Incredible news, guys! This week Ian Higton exceptionally moved forward his VR corner from the usual Sunday schedule to mid-week, for an episode entirely devoted to our latest VR conversion for FF7R!

This is so exciting []-D

I'm also very happy because many of you have been asking to see video footage of the game, and due to my tinkering with the mod until the very last minute before release I had been unable to give a preview copy to YouTubers. Here's almost 40 minutes of frantic combat and cutscenes ("Jessie! Wedge... Biggs.. but mainly Jessie!" — "And we're good!" "I love you... I mean, what!?")

Don't forget to like and subscribe, as Ian and all the people from Eurogamer and the Digital Foundry are doing such amazing work!!

Luke! BIG Thanks on this one, I am so late to the party but this one blew me away! Final fantasy in VR is the way to go... so glad i finally waited to play this until now

WIG

Lovely to see some positive exposure Luke matey👍. I will have a full night tonight to invest . I am so ready, FFVII PSX was a huge part of my youth I still have the original discs. I cannot wait. Is it a bit like senuas sacrifice in scale? Like are the characters full size? Or is there a way to play with scale like previous mods? I picked it up on epic store when the last sake was on but haven't played much flat screen (only vampire survivor on the steam deck 😂) Thank you again Luke.

realvr

Right back at you, WIG! Yep, absolutely everything is life-sized. The plates in the sky holding up the city over the slums are an incredible sight in VR. But there is also the usual world scale slider if you want to play with toyfication

WIG

Great to hear!! Is there any benefit to using the active time battle system move selection or did you opt for full control? Can't wait to see it it. Do you think you will be looking at any other ue4 games. Outer world's uses ue4 too as does Chernobylyte

realvr

Not sure what you mean by full control? Using the gamepad shortcuts to perform special attacks?

Cercata

Ian never fails !!!!

There is a sort of auto mode you can chose to play for a more classic experience where you watch the action pan out and choice limit breaks and potions etc a bit like the old games you can take over at any point too if you want but battles pan out automatically in classic mode it might be a cool passive way to play?. It is explained here: https://youtu.be/tm_-pwBQu_0 Also would be pretty cool if the slow Mo feature was back in ( not sure if it is already as won't get a chance until later to check sorry) Having a long press on right stick like cyber punk would be pretty epic to activate. Not sure if this is possible. 😁

realvr

Thanks for the explanation! I always play in Normal mode (I like to do my own button mashing, thank you very much 😂) but I see why Classic mode could be more relaxing. Sure, you can play in both modes, the VR mod does not mess with that.

realvr

As for the slowmo, it's built-in with this game. You can either press A, which slows down the action to bullet time and allows you to navigate the menus and choose potions, attacks and the like, or you can press Start and enter the game pause menu, from which X switches to photo mode with the action completely frozen—and you can even move the camera!

WIG

Oh that sounds cool I will certainly be checking out photo mode too. If we load up the photo gallery in game are they still 3d ? Sorry for spam questions I know you are a very busy man.

realvr

Oddly enough the "photo mode" doesn't actually allow you to take photos in the PC version! You can set everything up with it, even add a filter to the image, but then you must take the screenshot externally (from SteamVR if you use the Index, or from an Oculus Mirror window is you use a Meta device). That however means that the screenshot will be 3D and exactly what you see in the headset!

Big thanks to you Ross! Honestly, this is the first game I can play comfortably without motion sickness. And this happens to be my number 1 favourite game :) Previously, I tried your mod on 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn and RDR2, but overall the performance was just not good enough to play. I was wondering if I could use this version on Horizon Zero Dawn, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I would have liked Metro, it can be bought cheap.

Brandon(Post Maester)

Metro would have been fun for sure! I am not interested in spiderman flat but would definitely play in VR if that happens next. Definitely prefer something like Metro or Far Cry next though. It's a lot of pressure to pick just one game though when so many people are relying on you and throwing out things they want to play. We need more Lukes!!

Clint

+1 for Far Cry 5 or 6. Those games are begging to be played in VR. Maybe Luke can clone himself?

petrus munteanu

+1 for cloning, maybe if we get enough votes...

Charles Watkins

Thanks, Luke for reference and link about Far Cry 3. The Far Cry series was a huge part of my early gaming, I made a lot of maps. Far Cry 3 should be a lot less resource hungry for VR than the later games. It would be so much fun, really hope it gets made.

Tomo

+1 Metro or Far Cry or both lol 5 or 6 or both

Thank you for the FFVII mod! I was wondering if there's an easy wway to use my ps5 gamepad to access the overlay and toggle mono/stereo and overlay and effects with the controller. I know pushing down on both thumbsticks is supposed to open up the overlay but that is not working for me. Elden Ring's quick menu using start+select on controller has always worked for me but I never got the gamepad to open the menu for RDR2 or FFVII. Enjoying it so far and just tweaking trying to get an acceptable 120fps as it looks so much smoother than 90. And I take it there's no way to get vrperfkit working with your mods? https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit

skych

Also weird question but if I can get 120fps-- Should I set my valve index headset to 120hz? Or should I set to 120hz and force always on reprojection so that it's 60fps (while the game still shows 120fps). Also curious what others think? 2160x2160 @120hz? or 2736x2736 @90hz?

realvr

Absolutely don't force reprojection (SteamVR motion smoothing doesn't work with my mods). If you can keep a stable 120 fps in game, yes, it's best to set the Index refresh to 120 Hz for minimum AER ghosting

realvr

For the gamepad, I see no reason from my side why it should be working with the overlay for ER but not for FF7R. Is it only the thumbstick buttons which aren't working? If you open the overlay with the Pause key on the keyboard, can you navigate it with the controller then?

Cedric Piganiol

Skych, how can you get 90 fps or more ? Here is i7 12th + RTX 3080 for only 30-40 average fps. It looks bad ( resolution at 3k in settings ) and not smooth ( very low fps ). For me, right now unplayable ! Why ? Can you teach me something ?

skych

its because 3k resolution is too high. you just have to lower it

RainyFaz

2736x2736 @90hz : for high resolution !!!

RainyFaz

Cedric Piganiol : Maybe try in 72Hz in AER mode (not R.E.A.L.) it run smooth on lower config to me. Try to set in 2736x2736 like this : High Textures, High Resolution, Everything in medium but Low Mirrors + Low Distant Shadows. It runs 72FPS pretty stable. You can add AMD FX Shadders with performance mode in the shadders menu (better to save FPS than up the Resolution in game to me)

RainyFaz

In Game settings : Crow should be low and HDD Auto or activated help a lot to get better FPS ;) I forgot to mention DLSS to AUTO
