Damn this album could be dissected for another 13 years… absolute banger! Subjectively I don’t know if MHTRTC can be topped for the nostalgia and playful joyousness, but objectively this may be their greatest album 👏

I could be mistaken (using the old memory on this one) but I think the hand drums from this were also used elsewhere. Edit: it's so hard to tell, there are hand drums on a bunch of songs and they are so processed. This is a cool find though, thanks for sharing!

Because you hear it as a trained musician, your insight opens up new layers for those of us who aren't. It gives me personally a greater appreciation of the music, it is a lovely feeling. Thank you

Astounding! Such a satisfying mantra in the track how they multiplied it to many voices and pitch shifted it. I gained so much further appreciation of Inferno seeing your truncated breakdown yesterday. My journey with BOC began with a remix of Happy Cycling on a Kid Loco release I think the same year MHTRTC was released. I enjoyed editing their tracks into some video work, and still remain so geeky following their development! Hope you get around to whatever EPs you’ve missed. Trans Canada Highway especially is a fave for me 🤗. I’ll always be jealous of an old work friend that saw them live back in 2000 overseas, in what was if not their final performance, quite close to it. Of course the dream is they return to the stage, someday 🙏

Yesssss!! I was wondering what that sample was since attending a listening party on the 28th. Such a beautiful song, maybe their most beautiful backing chorus

Hi ixi, I've got a tiny bit more background info that should fill in the gaps: although I can't point you to the exact sample recording BoC used for this, it is absolutely Door of My Heart, but it is not sampled from the recording you played in this clip. That song is a traditional/canonical chant song from a (I hesitate to say 'cult' in case I offend anyone, and to be fair SRF is a pretty benign cult with a relatively clean track record, and I'm using that word in more of a strict academic sense here rather than a disparaging/dismissive manner) 'new religious movement' that was started in the early 20th Century by a guy named Yogananda. Point being that the song has had COUNTLESS renditions that have been recorded at numerous times and places. The clip you played in this video is just one guy singing it in its original/canon key and rhythm. But it is often performed in the manner of 'kirtan' (the originally Indian tradition of religious call-and-response singing). And this kirtan style is also how this exact song is sung in SRF temples/churches by groups of people to this day. Hearing that vocal sampling when I first heard Inferno gave me instant flashbacks to my childhood being around that organization, and it resolutely strikes my ear as being a recording of a group (from the sounds of it, likely more women than men) doing the call-and-response pattern with the two lines "Just for once come to me (x2)" and "I wait for thee night and day (x2)". So they didn't use any effects to make it sound like more people, it actually is more people, but it is possible and perhaps likely that they pitch shifted it, but even then... due to what typically emerges naturally out of a kirtan session, where people lock into whatever key they happen to lock into (as they reflexively adjust with respect to one another from the start of the call-and-response session), it's even possible that they matched the track to the sample rather than verse vica.

cool, thank you! I've done kirtan once after a yoga class.
