Woohoo!

ixi music

Seems to be up! Hope you are able to sleep soon.

I don’t think there’s a conflict in the lyrics regarding those specific lines. He still proclaims an “absence of faith” but he has become “closer to (being) god.” And I love your take on how he hates himself for enjoying degrading his sexual partner. So yes, still a heavy conflicted song

echothirteen

I just now audibly gasped at your piggy revelation! Holy cow!

echothirteen

👏 great video! This is the one that’s gonna get you those big bucks level views

Stephen Marsh

Kudos! Great analysis and so very well presented. And, the improv at the end? Splendid!

Brian Hard

This was pretty awesome. Great job. So many details I did not pay attention to before.

Steve Marseille

Interesting interpretation - that he's singing about closer to *being* god, not more proximately located. I have to admit I never thought about it that way.

Steve Marseille

Oh Trent is very, very blues based - it's just been (as Rolling Stone once described "Somewhat Damaged") "thrown into a funk blender with Tom Waits". And his vocal performance dances around so many little tricks.

ixi music

Very interesting interpretation Mr. Thirteen of Echos! That dovetails nicely into the omnipotent vibe of Eraser, does it not?

ixi music

Haha ah wish I could have seen THAT on video!

ixi music

Haha maybe, but I'm sure it's far too long for most people. Good thing I'm not making these videos for most people 😈

ixi music

Ah thank you! I so look forward to improvising on the themes and patterns I pick up on during the analysis and it's really lovely when it turns out good.

ixi music

Me too, and there are even more I didn't go over, and more I have yet to notice. Thank you Trent for giving us the gift that keeps on giving, even almost 30 years later!

ixi music

Haha wow, that's...pretty accurate! I just like...really want to talk to him about 3rds. It might be the most boring conversation for him but I just want to know how he really feels about them.

Steve Marseille

P.S. I think you are totally right about the Piggy thing - I'd never noticed that specific... paraphrasing! At the same time, it makes total sense -- so much of TDS is built around the same building blocks. Gives a musical sense of cohesion... and I think is more successful in accomplishing that than The Fragile, which does the same kind of thing but... the album never feels as thematically cohesive (less of a story being told?).

echothirteen

I chuckled at myself when I realized I had done it. But felt appropriate since I’ve heard the song so much and didn’t pick this up! It was my intro to NIN as well. There’s no way that Piggy link was a coincidence, and if Trent says it was then I don’t wanna hear it. He’s wrong lol

Brian

When you mentioned not wanting to get into the chord analysis, deferring to jazz theorists, I just thought, "What a fun collaboration idea to explore in the future: Ixi and Adam Neely."

ixi music

um YES! I'm sure he doesn't know who I am (yet...!) but that would be amazing. I love his videos.

ixi music

Right see, I just don't think Trent would accidentally plagiarize himself to that degree in the same album. Even if it wasn't intentional, he'd notice it and then he'd either decide to change it or keep it. I'm definitely looking forward to diving into The Fragile's themes too. But I agree it doesn't tell a story the way TDS does!

As someone who has loved Trent and NIN since Pretty Hate Machine, thank you for giving new life to these songs I already thought I knew like the back of my hand, via your expertise and passion. I discovered your channel a couple weeks ago, and have been waiting for the beginning of the month to start supporting you here.   I have so many thoughts on Ruiner, and can't wait to hear your take on it. It's not a popular track with most NIN fans I've met, or Trent himself apparently, but I really love it. I think it's the lynchpin of the album, and a fascinating response to Closer. This was reinforced when, as an angsty, shitty teenager in the 90's, I had to hear all the 'wrong' people starting to like Closer, or, as they would call it, 'the fuck me like an animal song'. It took me a while to not hold those feelings against the song itself. When you mentioned the self-loathing aspect to Closer, a lightbulb went off for me and made me appreciate the juxtaposition of Ruiner even more. I've always seen "The Ruiner" as equal parts people around him and a part of the character himself that he has to externalize in order to not take responsibility for everything falling apart. And the way the groove of the song kind of clashes with the tone of the lyrics makes my brain light up for some reason. Maybe you'll be able to explain it in musical terms I'm now learning to understand!

ixi music

This is awesome! I'll take these thoughts and questions with me into my analysis. I'd say that The Becoming is the most requested track I analyze on TDS, Reptile 2nd, and Ruiner 3rd. So maybe you've found your people! And thanks for sharing how the videos have impacted you, and for supporting the channel! It's good to know these videos are making a difference for people.

Kai Ellis

This was brilliant. Thank you so much for this! When you finally get to "Hurt", along with the Johnny Cash version, please talk about the duet he did with Bowie :)
