EDIT: I solicited feedback and have made some adjustments to the challenge that I hope will preserve its funnest qualities while giving you more flexibility in meeting the challenge goal!

FEEDBACK CYCLE

Wednesday February 11th at 12noon CST, we'll hop on a livestream to listen to your progress. First, we'll listen to the track you're recreating, then your version. Livestream attendees and I will give you constructive feedback on how to even better recreate your track or answer any questions you might have.

You'll have the rest of the month to incorporate that feedback for an optional final presentation on Zoom, during which you can share your session or screenshots of it to show your fellow musicians what you did to recreate the track.

FINAL SUBMISSION

Deadline to submit your final version is February 28th at midnight CST and there will be a separate Google form posted to Patreon in mid February for that.

If you have the ability and interest, you can join a Zoom call in early March (date TBD) to share your screen with the group and show us the nuts and bolts of how you achieved your track recreation!

CAN I JUST DO PART OF THE TRACK?

Totally. You can do a 8 bar loop to get the gist of the track, or you can even select one aspect of the track and focus only on that, for example, the drums, the guitar tone, or emulating the vocal. Whatever aspect of the song you're the most interested in recreating, or that you know is an aspect you need to work on most.

For example, here's a video of me recreating the main drum pattern of Sanctified in Garageband for iOS. I wasn't focusing that hard on sound design, more rather what I had available to me to get the overall vibe.

But you can also do the whole enchilada. Whatever you want to tackle!

CAN I USE STEMS?

Yes. You can use a stem splitter to separate the vocals and instrument tracks from each other, and recreate only the tracks that you want to, while layering it with the original tracks. Most DAWs now have a built-in stem splitter but you can also use paid options like LALAL.AI.

CAN I COLLABORATE?

Yes. Preference for you to collaborate with other Patrons, but whatever helps you grow and learn!

ORIGINAL POST

This month's' challenge is to recreate a track, which is different than a cover! It means trying to reproduce a track as faithfully and closely as you can to the original. This is such a good exercise. It forces you to learn new skills and stretch your capacity, but in a super fun way! The track does not need to be long, you can pick something easy, and if you can only recreate a part of the track? That's completely fine. Let me know if you have any questions!!

Deadline is February 8th! Yes you get extra time with this one.

LINK TO SUBMIT

Submit by midnight, whenever it' s midnight for you!

I was thinking of remaking "California Rhinoplasty" by Matmos, but recreating the surgery sounds with sources that aren't surgery. Would that be okay/listenable? For the 11th february listening party we can listen from 9:15 to the end, it's just the sound of washing hands and a peaceful drone :)
