So if it makes you feel any better, and it definitely does for me given the horror stories we’ve heard about Black people on Hollywood sets, Leah, from everything we know and have seen, is treated very well on set. She has posted videos with her hairstylists while filming, and of course they are Black women. She gets real creative direction over her hair and has even gone on TikTok to ask fans what hairstyles she should wear for the season. When she was first cast as Annabeth, she received a huge amount of racist hate because Annabeth is described as blonde and white in the books. She was only 12 at the time, which is honestly insane. A bunch of grown adults being that cruel is very weird. But Leah has talked about how much her castmates supported her during that period. Walker, who plays Percy, and Aryan, who plays Grover, constantly talk about how she is the perfect Annabeth. Leah also talked about how much they were there for her at the time she was receiving hate. I also heard that this season in particular that for the siren scene here, it was difficult for Leah to film and she cried after filming and that Walker was there to comfort her. When the hate first started, Rick Riordan, the author of the books who also has creative control over the show and personally cast her, wrote a long statement defending her. He made it very clear that she was his choice and essentially told the haters to back off. Even now, he continues to talk about how Leah is a perfect Annabeth.
