Oversteps is the melodic heart of their work. But the Chiastic Slide (along with the Cichlisuite and Envane EPs) are them at their best, and they are earlier works before all the music is made with generative software, so it’s more loopy and digestible.

Incunabula!

At the beginning, Incunabula..

What a big question. Every æ fan has a different opinion on this but I feel like your entry point to their chronology will be inversely proportional to your ability to identify the album as music. So earlier is better for deconstruction, later is m9ndfukc. I found them mid/late 90s so whilst Tri Repetae was officially the first album I enjoyed, it wasn’t until Chiastic Slide that I really clicked. It was so alien and yet comforting, and they’d started their journey of constantly reinventing what music was with each album. LP5 was the absolute bomb though, such freshness and familiarity perfectly blended. By the time Confield came all expectations were off the table. Fans have to now brace for new releases. I couldn’t listen to Exai or Quaristice for a long time as I think I wasn’t open minded enough. NTS Session 4 was a lot of fun though. Last hint: the final track of each album is a special treat.

I would go for Incunabula, was my gateway into Autechre, probably the best entry point

im just listening to them for the first time, so i am not yet qualified to answer this question.

They start quite normal and get weird fast, so I would go chronologically from incunabula and amber onwards.

Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetae

I get the need to start at the beginning but Amber and Tri repetae may be more interesting to you. My heart says Amber, my head says Tri.

There's so many great ae albums. Their older stuff is quite different from what they've done since. I break it up into oldtechre and newtechre. For oldtechre Incunabula and amber are great starting points. For newtechre I suggest Overstseps or Exai. Or you can be wild and listen to LP5 and Confield, I would love to see your take on the track VI Scose Poise. But in my honest opinion, you'll want to hear alltechre. It's all worth hearing. Oh, and Quaristice has a fair few more melodic tracks on it as well. It's so hard to recommend just one lp. 😩

Cichlisuite and Envane! So many great EPs between the albums.

I feel like if those two EPs were combined into one LP, it would be my easy answer to the question, “What’s your favorite Autechre album?” As it stands, my current answer is, “uh Oversteps, Chiastic Slide, and the back half of Draft 7.30…” Messy answer.

As you can see you're going to get 10 answers if you ask 10 fans so just pick one of the more popular ones and go from there. I'd vote Amber (earlier) or LP5 (more transitional) as an entry point.
