Hi all, I'm going to be ramping up on song request livestreams on the public channel! It's been so great having the consistency of a weekly community Sunday stream, and I'm going to start adding a second day during the week! This means we'll get through the year-specific livestreams in early October. And then - well, there are so many fun options! Like the following - if you have ideas for streams, or want to request something specific like an artist or a subgenre, please leave a comment! I want to hear from my Patrons on this!

Bands (e.g., Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, & NIN seem like obvious choices!)

Artists (e.g. any and all bands, projects, and collaborations someone has been involved with like Steve Wilson, Mike Paton, Björk, Thom Yorke, etc.)

Subgenres (e.g. early 90s industrial, Seattle grunge, ambient, krautrock, liquid dnb, folktronica, minimalism, traditional Estonian flute music played by elves, I dunno, sky's the limit!)

Producers

Record labels

Song covers

NOTE: This is not the place to request albums, soundtracks, or OSTs - I'm only looking for avenues where individual songs can be requested with a wide enough scope. Album listening parties are scheduled monthly for the PIGGY+ tiers!

Comments

Klors

People liked the "songs you think have similar elements to this song from decca", so maybe a "this makes me think of" stream? That could even spiderweb out from the origin song to become some kind of X degrees of Kevin Bacon kinda thing.... "How we got from Sin to Sinatra in three easy steps"

Marlon

Songnames that don’t share any letters with the word “macarel”

JimboKW

I’d like to see/hear a deep dive and analysis into some of the Trent & Atticus OSTs. The Vietnam War, Before the Flood, Patriots Day, Gone Girl and Social Network, just to name a few

Darius McCaskey

I know it's a tall order, but I'd love to see a Rush analysis. Maybe some of the later stuff, since Geddy's voice is a bit more approachable than on Rush or Caress of Steel. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with a dive into all the artists that were on Wax Trax back in the day.

Bobhatescomputers

Themes - only songs about specific people, places, things, etc.

Joseph Devens

I know They Might Be Giants isn't really in the NIN ballpark, but I'd love a livestream on them if you're interested. They do really original, weird, totally unique and inventive stuff with music and I hope everybody would enjoy it! I think you'd find their music interesting from a music theory perspective as well, as they tend to make their own rules as they go. Or, maybe just an early 90s artsy pop/rock themed livestream. Thanks!

Quinzhee Jones

you could have an “atonal-only” livestream. a stream where requests can only be songs where harmony isn’t the main focus.

ixi music

So I'd pick a song, any song, and then ask people to request songs that remind them of it?

Justin Blumberg

please let's avoid sub-genres and sub-sub-genres. that is too tricky, too slippery. but themes are good. maybe, certain years from a certain record label, female artists, music from olden times, music that makes you see the color red, music that inspired X artist

Klors

Yep, we get to hear a song you like (presumably), then you pick from suggestions of songs that share similar elements/styles/instruments/vocals/etc. or that would go well in a playlist with the original song

Aetherius

You mentioned Liquid DNB, and this is a subgenre I've listened to quite a bit of, so that would be a cool one for me. Also, as far as labels, Warp Records would be an awesome one to do. Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada have released music on Warp, but also so many others, from Squarepusher to Flying Lotus to Danny Brown.

Arashmickey

Yes I second Klors' suggestion! Also, no pressure on anyone, but I like that it prompts an explanation: when someone says "it has the same vibe" or "reminds me of this song because that guitar bit sounds kinda the same" it's a little bonus for me.

Leanne

I’d love something like, “atypical time signatures/meters” which is something I really enjoy but struggle to create. Genres (well covered by others). Also, a remix-only session would be amazing. So all choices must be an official remix of an original release.

ixi music

Would "trance" or "alt metal" be too confined? Because I think that would be ok. Sub-sub genres, maybe I could see that.

Christian Müller

You shared me a "Dorian" playlist once, I could see stuff like this. Unconventional key signatures Amazing key changes Wild chord progressions Vocal awesomeness stuff like that as titles could be fun, as it provides a very open space where different tastes can come together.

Justin Blumberg

my concern is that it's potentially confusing. people toss around genres, but there isn't always consensus, mostly cos these labels are "made-up." Music from one artist might be described one way and someone else classifies it as somethig other, then it gets increasingly finicky. It's easy to stick to a theme like 90s electronic music from Canada or USA, or avant-garde/experimental music but not everyone thinks Linkin Park is Nu-Metal or would describe Deftones as alt-metal and no one knows what proto koala death core reggae is. I hope i've clarified my statement.

Arashmickey

Vague idea: You could look at the music challenges for inspiration, and vice versa - write challenges inspired by listening parties. Off the top of my head, I can't think of songs without hihats and snares. But I can think of broader examples: songs that conspicuously lack something. Conspicuous because we're used to hearing it, or because the song sets you up to expect one thing and then surprises you with something else. Examples: Atonal music, as someone mentioned below. Fake outs, unconventional beat drops, surprise rhythmic displacement, surprise a cappella, switching genres or musical era or instruments. A different example: Songs that use objects and instruments not-for-purpose, in order to create new sounds. Songs that use samples played in reverse.

fran_xcy

Some ideas just off the top of my head, artists deep dive: Moby, Kraftwerk, Goldfrapp, OMD, Röyksopp, M83... Genres: it'd be funny to listen to some power metal but I see it difficult, so I'm going to say shoegaze.

Hexana

Big Trios. What's some massive sounding piece that only have three instruments. Doesn't have be trios but huge sounds from only a few band members

Peter Waiden

How about - best sycopated riffs or beats - best drums in a certain genre - best solo - best bassline - best rhythm displacement in a song - best polyrhythm etc.

Ryan TV

Love the ideas you mentioned ixi! Genre development could be a wellspring. I spent years curating metadata in my itunes where I could sort by things like month/year of release, regional record labels, notable connections like producers, or to other bands, even to who was President (it went way back to include classical composers 🙃). Sadly my machine crashed and so one of my favorite tools to pitch from for your channel went with it. In a pinch a Boards of Canada w/ their influences or artists influenced by would always hit a sweet spot: it was your review of MHTRTC that indeed pulled me into your channel 🎹🎛️🎶 -ryantv

ixi music

you were made for these livestreams ;)

ixi music

Or...these livestreams were made for you. Probably more like that. Then again, we'd have to ask your parents to be sure.

- Synthesizers: Examine songs that showcase a specific synthesizer (e.g., Sequential Prophet-5, Yamaha DX7) or type (e.g., Subtractive, FM). - Early/Late Works: Compare and contrast one early song to one late song from the career of a composer. - Remixes: Explore songs in which the remixed version might be considered superior to the original. - Regions: Analyze songs from a specific region or country. - Retro Video Games: Highlight what composers were able to do in resource-constrained environments (e.g., Amiga MODs had a maximum of four simultaneous voice channels). Some NIN and friends creations could fall into this category.

GoZa MiTe

Different countries... Electronic music in different countries by few example tracks. I'm very interested especially about other Asian countries than Japan! (India, Thailand, China...) If you find it difficult to find examples it's always good to ask a "specialist" from your patreons or from other listeners.

inspireme123

i'm kind of a history buff, including pop music history and trivia. i like to hear about songs/artists who made a highly influential contribution to pop music. a game changer. and not just the obvious stuff like The Beatles. for example - "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc was the first Top 10 Billboard Charting single to break ground in it's style/sound, the synths, drum machines, and vocal layering in 1975. the sound inspired Billy Joel. Or Nirvana's "Smells Like Team Spirit", their debut single, managed to redefine rock and make the popular hair metal genre disappear seemingly overnight, initiating the popularity of the Seattle grunge sound. Or Madonna's "Ray of Light" rebooted her career and sound with the help of innovative producer William Orbit, which helped introduce electronica into mainstream pop culture.

inspireme123

another idea is film soundtracks. composers. Hans Zimmer, John Williams, James Horner, Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri, John Barry, Danny Elfman and others are great to listen to.

Russell Watkins

The early versus late comparison is a great idea

Kai Ellis

Love this!!! Hmm some ideas for themes... Songs you can't live without Catchiest songs you've ever heard Most heartbreaking songs Most aggressive songs Best acoustic rendition Best instrumental songs Songs with soaring choruses The first song you remember falling in love with

ixi music

Instrumental songs!! Great ideas, Kai.

Klors

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but "collaborations with a specific artist" could be interesting. You pick the artist or maybe collect a list of suggestions from one of your social media channels and pick from that. For instance you specify Thom Yorke, we pick songs "(feat. Thom Yorke)" or other form of credit on the other artists album. It'd be interesting how much the chosen artist flavours the music of the other.

2026-09-26 14:00 Hidden, bonus or exclusive tracks. Inspired by getting The Fragile on vinyl for Xmas and not knowing about "The New Flesh" till it started playing. I'd say unlisted tracks and those which need to be put together (like "Voltron" from 10,000 Days) qualify as hidden.
2026-10-11 09:00 Rather fill up this thread with my random ideas and callbacks, I'm gonna limit myself to three suggestions and put them here. 1. Hidden, bonus or exclusive tracks. (This is the idea the reply refers to) 2. 3.

These are probably more a curiosity than something to dedicate a stream to. Tracks that share their name with the album or the artist - bonus points if it's both. Inspired by "Serú Girán" by Serú Girán from Serú Girán (played during BEST SONG INTROS). Tracks which share the album title often draw my attention. Tracks which name drop the artist, album or track title. A lot include the track title in the lyrics; some do it in interesting ways.

Wax Duck

Interlude tracks Seems to follow intros and outros. An example would be ... I'm sure I'll think of one Tracks with guest artists Idea came from guest singers but any instrument would work. Open question would be if session musicians count, for example Les Claypool and Angelo Moore on "Cold Piece" from Jerry Cantrell's solo album (it's too long to request anyway).

Quinzhee Jones

Well engineered songs, like Untrue which we just listened to

ixi music

I don't know how many folks have an ear for "well-engineered" (could be wrong) but maybe if we said "songs that are incredible with headphones" it'll hit close to that mark?

Quinzhee Jones

or alternatively it could be a patreon listening party

Meemorp

Drum/percussion-less Tracks AND songs with killer drums!

Meemorp

Also Great Live Tracks/Performances

Quinzhee Jones

Long songs ANARCHY: Submissions are picked at random from superchats or patreon comments under the livestream post, NO time limit. If the entire stream is taken up by one track, so be it (even thought that’s *probably* not what’s gonna happen).

Meemorp

After indulging in my own earlier, I just thought a "guilty pleasures stream" might be a lot of fun lol

Quinzhee Jones

I agree, but we’d need a more concrete definition. “bad songs you really like” ?

Quinzhee Jones

For artists, I have Oneohtrix Point Never, SOPHIE, Actress, J Dilla, Seefeel... Venetian Snares if 2h of breakcore sounds fun to you For labels, I have Ninja Tune, Hyperdub, Planet Mu, SKAM records, Nothing Records, Rephlex Records (Aphex Twin's label!) I have suggested a lot of stuff! I hope it's not too much

ixi music

we're doing this theme today! Thanks!

Meemorp

Lol sweet!

Try to make ixi laugh with music

Quinzhee Jones

Neil Cicierega stream. He has made so much cool stuff, whether as his one-member band Lemon Demon, or under his real name (mashups like AC/VC, Floor Corn, Rollercloser...)

Wax Duck

For me, the Mouth albums work best as full listens (starting with Mouth Sounds) but I haven't felt great about suggesting a whole album stream. I guess it depends how funny ixi finds mashups of All Star and TV samples. We could cherry pick more tracks but the transitions and callbacks are why I love a lot of them. AC/VC worked as a stand alone track, T.I.M.E. did not.

Quinzhee Jones

You are right that the mashup albums work better as albums

Wax Duck

ixi playlist takeover Maybe as a patron stream because I'm not sure how you'd handle superchats.

Wax Duck

Songs we didn't know were covers. I imagine we'd play the originals and see how they compare. Inspired by "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" by The Korgis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns_wvl6JB6E Which I know from Beck's version for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and being the B-side to "Don't Try".

Quinzhee Jones

Patrons get in teams of 2 and request a song they both like, with 2x the time limit.

Quinzhee Jones

Suggested by Muted Swan: For the holidays, a christmas music torture stream would be very funny.

Quinzhee Jones

Not my idea, by the way. Someone else said it but I don’t remember who.

Wax Duck

Depending on when, it might have been that muted swine > 1:53:22 @yellstr more trip hop on wednesday? > 1:54:10 @mutedswan @yellstr 100% christmas music to torture ixi – TRIP HOP https://youtu.be/c6hFsSZM0aE?t=6851 (spoiler alert: yellstr got whammed on Wednesday during AGAIN AGAIN)

We did folky and jazzy songs, I suggest DUBBY.

Wax Duck

I'd add BONDY. We're always wondering what makes something sound Spy Movie.

Wax Duck

When Nature Calls (no fucking bass please! ha) Songs that are, include or sound like they could be Field Recordings. Not sure sampling Apollo transmissions would count but it came up during DRIVING and I was thinking about it yesterday while rewatching the Apollo 11 broadcast. [snuck back in to add a title after all the birds during SLEEPY stream]

Music composed for movies (Not just movie scores, in fact they don't need to actually be used in the movie. For example Spectre by Radiohead would qualify)

Wax Duck

kiwibucks or dollarydoos?

Wax Duck

Fun fact, some of the tracks on Still started as rejected tracks for One Hour Photo.

Wax Duck

Name. That. Tune. Not sure exactly how this would work but the idea would be to induce the "how do I know this?" feeling. I imagine it could be kind of like a reverse transformative-covers where we play the originals or reverse sample-based where we play a tracks with a famous sample. This idea has been percolating since DRIVING when I found "David McCallum - The Edge" on the Baby Driver OST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYRpeXwKGfQ

Wax Duck

Desert Island Discs You're stuck on a desert island. Your music player of choice is stuck on repeat. What song would you want it to be? Groundhog Day Radio You're stuck in a time loop. Every morning you're woken up by the clock radio. What song would you want it _not_ to be? Yes I am trying to distract myself from picking a swan song.

Wax Duck

Challenging Tracks Something the requester finds or has found difficult to listen to. I imagine this being a specific album track we'd skip or delete rather than just genres/artists we don't like. I'm most interested in the tracks we've already come around on but getting a second opinion on tracks which haven't clicked yet seems interesting too. Feels like there is overlap here with tracks which end up being Torture Fails.

Wax Duck

Suggestions from your musical trailblazer I imagine most of us have someone who shaped our musical tastes with their suggestions.
