The challenge is simple:

Use this chord (demonstrated in video) in your song or musical idea WITHOUT it becoming the X-Files theme or the Just Like You Imagined intro! ;) You don't have to arpeggiate or "roll through" the chord like that, you can play it all at once!

Submit a file or link to me via email by October 31st at midnight: ixi@iximusic.com

I'll listen to the submissions and post a video of my first time reactions early November viewable to Patrons - the video will NOT go public without your permission.

Have fun MUWAHAHAHAHAHA

If you've never participated before: there are no rules and there is no winner - this is a prompt to inspire you to write something! It can be anything from a short musical idea to a fully produced song. Anyone of any experience level can give it a go! This is a judgment-free zone.

The cut at 0:41 tells me there was much more "spooky" you did but eventually decided to not leave in the video haha Awwwwright, let's do not X-Files. So no X-Files song. So everything BUT X-Files. Here we go. Duu duuu duu duu deeee duuuuu DAMN!

Chris Egert

Wait a minute... that's just a flat sixth disguised as a spooky chord!

John Molyneux

It seemed like a fun challenge until I got to the end of the video, but now I'm far too afraid to take part!

Andrès Fernandez

This looks extremely fun! This will be my first participating in your challenges. Hope to come with something nice! :)

muwhahahaahahahahaaaaaa!!! 👻

Forgot to say: you don't have to arpeggiate or "roll through" the chord like that, you can play it all at once! And if you do roll through it, you can start from the top ;) Just say NO to X-Files!

ixi music

It's got a b6 note in it YES! (but a flat 6 chord starts on the b6 and is a major chord)

Andrès Fernandez

Wait... I'm playing with it right now. Isn't it a Maj7 chord on first inversion? Like : AbMaj7/C = Cm X files chord?

ixi music

Yeah, that's the name for it when the root is Ab, in your example. In my example I'm thinking of the root as C, and apparently that doesn't have a name that I've found. Theoretical vs practical I suppose!

Andrès Fernandez

Uhmm.. the root is not Ab in my exemple since I write it with a /C (root) which is the same as saying AbMaj7 first inversion (C becoming the root). Anyways, same sound, different way to see it. Oh theory is a beautiful thing :)

ixi music

When you invert or rearrange the notes in a chord, the root doesn't change (and neither do the other chord parts (3, 5, 7, etc.)). Root = 1. Abmaj7/C means that the root is Ab and it's voiced with a C as the lowest note. In other words for that chord, the 3rd is the lowest note and the root is the highest. The root is only the same as the lowest note when you're in root position.

Andrès Fernandez

I understand, thanks! But still, that voicing of AbM7 results on the same notes than Cm flat 6. I used this online tool for chord naming and they suggest AbMaj7 #5. So many ways to see it! https://www.scales-chords.com/chord/piano/Abmaj7%235 I started working on an idea and I'm pretty excited on what's coming out from that. This challenge is a great way of exploring and learning. I will develop it the best I can. Can't wait to see how it results! Thank you Ixi! :)
