Y'all have been asking about what I think of VAST - here are a few tracks I listened to from the Visual Audio Sensory Theater record.

Listening to VAST (replay)

First 3 vast records were phenomenal. Definitive college music for me!

Jason Esty

I love Vast! I have been a fan since this album came out. Several years ago, I got to work with them when they played a venue that I worked for as the head audio tech. Needless to say, they were fantastic!

A Traveler on the Sea

Lady of Dreams from Music for People is one of my favorite. It's kinda corny but if my soul had a sound it would be this song.

Kai Ellis

Seriously. It's wild how good those first three records are. Each with their own identity and yet such a recognizable sound.

Kai Ellis

That's incredible. So jealous you got to meet Jon!!

Kai Ellis

Great song and a great album closer.

The first three albums from this band are full of legendary tracks. All of them have a banging opener followed by a ridiculously good second track AND THEN followed by an equally good third and then fourth track! Their sophomore album Music for People is fascinating to me because it is essentially the opposite of how NIN's Broken was made. PHM does well and then the record company pressures Trent to make a more commercial album so he goes into hiding and makes something as different and deliberately less commercial than PHM as possible. Thus, Broken. VAST's self titled debut does well and then the record company pressures Jon to make a more commercial album so he fights it but ultimately gives in and makes something as differently and deliberately MORE commercial as possible. Thus, Music for People. It's a fun thought experiment to wonder what we would have gotten from Trent if he had tried to make something overtly commercial. I suspect it would still be brilliant, even if he would have hated it. That's my feeling on Music for People. I know it was made under duress, and it's nowhere near as thunderous or raw as the self titled or Turquoise/Crimson, but it's still SO DAMN GOOD that I can't help but love it.

Yeeah, that was so pleasant to see the VAST great tracks analyzed by you. I seriously love this project. The first time I listened to "Touched" I was amazed by the choice of some kind of ethnic samples/instruments, something similar to a tibetan horn sounding over the electronic-rock music on 1:10 and in the end of the track. Both "Here" and "Touched" were the whole new experience.

Kai Ellis

Agree about both of these! But you can't listen to Evil Little Girl without listening to That's My Boy 😁 Dirty Hole is one of my favorites. When the guitars kick in full force it's so satisfying!
