could create your user profile;
  • unzip the archive into the game's .exe folder, being careful to preserve the folder structure (i.e., don't move anything around manually, don't flatten the folders, and don't put the mod into its own subfolder: RealConfig.bat must end up at the same level as the game main executable);
  • then run RealConfig, which will automatically select graphics settings known to work correctly in VR and finish installing/configuring the mod for you.

If you're here because of RDR2 and want to start with that (wonderful) game, I have a specific README for it that you can also find attached below.

The original posts for the various games come with LOTS more information on how to get the most from your VR experience, and on how to troubleshoot your installation in case anything goes wrong. Each post is tagged with the games and categories it discusses, so it should be easy enough to find information. However, I know that it all can be a bit overwhelming when you first land here, so if you're feeling lost do not hesitate to ask, either in the public comments or by sending me a DM!!

Thank you for such a quick reaction, that was brilliant! Long term speaking it's always going to be a hassle with these big titles, alas. If Steam had versioning available to the public it would be a lot easier. GOG games I imagine we can store a certain version on HDD and stick with it, thus having a working version available anytime

Yes and no... If you're only playing in VR and not online, you can always use the depot system on Steam to download and install old versions, unless the DRM or the launchers force you to upgrade against your will (R* is the worst offender in this regard)

Hey Luke. Your updated patch didn't work for me 3d is working but it looks like I'm looking at a large screen and when I look around the menu and hud moves with the screen.

Out of curiosity, the patch seems to be mainly gameplay bug fixes. One of the last notes says something about ”performance”fixes. What changed that required an update to the vr mod?

I'm unsure what they meant with the performance improvements, I haven't really noticed any difference in that regard. It's probably just boilerplate. They made a few changes to the code that deals with screen resolution (possibly to support ultrawide?) and that broke one of my patches

Unity games are easier to MOD, many VR modders could do it. What Luke does, only a few can.

how can you make this project full res on a computer? it starts up like in vr as not full screen

You might have inadvertently activated Tourist Mode (you can turn it off from the quick menu)

Mmm, not sure what you mean? If you're referring to the window on the desktop, that's correct, the game should not be running in full screen on your display monitor

I can't get this to work, I have everything installed in a completely clean install of Elden Ring, using Pimax and SteamVR. When I start the game and select offline VR, the game launches in a small window and I see the mod UI. SteamVR does not detect the game so I am just stuck in SteamVR Home. EDIT: All I had to to was select a VR runtime in the mod UI. "Auto" does not work for me. The problem is that performance is abysmal with the Pimax 8KX on 3080 & i9 10850K. Barely getting 1fps. When the game window is out of focus, fps is normal but everything "jitters around" instead.

Have u turned off steam theater mode for the game? How about your resolution setting? I’m on a 3090 and find that 27xx works well, especially together with a reshade sharperning preset.

Hello guys, Oculus quest 2 RTX 2060 mobile 6gb Rdr2 is not starting in VR mode, i am new and I don't know if I do everything correctly, when the game starts in the vr headset i see only my desktop with the game window , i cannot use the vr in any way, I have the oculus desktop app installed and the REAL mod only, i play via oculus link (cable if it matters), any help or guidance? Thanks

Hello, I am new as well, and also play RDR2 (it looks gorgeous in VR!) but maybe I can help. Does the VR menu appear on screen at all? (press 'pause' key on keyboard) Did you run the batch file 'RealConfig.bat' and select the lowest settings? Are all your files in the correct folder 'Red Dead Redemption 2', the folder that has file 'RDR2.exe'?

Heyya. okay im new and i dont have any plan about this. But i installed it and in VR Mode i cant write with my Keyboard do you know about this Problem? Okay i test it to start the game normal without VR and now i cant Start the game the first message say "0x0000142 and the second one "untrusted system file (D:\Steam\steamapps\common\ELDENRING\Game\dinput8.dll

Please use the "Reply to comment" button to avoid creating a new thread for each message. Choosing the character name is the only moment in the whole game where you need to use your keyboard, everything else can be done from the gamepad. If the keyboard doesn't seem to work, make sure that the game window is in focus

Is this the latest version of the mod? In the menu it asks me to update to 5.0.2 but this is the latest version I could find.

I'm also still Having the black bars and Hud problems In first person with Elden Ring on the latest 5.02 Version i :( I'm going to try and run version 4.2.1 Just to see if that works instead. Also thanks again for all the work you do Luke !

4.2.1 Also did not work :( tried multiple resolutions and played with every Hud slider and Camera setting. still black bars still HUD problems where you cant see it in the corners and left of your view. I'm Running an old Oculus CV1 and a 3080 OCv2 if that helps as well !

ok - I'll just say this in case someone else is confused as I was - though this post on Elden Ring say "scroll to the bottom" - the actual mod is not at the bottom - but rather there is only ONE mod for all the games - not a mod posted on the announcements for individual games...

I'm having some pretty gnarly stuttering in Elden ring, but this is my first time using RealVR. To sum up, very jittery player animations and if I pan the camera there's vertical tearing (that's how it looks, but of course my HMD refreshes top to bottom). If I move or pan the camera VERY slowly it doesn't happen. Edit: I learned about about alternate eye rendering. Still, after installing this performance mod things did not seem to improve very much. (https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/135) t Overall I am not expecting a flawless experience but I think I’m missing a config or setting that could help. Are there any workarounds or recommended settings for the Vive Pro 2 for this? More details on my specs: HTC Vive Pro 2 / SteamVR Nvidia 1660 Super (OC to speeds around the 2060/2070 range) Ryzen9 3900x OCed to ~4.7GHz 32GB DDR with decent clock & timings All the relevant data sitting on an M.2 SSD Win10 Ent

I don't have a Vive Pro 2 personally, but it used to work very well with my mods (they even made a fix in their driver in order to support AER). However, it's been quite a while and it's possible that some regression sneaked in. What frame rates are you getting? Does the problem disappear if you select Mono rendering?
