That SNL performance of i is my favorite of all time that alone separates anybody else from him.

David Reynolds

Glad you got to hear the single version of "I". You miss out on a lot of the song listening to the album version. The guy driving the car in "i" is Ronald Isley, lead singer of the Isley Brothers band. Two of the band's songs are sampled in the beat, he does additional vocals in the background, and he is more prominently featured at the end of "How much a dollar cost".

Cledson Antunes

Kendrick’s performance of “i” on SNL is seen as a tribute to Method Man from the Wu-Tang Clan. His use of all-black contact lenses and partially unbraided hair directly references Method Man’s iconic look in the "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By" music video and during the era of his classic album Tical, which turned 20 around the time of the performance. Wu-Tang Clan's leader and producer, RZA, even commented on the performance at the time, confirming he also saw it as a major tribute.
