Love that you are adding Tool to the mix. Tool and NIN are possibly my favorite bands/artists. How are you so awesome??!!

“Over-analyzing separates the body from the mind” 😂 maybe this separation is actually a good thing sometimes

Loved the analysis :-) btw the gong part is easy to see here: https://youtu.be/zqftunIOqe0 This is a vintage Danny Carey video for Drummer World. 3 minutes of Danny being amazing. It’s aggressive, simple enough to lure us, but complex enough to amaze us time and time again.

Ok that was amazing. I didn't see him hit the gong lol I'll watch it again...and again.

This may help, if you want it. I know this could come across as "Toolsplaining"; know I don't mean it as such... For me, the constant (and key to counting pulses in terms of feel) throughout is the eighth note. The "chorus riff" is in 9/8, 8/8, 7/8 repeating. I feel it like one of two ways: 3-3-3 (9/8), 3-3-2 (8/8), 2-2-3 (7/8). OR: 3-3-3 (9/8), 3-3 (6/8), 2-2-2 (3/4), 3 (3/8). The first part of the verse drum pattern is played as follows, although this is an obviously reductive way to notate it: H h f H h f H h h f (3-3-2-2 (H=accented tom hit, h=unaccented tom hit, f=foot(kick drum))) For the last part of the verse drum pattern, it'd sort of reversed: H H H f H H f H H f (2-2-3-3) The bridge is insane, with Danny doing 5/8 (or indeed “10/16” because the drum part is felt like 2 quick groups of “12345” in succession (listen to the hihat pattern)) over the rest of the band’s 6/8. I know the pattern well because it was professionally notated in Modern Drummer magazine around the time the album came out, and I ate that shit up. I love how the outro switches from 6/8 to 3/4 when Danny backs up a dumptruck full of hemiolas and lets it loose. And I’ll say it every time: the final chords are one of the most supremely satisfying musical endings I’ve heard.

"Toolsplaining" and "dumptruck full of hemiolas" = ♥️

I second what Rick said! I truly enjoyed seeing you get into the song. (and reading the lyrics) Tool had a way of starting an album out rough and by the time you get to the end of the album then end on a somewhat spiritual crescendo. So much packed into their songs and their albums. Their next album; 10,000 Days is also awesome! Maynard made us wait 13 years for the next album (Fear Inoculum) and it was a let down in my opinion. I had daily google alerts for many years "new Tool album" and the band worked on and it seemed like Maynard wasn't interested in it much. They couldn't get him in the studio for the lyrics. Most reviews seemed to like that album and if you were younger, you probably would...but those of us that were fans since the early 90's were disappointed as instrumentally it was good but it sounded too much like the previous work...it was if Maynard didn't care so much...it wasn't new. I deleted all of my Tool from my phone and iTunes after that in a personal protest. Now YOU have to go and start playing Tool and I had to put it all back on my iTunes and phone again! It does feel good to listen to it again! Thanks ixi!
