Dylan Maleno

my request is Young Marble Giants - Wurlitzer Jukebox! one of my all time favorite bass riffs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG1SPcGG8M4 Original Artist: Tomáš Dvořák (Floex) Remixer: 65daysofstatic Title: The Prison Length: 4:04 This is a remix of an atmospheric track from the video game Machinarium (2009), released for it's 10th anniversary. The 37Hz in this track made me realise I need a sub for my computer and probably an EQ on my bassier headphones. The Balrog arrives around the minute mark.

Please play “Glide Path” by Younger Brother. This is from their new album, Mutually Assured Distraction. It’s a really interesting use of sequenced synth chords and gates, but throughout there are long bass pedal notes that hold the whole song together and help make some sense of the at times discordant and suspended rhythmic chords. I think it’s really clever. And something a bit different from my usual choices. It’s 5:08 mins. https://youtu.be/DaISSOu_aL0?si=Vh6AwvJIicQllOOb

"Cavalries" by Mutemath - bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas (who also handled guitars, as they were temporarily down a member) https://youtu.be/BkwoJb31Tmo From their rawest album, Odd Soul (2011) which is chock full of tasty bass lines. This song is especially fun because of the rhythm/tempo changes. (I do find the mix is a bit midrangey, so you might want to turn up the lows a bit, if possible.)

Artist - Duke Ellington Title - Portrait Of Wellman Braud https://youtu.be/HsOOi1HnRV8?si=DvowDHCkhNwXwkck Credited by Brantford Marsalis with being the first to use the "walking bass" line instead of the the "two beat" commonly played by the tuba in New Orleans jazz, at the time. This song is tribute to the bassist who is said to have been the driving force behind Duke Ellington's sound when he was with them from 1926-1935. Taken from the Grammy award winning album, "New Orleans Suite".

This is an awesome track, pretty much all of the remix album was too, and the original Machinarium OST by Floex is an outstandingly beautiful assembly of audio.

Mali

Wow I didn’t know that was Floex!!

https://youtu.be/FgCE__9WQ6w?si=4e0vm3Rtt3PNeMHq Artist: Olivia Newton-John Track: Totally Hot If we’re looking for songs with kick-ass bass, my mind obviously goes first to Olivia Newton-John lol. Sarcasm aside, the bassist is David Hungate, notable for his time with Toto during their creative peak as well as a highly sought after session ace.

Massive Attack - Safe From Harm (5:18) https://youtu.be/fZxUMid6za8?si=LDbyvt9myIU0ZGAU Hello ixi! And to the community gathering here! Given the theme for this Listening Party, it felt right to suggest the opening track from Massive Attack’s debut album. It perfectly fits the socio- and geopolitical climate of the early '90s; during the Gulf War, the band was inadvertently censored by the BBC due to their name, temporarily becoming just "Massive" (creating some rare collectibles). From then on, this led them to adopt a proactive, activist, and resistant stance across many areas and issues, something very noticeable in their tours, which continues to this day. So, that's the context and how it resonates today. This link is the original 1991 version of "Blue Lines". I highly recommend watching its claustrophobic music video, which features a slightly different mix. In my opinion, it’s the perfect introduction to the album, rather than diving straight into the darker side of the Massive Attack universe.

https://youtu.be/2Ia3baO8qHQ?si=0GkLuDdGLRInjQaM Artist: Death From Above 1979 Song: Romantic Rights This 2 piece (bassist/drummer) is a band I've loved for 20 years and had the pleasure of seeing live a couple times (one of those times, they were opening for Deftones!). The first time I heard their bass tone, I was hooked and I've never stopped listening to them since.

Barry Stoller - Match of the Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiDgXAORsMM This is the theme tune for the weekly football round up on BBC in UK. Been the theme since the 70s. They tried to modernise it in the 90s and change it. The public were not happy and they went back to the original. I've always hated football but tuned in for the theme, especially the bass. It's so happy.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAVv5G1jkW4 Artist: Ringo Deathstarr Song Title: Guilt Length: 3:17 I'm pretty sure this was the song you were afraid would give everyone whiplash last stream :P Do you think we're ready to hear it now? If anything, I might have exaggerated a little in my superchat message about how complex the bassline is (because deep down, it's all about the sales pitch!) ...The only thing I know for certain is that the song slaps! Lol. Anyway, these guys (and gal) are quietly leading the Austin, TX shoegaze movement right now - the best one in my opinion! Although the main focus is supposed to be on the bass guitar in this track, every band member bassically shines through here. So how's about showing some love for your fellow Texans today? ;)

NicTunes

Geez, I must be desperate to make a sale if I'm resorting to this many puns! Lol.

Aaron SirLemming

I never knew about this mix, it's really cool!

Wax Duck

I've had the Machinarium OST since it was in a Humble Bundle. I only found the remix album last month between the Electronic Instrumental and Ambient parties. This track stuck out to me because I love how it extends one of the more atmospheric originals.

Wax Duck

That's one way to nerf Stella's drumming so we can focus on Jennylee's bass ;) I had considered the KEXP performance where she's playing buckets.

Wax Duck

I wouldn't have believed that they added galloping horse, punching and :airhorn: foley during the '90s intros but I'm back from a playlist and I believe it now Eeeee

Anthony Savoie

Artist: Frank Zappa Title: Friendly Little Finger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxz0Kbuq7_E Zappa plays guitars and bass on this tune. A good example of a technique he called Xenochrony, where he combine tracks from totally different songs. Of this piece he said: "This is one of the earliest examples of a technique I developed called Xenochrony (strange synchronizations). The solo and drone bass was recorded on a 2-track Nagra, 15 ips, with a pair of Neumann U-87 microphones in a rather wet-sounding dressing room, warming up before a concert at Hofstra University on Long Island. This pair of tracks was later Xenochronized to a drum track out-take from 'The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution.' The introductory orchestration was added next, and then the Hofner bass (recorded at half-speed), rhythmically splitting the difference between the two different track tempos."

Faiz Zahari

Artist: ANRI Title: Remember Summer Days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZlnBW-MJh0 Had a tough time figuring out what song to recommend, being someone who plays bass guitar and always notices bass in songs. Japanese City Pop has a ton of cool bass lines and they always have such...soul to them. And they are usually very interesting!
